Best Steam Machine Graphics Settings for Higher Frame Rates With an eGPU

Use resolution-aware, one-setting-at-a-time tuning and Steam’s Performance Monitor to find better game-specific settings. An eGPU remains an unconfirmed, experimental modification.

For higher frame rates on a Steam Machine, tune the resolution and demanding graphics options in the game you are playing, then use Steam’s Performance Monitor to check whether the GPU is limiting performance. There is no universal best preset: the right settings depend on your display, Steam Machine configuration and game. Treat an eGPU as an experimental hardware modification, not a confirmed, broadly supported upgrade.

Why there is no universal best preset

Steam Support says picture-quality choices vary with the Steam Machine settings, the display and the individual game. That means the best starting point is the resolution you actually play at, followed by controlled changes to that game’s settings—not a preset claimed to work everywhere. Steam’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide also documents separate menus for hardware updates and SteamOS software updates, so revisit your settings after updates.

Valve describes Steam Machine in its Steamworks documentation as running SteamOS with a “discrete semi-custom AMD desktop class CPU and GPU.” That broad description does not determine how a particular game will perform: its workload, resolution and available options all matter.

A repeatable way to tune one game

  1. Record your starting point. Note the game’s resolution, quality preset, upscaler, frame-generation setting and observed frame rate. Menu labels differ between games.
  2. Turn on Steam’s In-Game Overlay Performance Monitor. Use it to check whether the GPU is the limiting factor. Steam also warns that performance can suffer when a game needs more video memory than is available; GPU limitation is not the only possible issue. See Steam’s troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Change one demanding option at a time. Lower a setting, then compare frame rate and image quality in the same scene or repeatable workload. This makes it easier to tell whether that particular change helped.
  4. Check the game’s upscaling options. If an upscaler is available, compare its quality modes and inspect the image rather than assuming one option is best. Support varies by title; a review found inconsistent FSR availability across its tested games (PC Gamer’s Steam Machine review).
  5. Judge frame generation separately. Record whether a displayed figure includes generated frames; it is not the same as the base rendering rate. Check for latency and image-quality tradeoffs as well as the displayed number.
  6. Recheck after updates. Game, SteamOS or hardware changes may affect settings or performance. Steam lists hardware updates and SteamOS updates as separate menu paths in its feature and troubleshooting guide.

How to read FPS claims that include frame generation

One review illustrates why a number needs its full configuration. In PC Gamer’s 2026 Cyberpunk 2077 test, the reviewer reported a 58–61 FPS average at 4K with Medium settings, ray tracing off, FSR Performance and 2x frame generation. The reviewer estimated the base rate at about 30 FPS and noted latency and image-quality compromises (PC Gamer’s review). That is one result for one game and configuration—not a performance target or guarantee for other Steam Machines, games or settings.

MINISFORUM DEG1 eGPU Dock, External GPU Docking Station for RTX 4090, AMD RX 7900 XTX, eGPU Enclosure Graphics Card Extension Support ATX/SFX Standard Power, Oculink Expansion Graphics Docking Station
  • 【Up Link & Down Link】Up link: Oculink 4i(PCIE4.0x4), Down Link: PCIEx16(PCIE4.0x4). Only Support Oculink.
  • 【Power Supply】This DEG1 supports ATX and SFX standard power supplies, which provides flexible power supply solutions for mini chassis.
  • 【Oculink Interfaces】Please kindly note the OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the machine needs to be turned off first.
  • 【Follow-start Function】The follow-start function is only compatible with MINISFORUM Mini PCs, it requires the use of original wires.
  • Note: The GPU is not included.

When comparing your own results, keep the base frame rate distinct from any figure that includes generated frames. A higher displayed rate may come with tradeoffs, so assess responsiveness and image quality in the game rather than optimizing for the number alone.

Does Steam Machine support an eGPU?

Official sources cited here do not establish a supported or broadly compatible Steam Machine eGPU upgrade. Tom’s Hardware reported one modification using a Radeon RX 9070 XT, an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter and an external GPU dock; the report says the boot drive was moved to USB-C storage (Tom’s Hardware report). This is evidence of a reported modification, not a plug-and-play recipe or a result to expect from another system.

A ValveSoftware GitHub issue is a hardware feature request for eGPU support. Valve’s OEM documentation advises ensuring Linux support and coordinating drivers for hardware. Neither source confirms a generally supported Steam Machine eGPU path.

If you are considering this advanced modification, verify the specific hardware revision, firmware, drivers and boot configuration before buying an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter or external GPU dock. The reported setup does not establish compatibility for other combinations.
