For late-game silver, Blood and Wine’s Aerondight is the standout. For steel, choose Iris for its special attacks or the crafted relic Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword when you want the stats-focused option.
How to choose the right sword
The game’s basic distinction is straightforward: silver swords are for monsters, while steel swords are for humans. CD PROJEKT RED describes Geralt’s two swords as “silver for monsters, steel for humans” on its official Witcher 3 page. That means a useful recommendation has to separate the two weapon types rather than put every sword in one ranking.
Within each type, weigh your progression stage, whether you own Blood and Wine, and whether you prefer a weapon effect, raw stats, or synergy with a Witcher-school set. The comparisons below come from editorial guides, not an official developer ranking; there is no version- and level-matched damage table here that establishes a universal numerical winner.
Best silver sword: Aerondight
For a late-game player with Blood and Wine, Aerondight is the clearest silver-sword recommendation. It builds charge as you land successive hits. At full charge, it can produce critical hits, and killing an enemy while fully charged permanently increases the sword’s damage, according to the WitcherHour sword guide. Its reward is therefore not just a strong weapon effect: using it well means maintaining charge and securing qualifying kills.

Where to get Aerondight
Aerondight is awarded through the Blood and Wine side quest There Can Be Only One. The guide says Geralt must demonstrate five chivalric virtues to receive it. Blood and Wine is a major expansion; CD PROJEKT RED says its content is included in the Complete Edition, which also includes Hearts of Stone. Check the publisher’s official edition information for current edition details.
Best steel swords
Iris: choose it for its special effect
Iris is the effect-driven steel choice. Its strong attacks hit twice, and its charged attack delivers a powerful blow at the cost of vitality. That makes its appeal distinct from simply comparing listed damage: the special attack can be valuable if it fits how you fight, but spending vitality is a real trade-off. These effects and the comparison with Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword are described in the WitcherHour guide.

Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword: choose it for stats
The crafted relic Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword is the stats-oriented contender. WitcherHour describes the relic version as having much higher stats than its magic version and places the relic diagram at Arthach Palace Ruins in northern Toussaint. Treat that location and the guide’s stats comparison as guide-reported details, rather than a publisher-confirmed ranking. The choice between it and Iris comes down to whether you value the stats-focused option or Iris’s distinctive effect.
Witcher-school swords: best when they fit your build
School swords can make more sense than a standalone weapon when their attributes suit your build or when you are working toward a six-piece school set bonus. They are situational choices, not one universally superior family.

- Feline: A fit for fast-attack builds and the Feline set bonus.
- Griffin: A fit for Sign-oriented play and the Griffin set bonus.
- Ursine: A fit for a tankier, strong-attack build and the Ursine set bonus.
- Wolven: Consider its swords as part of a school-set plan; the guide identifies school swords generally as useful for progression, specific stats, or a set bonus.
These build associations are guide-level recommendations. Choose the sword that supports your combat plan rather than treating a school name as a universal ranking.
Best early-game swords: Viper
If you are starting out, the Viper swords are an early progression option: the reviewed guide says they can be used from level one and places their diagrams in White Orchard. They are useful for getting established, not a late-game alternative to Aerondight or the Toussaint steel options. See the WitcherHour guide for its Viper acquisition details.

Quick recommendations by situation
| Situation | Consider | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late-game silver, with Blood and Wine | Aerondight | Builds charge, offers critical hits at full charge, and can permanently gain damage after full-charge kills. | Requires the expansion quest and managing its charge. |
| Steel sword with a distinctive effect | Iris | Strong attacks hit twice; the charged attack delivers a powerful blow. | The charged effect consumes vitality. |
| Steel sword prioritizing stats | Crafted relic Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword | The guide presents it as the stats-focused option. | Less compelling if Iris’s special effect is your priority. |
| Fast-attack build or school set | Feline swords | Fit a fast-attack approach and can contribute to the school set bonus. | A build-synergy choice, not a universal winner. |
| Sign-focused build | Griffin swords | Fit Sign-oriented play and can contribute to the school set bonus. | Build-specific. |
| Tanky, strong-attack build | Ursine swords | Complement a tankier approach and can contribute to the school set bonus. | Build-specific. |
| Early game | Viper swords | The guide says they are usable from level one, with diagrams in White Orchard. | An early progression choice, not a late-game pick. |
Should you buy swords or craft them?
There is no single answer for every sword in this comparison. Aerondight is a quest reward, the relic Toussaint Knight’s Steel Sword is crafted from a diagram, and school swords are worth considering when their stats or set bonus fit your build. For the relic Toussaint sword in particular, the guide identifies crafting and a diagram at Arthach Palace Ruins; it does not establish a general rule that crafted swords always beat purchased ones.
