Resident Evil Village is also worth considering, but it is survival horror with first-person shooting—not a conventional action FPS.
Which 2021 single-player FPS should you play?
| Game | Campaign style | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Deathloop | Time-loop structure built around learning locations and planning targets | Players who enjoy experimentation and a less conventional campaign |
| Halo Infinite | Science-fiction campaign in an expansive environment | Players who want a Master Chief adventure with room to explore |
| Far Cry 6 | Open-world action with varied firearms and exploration | Players who want a broad, exploratory campaign |
| Resident Evil Village | First-person survival horror with shooting | Players who want tension and horror as much as gunplay |
This is a set of distinct recommendations, not a definitive ranking of every shooter released in 2021. The first three are the clearest conventional FPS campaign picks; Village belongs on the list only if you are open to survival horror.
Deathloop: a shooter built around a repeating day
Deathloop puts Colt in a repeating day and asks him to eliminate eight targets to break the cycle. You revisit locations at different times, using what you learn to uncover routes and opportunities. Its appeal is as much about planning and experimentation as it is about its gunplay and time-bending abilities, which GameSpot highlighted in its 2021 shooter roundup.
One qualification matters if you want a strictly solo experience: another player can invade as Julianna. That online invasion feature is part of the game, so it is not accurate to describe the experience as necessarily offline-only. See Gameranx’s 2021 single-player roundup and GameSpot’s 2021 shooter list.

Halo Infinite: a science-fiction campaign with room to explore
Halo Infinite is the pick for a player who wants a campaign starring Master Chief in a large environment that encourages exploration. Its multiplayer is a separate part of the game; Xbox’s 2021 showcase covered the multiplayer reveal separately from the campaign recommendation. GameSpot listed the first release as November 15, 2021, for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Those are historical release details, not a statement about current availability or service terms.

Far Cry 6: open-world action on Yara
Choose Far Cry 6 if you want a more straightforward open-world action campaign, with an assortment of firearms and room to explore. It is set on Yara, a fictional island. Gameranx gives its release date as October 7, 2021; GameSpot emphasizes the range of weapons and exploration. It is the strongest match here for someone who wants an expansive world rather than a tightly unusual structure such as Deathloop.

- Offline FPS action with realistic weapons!
Resident Evil Village: an adjacent horror pick
Resident Evil Village is a good option if you want first-person shooting within a survival-horror game. It is not interchangeable with a conventional action FPS: horror and survival are central to the experience. Gameranx includes it among its 2021 single-player games and lists May 7, 2021, as its release date. See Gameranx’s roundup.
What the 2021 review scores do—and do not—tell you
GameSpot’s 2021 roundup displayed Metacritic Metascores of 88 for Deathloop, 86 for Halo Infinite, and 80 for Far Cry 6. These are the figures shown on that historical roundup, not a claim about current ratings or a guarantee that one game will suit every player. They offer context, but campaign structure and tone are more useful ways to choose among these three.
