Their Steam pages list modest Windows minimum requirements, but those figures are a screening guide—not a promise of smooth performance. This is a historically framed guide to two candidates, not a comprehensive ranking of every suitable Steam game.
Two Steam games to consider for a low-end PC
The official minimum requirements below are for Windows and come from each game’s Steam Store listing. Both pages provide separate requirements for other operating systems. Check the listing for your operating system before buying or installing.

These are developer-published minimum specifications shown on Steam, not results from independent tests. Neither listing establishes a frame rate or guarantees that a particular older PC or integrated GPU will run the game well.
Stardew Valley: a farming and life-simulation option
Stardew Valley is the stronger fit if you want a relaxed farming, role-playing, and simulation game. Its Windows listing specifies a 2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 256 MB video memory with shader model 3.0 or higher, DirectX 10, and 500 MB of available storage. Portal 2: a first-person puzzle and adventure option
Portal 2 offers a very different choice: a first-person action-adventure built around puzzles. Its Windows minimum listing calls for 2 GB RAM, a graphics card with at least 128 MB video memory and Pixel Shader 2.0b support, DirectX 9.0c, and 8 GB of storage. The Steam listing also provides separate Linux requirements. Check the Portal 2 Steam Store page for the current details.
How to check whether your PC meets a game’s requirements
- Open the game’s Steam Store page and find its system requirements. Check the section for your operating system; requirements can differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Compare your PC’s processor, RAM, graphics hardware and supported features, operating system, and available storage with the listed minimums. A graphics card’s memory amount alone does not establish that it supports the required shader features or API.
- Treat a match as an initial compatibility check, not a performance guarantee. Steam Support cautions that simply meeting system requirements does not ensure high FPS or strong in-game performance; hardware combinations and drivers also matter. Read Steam Support’s system requirements guidance for more context.
- If you use integrated graphics and encounter problems, Steam Support suggests trying low shader detail and windowed mode. These are possible troubleshooting adjustments, not universal fixes.
What Steam Deck compatibility does—and doesn’t—tell you
Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility rating describes how a game works on the Deck. It is useful when assessing a Deck, but it is not a benchmark for a low-end Windows laptop or desktop: those systems may have different graphics hardware, drivers, and operating systems. How to interpret player reports
Community discussions can help you find examples of older PCs or integrated graphics being used, but a report about one machine is anecdotal. It cannot guarantee the same result on your PC, even if the hardware sounds similar. For useful comparisons, look for the exact processor and graphics hardware, game settings, resolution, and game version; without those details, an FPS claim is difficult to apply to another system.
The phrase “Best Retail Lowend Games 2024” appeared in a community discussion on September 19, 2024. That wording reflects a player search, not a verified ranking. The two games here are candidates supported by published minimum requirements, not a tested or comprehensive “best” list.
