Intel XTU and AMD Ryzen Master are better fits when you want built-in testing for a supported Intel or AMD system. Pick a test for the component and question you have—stability testing is not the same as benchmarking, and a successful run cannot prove a PC will remain stable under every workload.
Choose a stress test for the question you need answered
A stress test applies a sustained workload to help reveal instability or show how a system behaves under load, including thermally. A benchmark measures performance in a particular workload. A high benchmark score does not by itself establish long-term stability; Intel notes that a simple benchmark may not be enough to validate a long-term overclock.
- Looking for a broad first-pass check: use a suite that covers the components you want to examine, such as OCCT.
- Checking an overclock or cooling behavior: use a suitable stability test and observe the system during the run.
- Comparing performance: use a benchmark designed to produce a performance result, not a stress test alone.
PC stress-testing software compared
| Tool | Best-supported role | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| OCCT | Broad stress testing and monitoring; its publisher describes CPU, GPU, RAM and power-supply testing. | Check OCCT’s current feature and hardware-support information before relying on a particular test or compatibility detail. |
| Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) | Intel-platform utility with selectable CPU, memory and integrated-graphics stress tests. | Check processor and motherboard support. It is not a universal tool for AMD systems. |
| AMD Ryzen Master | AMD utility with system-, CPU- or RAM-level stress tests in Ryzen Master User Guide 3.1.0. | The guide documents test durations of 10–600 seconds and warns that testing may crash or reboot the system. |
| MemTest86 | Community participants mention it as a RAM-testing option. | Current official features and requirements are not established here; consult the publisher’s documentation before choosing it for a specific workflow. |
What to know about each option
OCCT for broad component coverage
OCCT is the most directly aligned option here when you want a single suite for several component categories: its publisher describes CPU, GPU, RAM and PSU stability testing. Confirm the current tests and supported hardware on OCCT’s official site before relying on a particular feature.
Intel XTU for supported Intel systems
Intel XTU offers selectable CPU, memory and integrated-graphics tests. Intel advises checking whether your processor is supported, and support can also depend on the motherboard. See Intel’s XTU common issues and resolutions and its XTU overclocking guide.

- 5V USB-A POWER - Connects to a compatible wall charger, power bank, laptop, desktop computer or other standard 5V USB power source.
- COOLS SMALL ELECTRONICS - Helps improve airflow around routers, TV boxes, modems, receivers, DVRs, projectors and other heat-producing AV equipment.
- ONE-BUTTON CONTROL - The inline on and off switch provides simple operation without repeatedly unplugging the USB cable. Cable length is 39.37 inches.
- STABLE LOW-VIBRATION SETUP - Raised rubber feet help keep the fan stable on desks, shelves, TV stands and AV cabinets while reducing contact vibration.
- 120MM FAN SPECIFICATIONS - Measures 4.72 x 4.72 x 1.85 inches and is rated at 5V, 0.3A and 1500 RPM ±10%, with an oil bearing and protective grille.
Ryzen Master for supported AMD systems
AMD’s Ryzen Master User Guide 3.1.0 documents system-, CPU- and RAM-level stress tests, with durations from 10 to 600 seconds. AMD warns that a test can crash or reboot the computer. Ryzen Master is an AMD utility, not a general-purpose test recommendation for every PC. See AMD’s Ryzen Master User Guide 3.1.0.
MemTest86 for a RAM-focused workflow
MemTest86 is mentioned by community participants as a RAM-testing option, alongside a USB-stick workflow. That discussion does not establish current official requirements or features. If you select a bootable RAM diagnostic, a USB flash drive may be useful for that workflow; it is not needed for every PC stress test.

How long should you run a test?
Intel offers illustrative timings in its XTU guidance: five minutes for a quick stability check, around 30 minutes to assess stability and cooling, and three to five hours or longer to validate a 24/7 overclock. These are Intel’s examples, not universal pass criteria or a guarantee of stability. Choose a duration that matches your goal, stay present to monitor the PC, and avoid treating one successful run as proof against every application or workload.

- Save work and close anything you cannot afford to lose. A high-load test can expose instability; AMD warns Ryzen Master testing may crash or reboot the system.
- Confirm the test fits your hardware. Check the utility’s support information, especially for Intel XTU or Ryzen Master.
- Start with a modest test duration. Increase it only if you have a reason to examine longer-term behavior, and monitor temperatures and system behavior throughout.
- Stop if the PC behaves abnormally. Do not leave an unstable overclock in place or continue through a crash, reboot, or concerning thermal behavior.
- Be cautious with tuning changes. Intel warns that changing clock frequency or voltage may affect warranty, stability, security, performance and component life. AMD warns that tuning can reduce processor longevity and reliability.
Intel’s XTU guide states: “Altering clock frequency or voltage may void any product warranties and reduce stability, security, performance, and life of the processor and other components.” AMD’s Ryzen Master User Guide 3.1.0 likewise describes tuning stock CPU, memory, current, power and voltage settings “at the risk of reduced processor longevity and reliability.”
