Steam’s rules allow released games to join seasonal sales, but that does not confirm a particular title’s participation or discount. Steam says a discount of 20% or more automatically triggers wishlist email notifications; it also says discounted games may appear in Steam specials based on tags, popularity, and recommendations. Those platform mechanics are not a promise of a sale price or placement. Check the live listing in your Steam region during the event rather than relying on old deal coverage. Which survival game should you buy on Steam?
Choose by the kind of pressure you want: a demanding zombie simulation, a cooperative building adventure, exploration beneath the sea, solitude in the wilderness, or the risk of hostile players. Survival games often combine resource gathering, crafting, and threats with needs such as hunger, thirst, temperature, or disease, but no one title needs to include every system.

Project Zomboid: deep zombie-survival simulation
Project Zomboid suits players who want survival to involve more than fighting zombies. Its interlocking systems include injuries, disease, farming, fishing, noise, and avoiding undead threats. That breadth creates a substantial learning investment, so it is a better match for players who enjoy planning and accepting setbacks than for someone seeking a quick, forgiving introduction.
Rank #2
- Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
- Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
- Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
Valheim: cooperative exploration and building
Valheim brings together a procedurally generated world, exploration, cooking, crafting, construction, and boss fights. It supports solo play as well as co-op, making it a strong choice if you want to build a base and venture outward with friends—or take on that loop alone.
Subnautica: underwater exploration
Subnautica centers survival on exploring underwater environments, gathering resources and sustenance, and building habitats and submarines. Pick it if discovery and environmental problem-solving appeal more than a focus on multiplayer conflict.
Rank #3
- Explore the island to gather resources and build your camp from scratch; Find immunity necklaces to ensure your safety during Tribal Councils
- Earn rewards and immunity by performing well during trials, but be careful not to get exhausted and avoid getting hurt so you don't forfeit
- Form alliances with strategies, read your competitors' personalities, and use everything learned to gain the upper hand during the Tribal Councils
- Enjoy the tropical paradise as you soak in stunning scenery and take in the sun; Watch out, you never know when a coconut might come crashing down
- Think you have what it takes to outdo your friends; Join the multiplayer mode and prove it
The Long Dark: solitary environmental challenge
The Long Dark is for players who want to contend with the elements and wildlife in an atmospheric wilderness. Its appeal is the contrast with zombie- or PvP-driven survival: the challenge is environmental, and the experience is solitary.
Rust: survival with a strong PvP emphasis
Rust is the outlier for anyone choosing a game to avoid player conflict. Other players are a principal threat, alongside hunger, thirst, and wildlife. Choose it if that competitive uncertainty is part of the appeal; look elsewhere if you want a reliably peaceful co-op or solo experience.
Raft: cooperative crafting on the water
Raft turns survival into a construction-centered loop: gather flotsam, expand your raft, and secure food and fresh water. Its co-op option makes it an approachable direction for players who want shared crafting and building on the water.
Quick Recap
How to choose during the sale
- Decide how much friction you want. Project Zomboid’s systems and learning curve point to a more demanding commitment; the other games offer distinct settings and loops rather than a single scale of difficulty.
- Choose your preferred threat. The shortlist spans zombies, environmental hazards and wildlife, underwater surroundings, and direct player conflict.
- Match solo or co-op to your plans. Valheim offers both solo and co-op play, while Raft is described as co-op-friendly. The Long Dark is a solitary fit; check the current Steam listing for any multiplayer details relevant to your setup.
- Compare the current regional price with your budget. The sources do not establish 2027 prices, discounts, or which games will participate. Wishlist titles you are considering and check their Steam pages during the event.
