Standard is the best all-purpose Stardew Valley farm if you want room to lay out crops and animals. Choose Meadowlands for an animal-focused start, or Four Corners for co-op and clearly divided activity zones. There is no universally best map: each trades some flexibility for a particular feature.
How this ranking works
This ranking weighs usable crop and building space, sprinkler compatibility, map-specific resources or skills, early-game benefits, combat pressure, and multiplayer layout. The tile counts below are reference-page figures from the Stardew Valley Wiki farm maps reference; the page does not state a publication year. They are not independent measurements or gameplay tests, and the map’s special features may matter more than raw tillable area.

| Rank | Farm | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Standard | Flexible crop and animal layouts | Few distinctive resource bonuses |
| 2 | Meadowlands | Players who want animals early | Less crop space than Standard |
| 3 | Four Corners | Co-op groups or players who prefer separate activity areas | Less contiguous crop land than Standard |
| 4 | Forest | Foraging and renewable hardwood | Trees, ponds, and grass reduce farming space |
| 5 | Riverland | Fishing-oriented play | Water limits layout flexibility |
| 6 | Hill-top | Mining-resource features on the farm | Cliffs and a stream interrupt the layout; resource spawns depend on Mining level |
| 7 | Beach | Open space, fishing, foraging, and a different challenge | Sprinklers do not work on sandy soil |
| 8 | Wilderness | Players who want combat encounters at home | Night monsters add pressure and grant reduced Combat experience |
The order among specialist maps is subjective: move a farm up if its defining feature is the one you want to use most. In particular, Meadowlands can be the better starting choice for animal raising, and Four Corners can beat Standard for a group that values distinct zones.
1. Standard: the safest all-purpose choice
Standard has the largest listed tillable area: 3,427 tiles, plus 235 non-tillable tiles that can be built on. Most of the land is suited to farming, making it the easiest map to shape around crops, animals, or a mix of both. Its advantage is flexibility rather than a special resource or skill perk.

2. Meadowlands: start with animals
Meadowlands begins with a coop and two chickens, so animal raising is part of the farm from the start rather than a later project. It also features chewy blue grass, described by the Stardew Valley Wiki Meadowlands reference as a better animal food source. Pick it for that early animal focus and its theme; Standard remains the more flexible pick for maximizing crop space.
3. Four Corners: a natural fit for co-op
Four Corners divides the farm into areas that echo features of the Forest, Standard, pond, and Hill-top maps. Its 2,952 tillable tiles give it substantial crop space, though less than Standard’s, and the divided layout makes it easier to give different areas distinct purposes. The map was designed with multiplayer in mind, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki multiplayer reference. Solo players who like a naturally organized farm may also appreciate the quadrants.
4. Forest: hardwood and seasonal forage
Forest has renewable large stumps that provide hardwood, seasonal forage in western clearings, and unique weeds that always drop Mixed Seeds. Those features give the map a resource-gathering identity, but its 1,413 tillable tiles are the smallest listed total. It also has 1,490 non-tillable tiles that can be built on, according to the farm-map reference. Choose it for forage and hardwood rather than for a large crop field.
5. Riverland: make fishing part of farm life
Water channels occupy much of Riverland, creating a distinctive fishing-oriented layout while reducing room for crops and buildings. The map has 1,578 tillable tiles and 516 non-tillable buildable tiles in the reference. In version 1.6, players also start with a Fish Smoker. That addition strengthens its fishing theme, but does not remove the layout tradeoff.

6. Hill-top: mining features at the cost of a clean layout
Hill-top includes a special mining area where stones, ore nodes, and geode nodes spawn according to Mining level. Cliffs and a stream divide the usable space, so planning a large, uninterrupted farm is harder than on Standard. The map reference lists 1,648 tillable tiles. Choose it for the mining-area feature, not as a crop-space upgrade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Beach: space and variety, but not sprinkler automation
Beach offers open space, fishing and foraging options, and occasional supply crates. Its defining constraint is sandy soil: sprinklers do not work on sand. A smaller patch of non-sandy ground can support sprinklers, but that limits automated crop layouts. The reference lists 2,066 tillable tiles and about 2,141 non-tillable buildable tiles. The Wiki describes Beach as intended for seasoned players rather than as a first farm. Its open feel is appealing if you accept the sprinkler limitation.

8. Wilderness: choose combat encounters on purpose
Monsters spawn at night on Wilderness and scale with Combat level. Monsters that spawn on the farm award only one-third of normal Combat experience. At Combat level 9 or higher, the map has a chance to spawn Iridium Golems. With 2,131 tillable tiles, it is not the smallest farm, but its defining feature is the extra combat pressure—not a farming advantage. Pick it if encounters at home sound fun rather than inconvenient.
Choose before starting your save
The farm map is selected when you start a character, and the cited references say it cannot ordinarily be changed for that character. Decide based on the play you want to emphasize: broad layout freedom, an early animal start, fishing, foraging, mining features, combat, or multiplayer organization. If you are unsure and want room to experiment, Standard is the low-regret option.
