What Is Deadlock? Its Lanes, Heroes, and MOBA-Shooter Gameplay Explained

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Deadlock is a third-person hero shooter built around a MOBA-style match structure. You choose a hero, fight alongside advancing troopers in lanes, collect souls, spend them on items, and help push through enemy defenses toward the opposing base. Shooting and abilities decide individual fights, but lane pressure, shared objectives and economic progression decide whether those fights turn into a win.

Valve still describes Deadlock as a multiplayer game in early development. As of October 13, 2026, its Steam listing says access is limited to friend invites through playtesters, the release date is to be announced, and both the artwork and gameplay are experimental. Details such as heroes, balance, modes and map rules can therefore change.

What Deadlock is at its core

Deadlock combines the direct control of a third-person shooter with the team-and-lane framework associated with a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). The camera sits behind your chosen hero. You aim weapons, move through the environment, use character abilities and fight other player-controlled heroes directly. At the same time, the match is organized around lanes, advancing troopers, defensive structures, purchasable items, a progression currency called souls and an enemy base that your team must attack.

That combination is more important than either label by itself. Deadlock is not simply a series of isolated gunfights, and it is not a traditional top-down MOBA in which you mainly issue commands from above. Every firefight occurs inside a larger contest for lane space and resources. Winning a duel can let your team move forward, collect more souls or threaten defenses; losing one can give the other team room to advance.

An independent Deadlock Handbook guide updated October 9, 2026, and checked against the October 6 patch, describes the format as 6v6. That figure explains the team scale reported for the current build, but it should not be treated as a permanent specification while Valve continues development.

Is Deadlock a MOBA or a shooter?

The most accurate short answer is both. Calling it only a shooter misses the lane economy and base objective. Calling it only a MOBA misses the importance of aiming, weapon handling, movement and real-time third-person combat.

Part of the experience Shooter characteristics MOBA characteristics
Moment-to-moment control Third-person aiming, gunfire, movement and direct hero combat Abilities must be used around team positioning and objectives
Match structure Players personally control a hero during every encounter Lanes, advancing troopers, defenses and a base objective organize the map
Progression Combat performance affects what you can do in later engagements Souls collected during play are spent on items that develop your hero
Strategy Mechanical accuracy, movement and ability timing matter Hero selection, lane pressure, resource use and adaptation to balance matter

In practical terms, you are aiming at enemies while also asking MOBA questions: Which lane needs help? Can your team safely contest the next wave of troopers? Is it better to fight now or spend the souls you have earned? Can a successful skirmish create enough space to damage a defense? The genre blend is the game’s central design rather than a marketing distinction.

What you do during a match

The high-level loop is straightforward even though the decisions within it can become complex: choose a hero, join a lane, fight around allied and enemy troopers, collect souls, buy items, win space and advance toward the opposing base.

Choose a hero

At the beginning, you select one player-controlled hero. Heroes differ through their weapons and abilities, so your choice determines how you approach fights and how you contribute to a lane. One hero may be more comfortable initiating a confrontation, another may create space with abilities, and another may be better suited to dealing damage from a safer position. Those are broad play-style distinctions, not a fixed class chart: Valve’s changing build does not support treating a permanent roster or taxonomy as settled.

Enter a lane with your troopers

Lanes are routes across the map where allied and enemy forces meet. Your team’s troopers advance along a route toward enemy defenses, while opposing troopers move back toward you. Heroes fight near these waves, using the units as a source of pressure and as a reason for both teams to contest the same space.

Troopers connect personal combat to map progress. A hero can win a duel but still fail to make meaningful progress if the opposing wave remains intact. Conversely, controlling the area around a wave can allow your team to move forward without taking an unnecessary fight. The exact number of lanes, wave timing and map geometry are not treated as fixed here because Valve continues to revise the game.

Collect souls

Souls are the match currency described in current gameplay guides. Lane activity and combat create opportunities to collect them, turning time spent near a wave into character progression. This is why simply chasing enemy heroes is not always the best use of your attention: a safe lane position that lets you gather souls can improve your later options.

The soul system also gives the lane contest an economic dimension. Two heroes can have similar weapons and abilities, yet the one who has collected and converted more souls may reach a later fight with stronger item choices. The precise collection rules and values can change with updates, so the stable idea is the link between lane participation, resources and growth rather than a specific numerical payout.

Spend souls on items

An item shop lets you turn collected souls into purchases for your hero. Items form the bridge between what happened earlier in the match and what your hero can do next. Buying is therefore a strategic decision, not just a shopping intermission: you are choosing how to respond to the current fight pattern and where your hero needs improvement.

Current sources do not establish a permanent item list, prices or purchase sequence. Those details are especially likely to move during early development. What remains central is that souls are earned in the match and spent through an item system that creates progression before the final base assault.

Push toward the enemy base

As your team wins lane space and keeps its troopers moving, it can approach enemy defenses and eventually the opposing base. The objective is not to accumulate eliminations for their own sake; fights matter because they help your team protect its wave, break through defenses or prevent the other team from doing the same.

The broad win condition is the destruction of the enemy base. The route from a first lane clash to that final objective is subject to ongoing tuning, so avoid assuming a permanent order of named structures or map events unless a current Valve update specifies it.

Why lanes matter

A lane is both a combat location and a stream of resources. It gives heroes a place to meet enemy players, places troopers on a predictable route and creates a front line that can move toward defenses. Because souls are tied to activity in the match, lane control affects how quickly heroes can improve their items as well as how close a team is to the enemy base.

  • Space: Holding an area around a wave makes it easier for allied troopers to continue forward and harder for opponents to collect resources safely.
  • Pressure: A pushed wave forces the opposing team to respond, which can limit where its heroes can move.
  • Risk: Advancing too far without support can expose a hero to direct combat, so progress has to be balanced against survival.
  • Economy: Time spent contesting a lane can produce souls and therefore better item options for later engagements.
  • Objective access: Moving through a lane is the practical route toward enemy defenses and, ultimately, the base.

This is why Deadlock’s fights feel different from matches in a conventional arena shooter. A kill can be valuable, but its strategic value comes from what it enables: a safer wave, a resource window, a defensive break or a chance to move the front line. A team that wins aim duels but ignores lanes may surrender the larger objective race.

How heroes fit into the game

Heroes are the player-facing identity of Deadlock. Your hero supplies the weapons and abilities you use in every encounter, so hero choice shapes your preferred distance, movement pattern, timing and contribution to the team. The surrounding lane system then asks you to apply that toolkit in a specific context: protecting or contesting troopers, gathering souls and helping a push.

Hero choice is strategic

Because every player selects a distinct hero, a team’s options depend partly on which characters are available and how their abilities complement one another. Selection is not merely cosmetic. It affects who can take space, who can threaten an enemy, who can support a push and which kinds of fights the team wants to create.

Valve’s January 30, 2026 developer update added hero bans to Standard Mode and Street Brawl. The addition shows that hero selection is strategically significant in the evolving game: teams may need to account for particularly influential choices rather than treating the roster as interchangeable. It also demonstrates why a description of the current hero pool should be dated instead of presented as permanent.

Balance changes are part of the experience

Valve’s patch notes include hero-specific balance adjustments as well as changes to broader systems. A hero that feels unusually strong, difficult to use or valuable in a particular lane can be changed in a later update. Treat any fixed claim about the “best” hero, a definitive role or an unchanging ability interaction as temporary unless Valve confirms it for the build you are playing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful mental model is to learn what your selected hero is trying to accomplish, then adapt as the game changes. A hero’s weapons and abilities define its tools; lanes, troopers, souls and items determine when and where those tools matter.

Deadlock’s current development status

Valve’s Steam listing currently calls Deadlock “a multiplayer game in early development.” It also states: “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” The listing gives the release date as to be announced. These statements describe the product’s availability as of October 13, 2026, not a promise of a future launch schedule.

The same listing warns that the game uses temporary art and experimental gameplay. That warning explains why high-level ideas can be described with confidence while exact details require caution. Valve’s Steam Community page continues to carry announcements, including recent hero announcements, another sign that content is still being added and revised.

There is no confirmed public release date in the cited official material, and the current access statement does not establish open access, a particular launch model or support for platforms beyond the Steam listing. Prospective players should rely on Valve’s current announcement and store pages for any change in access.

What is stable and what can change

Some parts of the concept are clear enough to use as a lasting explanation: Deadlock is a third-person, hero-controlled game; its matches use lanes and troopers; players collect souls and buy items; and teams push toward an enemy base. Those elements explain how to picture a match without pretending that every rule is final.

Other details should be treated as build-specific:

  • the exact hero roster and each hero’s balance;
  • the number and arrangement of lanes;
  • trooper timing, durability and resource rules;
  • item names, prices and effects;
  • the order or design of defensive structures and other objectives;
  • which modes are available and how their rules differ.

Frequent updates can change these details without changing the game’s basic identity. A guide written for one patch may explain the loop accurately while becoming outdated on numbers, interfaces or preferred strategies.

A plain-language picture of one match

Imagine your team selecting heroes and moving to lanes as allied troopers advance. You take fights near the wave rather than wandering solely in search of opponents. When your team controls the area, you collect souls and return to the shop with more ways to develop your hero. The resulting item choice helps you contest the next encounter, protect your troopers or challenge the enemy’s position.

If your team wins enough space, the wave moves closer to enemy defenses. The opposing heroes must decide whether to fight you, clear the pressure or give ground. A successful engagement can therefore produce several benefits at once: fewer immediate threats, more room to collect souls and a safer route for your troopers. The same logic works in reverse when your team loses a fight. You may have to give up space, protect your own approach and wait for another opportunity to rebuild pressure.

That sequence—hero control inside a lane contest, resource collection, item progression and an advance toward the base—is the clearest way to understand Deadlock before worrying about patch-specific numbers.
