The best Steam Deck alternative depends first on which games and launchers you need: choose a Windows handheld for broader PC software compatibility, or a SteamOS model if you want a more console-like interface. The ROG Ally X is a premium Windows option, the Legion Go favors a large screen and detachable controllers, and the Legion Go S comes in distinct Windows and SteamOS versions. None is a universal upgrade; portability, battery life, display size and exact configuration matter as much as performance.

Start with your game library and operating system

Before comparing chips or screens, check whether the device runs the games and launchers you actually use. The Steam Deck and SteamOS handhelds offer a more console-oriented experience, while Windows handhelds provide the Windows environment and compatibility with PC software outside Steam. Compatibility still depends on the individual game, launcher, anti-cheat requirements and configuration; do not assume that every PC game works equally well on every handheld.

The Lenovo Legion Go S is sold in both Windows and SteamOS versions, so the model name alone does not identify its software experience. Tom’s Guide characterizes the SteamOS version as more console-like to use. Confirm the operating system on the specific listing before buying.

Which Steam Deck alternative fits your priorities?

Device Best fit Important tradeoff or qualification
ASUS ROG Ally X Players who want a premium Windows handheld TechRadar reports stronger performance than Steam Deck in its own game testing, but those results depend on its review conditions. It also flags the Ally X’s higher price.
Lenovo Legion Go Players who prioritize a large screen or detachable controllers Its size and bulk work against travel convenience; TechRadar notes weak battery life in its testing.
Lenovo Legion Go S Players choosing between Windows and a SteamOS-style handheld experience It has separate Windows and SteamOS versions. Check the exact OS and configuration rather than relying on the model name alone.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ Players considering another Windows handheld option Do not use test data for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ as though it described the Claw 8 AI+; the names refer to distinct models.
ROG Xbox Ally X Players considering an Xbox-oriented Windows handheld Confirm the generation and exact listing before comparing specifications or buying.
Nintendo Switch Lite or Switch 2 Players who want a separate handheld console library These are not replacements for access to an existing general PC game library. TechRadar specifically notes that Switch Lite is limited to handheld games and cannot play the reader’s existing PC library.

ASUS ROG Ally X: a premium Windows alternative

TechRadar’s covered ROG Ally X configuration uses an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, Windows 11, 24 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage. The publication reports better performance than Steam Deck in its own game tests, but that is a review-specific result, not a guarantee across games or settings. It identifies the higher price as a drawback, so weigh the Windows experience and tested performance against what you would pay for the exact configuration in your region.

Lenovo Legion Go: prioritize screen and flexibility

The Legion Go is distinctive for its large display and detachable controllers. Pocket Tactics lists an 8.8-inch, 2560 × 1600, 144 Hz screen, 16 GB of RAM and a 49.2 Wh battery for the configuration it describes. Those specifications make it worth considering if screen area and controller flexibility matter more than a compact travel setup.

The compromise is physical size: TechRadar describes the Legion Go as bulky and heavy, and reports weak battery life in its testing. A large, high-resolution, fast-refresh display can be attractive at home yet less convenient to carry and demanding during play. Treat screen size as a preference, not an automatic advantage.

Legion Go S: choose the operating system deliberately

The Legion Go S is available with either Windows or SteamOS, and these are meaningfully different options rather than cosmetic variants. Tom’s Guide describes an 8-inch, 1920 × 1200, 120 Hz LCD and says the SteamOS version is more console-like in usability. Check the operating system, memory, storage and price for the exact SKU; prices and configurations can change, so older quoted prices may not match a current listing.

MSI Claw and ROG Xbox Ally X: verify the exact model

Buyer guides also include the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and ROG Xbox Ally X among the alternatives. Model naming matters: Tom’s Guide’s battery table reports a result for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, a distinct model name. That result should not be attributed to the Claw 8 AI+ without evidence that the tested device is the same configuration. Likewise, confirm which generation and listing a ROG Xbox Ally X recommendation refers to before comparing it with another handheld.

How to compare performance and battery life fairly

Handheld performance is not a single device-wide score. Results change with the game, resolution, graphics settings, power mode and review method. When a publication says one model performs better, read the tested game and conditions before applying that conclusion to your own library.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison battery table reports the following durations. They are review test results, not promised runtimes:

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
Device in Tom’s Guide table Reported battery-test duration
Steam Deck OLED 3 hours 12 minutes
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X 2 hours 56 minutes
Lenovo Legion Go S (SteamOS) 1 hour 45 minutes
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ 4 hours 10 minutes

Tom’s Guide cautions that runtime varies with the game and settings, and says it does not use a standardized procedure for Nintendo devices and SteamOS machines. The table therefore is not a fully controlled apples-to-apples ranking. In particular, its MSI figure applies to the Claw 8 EX AI+, not automatically to the Claw 8 AI+.

Check the exact configuration before you buy

Names such as “Ally X” or “Legion Go S” are not enough to confirm what a listing includes. Before checkout, verify the regional SKU, operating system, RAM, storage and current price. Confirm stock and the seller’s configuration details as well; handheld prices and availability are volatile, and a recommendation for one version may not apply to another.
