For a balanced starting point, leave Field of View at 70°, tune gamma until dark areas are readable on your display, and set motion blur to Low or Off if it makes movement harder to follow. Keep the HUD, minimap, and objective icons visible if they help you navigate. These are visibility and comfort adjustments—not a guaranteed FPS preset: Undead Labs does not publish controlled performance gains for individual settings.
Start with a visibility-first setup
State of Decay 2’s documented controls let you adjust what you see and how movement looks, but they do not establish a universal best preset for performance. Use the defaults as a baseline, change one option at a time, and judge both readability and smoothness on your own platform.

- Field of View: Start at 70° and change it in small steps if you want more of the surroundings in view or prefer a narrower view.
- Gamma: Adjust brightness for your display and room so dark scenes remain readable without making the image look washed out.
- Motion blur: Try Low or Off if blur during camera movement makes scenery or targets harder to read.
- HUD, minimap, and objective icons: Leave them on when they help you stay oriented; hide them only if you prefer a less cluttered screen.
What each setting changes
Field of View
Undead Labs’ Update 29 notes specify a range of 40–100°, with 70° as the default. The setting is at Settings > Video > Field of View. A wider view reveals more surroundings, but the comfortable choice depends on factors such as screen size and viewing distance; the official notes do not designate a best value beyond the default.
Undead Labs’ Update 29 notes describe the numeric range in degrees. Its accessibility page describes the control as a percentage range, so use the update notes’ 40–100° figures when setting a numeric target.

Gamma
Gamma changes in-game brightness. Undead Labs lists it among visual accessibility options available before starting the game, but does not give a recommended number. Adjust it by eye for your display and the room’s lighting rather than treating a particular value as universal.
Motion blur
The documented choices are Off, Low, and High. If blur during camera movement interferes with reading the scene, try Low or Off. Undead Labs says motion blur can be adjusted on PC and Xbox, but its documentation does not say disabling it improves frame rate.

HUD and navigation icons
The game provides visibility controls for the HUD, minimap, and in-world objective icons. These options affect how much interface information appears on screen; Undead Labs does not describe them as performance controls.

Can changing these settings improve performance?
The available Undead Labs documentation does not provide controlled, per-setting FPS results or a tested PC configuration. In particular, it does not establish a frame-rate gain from turning off motion blur or hiding interface elements. Treat those controls as visibility and comfort choices, and assess performance separately on the platform you use.
For historical console context, Undead Labs said Update 23 improvements delivered 60 frames per second at full 4K on Xbox Series X and 1080p on Xbox Series S. That was a developer statement about those consoles and that update, not a current guarantee for every system or a PC recommendation. See the Update 23 patch notes.

Troubleshoot poor PC performance
If the game runs poorly on PC, collect information about resource use while it is running instead of assuming one visual setting is responsible. Undead Labs asks players submitting a support report to observe CPU, memory, and GPU usage and include notable usage information.
