It is an exploration sandbox rather than a tightly scripted role-playing game. For a more authored story, choose The Outer Worlds. For classic party-based role-playing and consequential decisions, choose Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the strongest additional recommendation if you own a compatible PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, but it is not listed for Switch or Switch 2 in the cited platform information.
Those distinctions matter because “a game like Starfield” can mean several different things: a huge universe to wander, a ship to improve, a science-fiction story with dialogue choices, or a long campaign built around companions. No single recommendation here does all of that at once. Pick the game whose structure matches the part of Starfield you were most interested in, then verify the exact edition and region before paying.

First, what “can’t play Starfield on Switch 2” actually means
Starfield is not currently listed for Nintendo Switch 2 in Bethesda’s 2026 roadmap and the relevant product-platform listings. That is a statement about the available 2026 announcements, not proof that a future port is impossible. The practical result is that a Switch 2 owner needs to decide which part of the Starfield idea matters most: traveling through a large universe, improving a ship, making role-playing choices, following a directed science-fiction story, or building relationships over a long campaign.
Nintendo’s own space-game catalog describes its selection as adventures involving distant galaxies, futuristic starships and alien civilizations. That catalog is a useful starting point, but “space game” does not guarantee the same structure. Some games are survival sandboxes, some are authored role-playing adventures, and some are older party-based classics. Choosing by structure prevents disappointment when a substitute shares the setting but not the pacing or progression model.
It also helps to separate system availability from product identity. A title can have a Switch release, a native Switch 2 edition, and an upgrade path that are listed separately. The name on the store page, the console version, the format and your account region all affect what you actually receive.

What you do in it
Nintendo describes No Man’s Sky as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated universe.” Its listed activities cover travel from deep space to planetary surfaces, discovering worlds, dealing with hostile creatures and pirates, and improving a ship, weapon and suit. You can pursue different roles, including fighter, trader or explorer, rather than follow one required career.
That combination makes it the clearest recommendation for someone whose main Starfield fantasy is leaving a planet, crossing space and deciding what to investigate next. The procedural universe supports discovery as the central activity, while survival pressures and upgrade decisions give travel a practical purpose. Settlements, enhanced visuals and multiplayer are specifically identified as Switch 2 features in Nintendo’s listing.
The role options are useful if you want to set your own priorities. A fighter-oriented session can emphasize hostile encounters, while a trader or explorer approach gives you a different reason to move between locations. Ship, weapon and suit improvements mean that exploration is not only sightseeing: equipment decisions shape what you can attempt next. Multiplayer is another Switch 2-listed feature for players who prefer to share that activity rather than play entirely alone.
Where it differs from Starfield
No Man’s Sky is an exploration-first sandbox. Its identity comes from procedural discovery, survival and self-directed play, not from reproducing a tightly authored role-playing campaign. If your priority is a carefully staged sequence of quests, named companions and a single dramatic storyline, The Outer Worlds or a compatible-platform game in the Mass Effect series may suit you better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe distinction also affects how you measure progress. In a sandbox, a satisfying session may be finding a planet, gathering resources, improving equipment or choosing a new route. The game does not need to provide the same kind of quest-to-quest momentum as a conventional narrative RPG to fulfill its purpose. Conversely, if you need every outing to advance a designed plot, its freedom can feel less directed than you expect.
Switch 2 edition and purchase checks
Nintendo’s product page identifies a digital Nintendo Switch 2 edition and separately references an upgrade pack. It also presents a Switch version, so read the title and edition label carefully rather than assuming every listing is the same product. The available listings do not establish physical-cartridge availability for the Switch 2 edition.
Hello Games lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2 platforms and says the game receives regular major updates. Its factsheet notes that prices vary by platform and country and can change, so a price quoted elsewhere should not be treated as a current universal price. Before purchasing, confirm whether you are buying the native Switch 2 edition, a Switch release, or an upgrade path, and check the region shown on your Nintendo account.

If you are buying for someone else, confirm which console they use and whether the purchase is intended to be digital.

The Outer Worlds: the directed space RPG pick
Why it fits a different player
The Outer Worlds is the recommendation for a reader who wants a more authored science-fiction role-playing experience. Nintendo includes it in its official space-game catalog, and Space.com’s platform roundup lists Nintendo Switch. In this context, “directed” means the game is a better match for a player who wants designed quests, a clear narrative route and RPG progression shaped by authored situations rather than an essentially endless procedural universe.
Choose it when your ideal replacement for Starfield is not simply “more planets,” but a campaign with a deliberate structure and a stronger sense of narrative direction. It answers the story-led part of the request more directly than No Man’s Sky. You should expect the appeal to come from moving through a designed science-fiction adventure, not from endlessly generating new destinations.
This is also the pick for readers who want a conventional RPG rhythm: encounter a situation, make a decision, see how the story responds, and continue through a planned campaign. The recommendation does not claim identical systems or story content to Starfield; it identifies the closer fit for authored progression among the Switch choices covered here.
What to verify before buying
Nintendo’s catalog inclusion and Space.com’s platform list do not establish one definitive current SKU, physical format or regional store entry for every Switch owner. Search the Nintendo eShop or your local retailer for the exact edition, confirm that the listing is for Nintendo Switch, and check whether any version or content distinction applies in your region. Do not infer current inventory from an older platform roundup.
Check the full product title before adding it to your cart. A listing can describe a base game, a bundle or another edition, and a platform article may not distinguish those products. If a retailer shows a price, treat it as the current price for that retailer and region rather than a universal cost; the sources do not establish a stable price to quote.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: classic party-based choices
Which KOTOR experience this recommendation refers to
“KOTOR” can mean two separate games. The first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the clearest single recommendation when you want a classic party-based role-playing campaign in a space-opera setting. KOTOR II is a separate release with its own story and listing; do not treat the two as one product when checking a store page.
Space.com describes the KOTOR games as party-based RPGs built around light- and dark-side choices. Pocket Tactics lists KOTOR 1 and 2 among Switch and mobile alternatives for people looking for games like Starfield. Their appeal is therefore different from the freeform travel of No Man’s Sky: you assemble a party, make consequential character decisions and experience a structured space-fantasy narrative.
The party structure changes the question you ask of a game. Instead of choosing only where to fly next, you consider which companions belong in the group and how an alignment decision changes the role-playing experience. That is why KOTOR can satisfy a player who asked for “an RPG in space” even though it is not an open-ended exploration sandbox.
Who should choose it
KOTOR is a strong fit if companions, alignment decisions and old-school role-playing systems matter more to you than seamless movement between planets. It is also the most appropriate choice in this list for someone who wants the feeling of a classic computer role-playing game translated into a space-opera setting.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Choose the first game when you want one clearly identified entry rather than a trilogy-sized commitment. Choose KOTOR II only after confirming that its separate story and product listing are what you want. Neither should be described as the same kind of exploration experience as No Man’s Sky.
Edition and regional caution
Because two games share the KOTOR name, identify the numbered release on the store page. The editorial listings support Switch availability for KOTOR releases, but they do not establish a single current physical or digital format for every region. Confirm the live Nintendo listing, supported language options and edition details before purchase.
Do not assume that a search result for “KOTOR” identifies the first game. Check the cover title, publisher information and platform label, then verify the product page in your account region. As with the other recommendations, an older editorial listing cannot guarantee current stock or a particular format.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition: the best non-Switch bonus option
What it offers
Mass Effect Legendary Edition collects the Mass Effect trilogy with downloadable content and quality-of-life upgrades. Space.com presents the series as a character-driven action RPG spanning the Milky Way, with relationships and decisions that carry across a larger story. That makes it the broadest recommendation here for a player who wants a sustained space-opera campaign rather than a single contained adventure.
The trilogy format is the important contrast with the Switch recommendations. You are choosing a connected multi-game story, not a procedural universe or one standalone classic. It is a particularly good answer for someone whose favorite part of the Starfield idea is living with a cast of characters and seeing choices matter over a long arc.
Why it is not a Switch 2 recommendation
The platform line in Space.com’s roundup lists PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It does not list Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. For that reason, treat Mass Effect Legendary Edition as a bonus option only if you already have one of those compatible systems. Do not buy it expecting a Switch 2 version based on this information.
This distinction should remain visible in any shopping guide: Mass Effect is a strong thematic alternative, but it does not solve the hardware problem for a Switch 2-only household. Verify the supported platform on the store page for your system before purchase.
Match the game to the part of Starfield you wanted
If you wanted to explore without a fixed route
Choose No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Its procedural universe, space-to-planet travel, discovery loop and player-directed roles are the closest fit for self-directed roaming on Nintendo’s system. Expect to make your own goals and balance survival with upgrades rather than follow only a linear chain of authored missions.
If you wanted a designed science-fiction campaign
Choose The Outer Worlds. Its place in Nintendo’s space catalog and its identification in platform roundups make it the most natural Switch recommendation for a directed RPG story. Verify the current regional listing because catalog inclusion does not guarantee identical availability everywhere.
If you wanted companions and moral choices
Choose the first Knights of the Old Republic, while checking that you are selecting KOTOR 1 rather than KOTOR II. Its party structure and light- and dark-side decisions address the role-playing side of the request more directly than a survival sandbox.

None of these is a one-to-one replacement. No Man’s Sky emphasizes exploration and survival, The Outer Worlds emphasizes authored RPG direction, KOTOR emphasizes party choices, and Mass Effect emphasizes a connected character-driven trilogy on other systems. That honest division is more useful than promising a nonexistent equivalent.
A practical Switch 2 buying checklist
- Decide which structure you want. Pick exploration and survival for No Man’s Sky, a directed campaign for The Outer Worlds, or party-based choices for KOTOR.
- Read the complete product title. Nintendo lists both Switch and Switch 2 versions of No Man’s Sky, plus an upgrade pack. Make sure the listing matches your console and the edition you intend to own.
- Check the format. The Switch 2 listing for No Man’s Sky is identified as digital. The available listings do not confirm a physical cartridge, so do not assume one exists.
- Confirm your region. Catalog pages and older roundups can describe availability broadly, while your local eShop may show a different edition, price or release status.
- Verify the current SKU immediately before payment. For The Outer Worlds and KOTOR, check the live Nintendo listing rather than relying only on a dated platform article.
- Use a different system for Mass Effect. The platform list supports PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, not Switch 2.
- Check the upgrade language. If you already own a Switch copy of No Man’s Sky, read what Nintendo’s upgrade-pack listing actually covers instead of assuming the native edition is included automatically.
- Do not use an old price as a budget promise. Hello Games says prices vary by platform and country and can change. Compare the live regional price at checkout.
What this list can and cannot promise
These recommendations combine Nintendo product and catalog descriptions, Hello Games’ platform information, Bethesda’s 2026 roadmap, and dated editorial platform roundups accessed on October 13, 2026. They are not hands-on performance tests, frame-rate measurements or completion-time estimates. No independent player-count, sales, review-score or hours-to-complete statistic is established here, so none should be used to rank the games.
Store availability is especially changeable. A game appearing in a catalog or roundup does not prove that every region has the same digital edition, physical stock or upgrade entitlement today. Check the live listing for your account region and console model before purchase. This is particularly important for the separate Switch and Switch 2 listings for No Man’s Sky, the two KOTOR releases, and any current edition of The Outer Worlds.
The recommendations also do not imply identical controls, performance, save features or content between platforms. The supported-platform statements establish where a product is listed, not how every version compares technically. For buying decisions, use the current product page for the exact console and format you own.

Final recommendation
Start with No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition if the thing you wanted from Starfield was the freedom to leave a planet, discover another one and improve your ship and gear along the way. Pick The Outer Worlds when authored story and directed RPG progression matter more than infinite discovery. Pick the first Knights of the Old Republic for party-based role-playing and light-versus-dark choices. If you own a PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, add Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a connected trilogy and character-focused space opera. None is Starfield on Switch 2, but each targets a different reason you might have wanted it.
