Choose Court Mage for a defensive-support role; choose School of Ruin if your priority is spell damage and pressure on enemy spellcasters. These recommendations reflect the Early Access build listed as v0.4.5.115401 on October 8, 2026, and may change with future updates.
Which Wizard subclass should you choose?
The subclasses serve different party needs rather than forming a verified strongest-to-weakest ranking. Tactical Adventures’ Early Access class overview describes Court Mage as protective and School of Ruin as damage-oriented. The available sources do not provide controlled comparisons, damage benchmarks, or a validated spell rotation.
| Subclass | Best fit | What its mechanics emphasize |
|---|---|---|
| Court Mage | Players who want to help protect nearby allies. | Shield proficiency, a Protection fighting style reaction that can raise an adjacent ally’s AC, and Spell Shield for the Wizard and a nearby friendly creature, as described in the AlcastHQ Wizard reference. |
| School of Ruin | Players who want to focus on offensive magic and enemy spellcasters. | The official overview describes returning damage to an enemy spellcaster and repeating part of spell damage. The AlcastHQ reference also lists added damage on spell damage rolls and bonus damaging spells added to the spellbook. |
Choose Court Mage for defensive support
Court Mage is the natural fit if you want your Wizard to contribute to ally protection as well as spellcasting. Its described shield and reaction mechanics support a defensive role, particularly when an ally is adjacent. The sources establish the nature of those features, not how much they improve survival in a particular encounter.
Choose School of Ruin for offensive magic
School of Ruin is the better match if you want subclass features to reinforce spell damage and put pressure on opposing spellcasters. Its descriptions point toward an offensive identity, but they do not establish a damage advantage over Court Mage in every fight or party composition.

What does the Wizard gain as it levels?
The official class overview says that at level 2, Scholar grants expertise in one skill, while Memorize Spell lets the Wizard swap a prepared spell after a Short Rest. That flexibility is useful to consider when choosing a build: if adapting your prepared spells between rests matters to you, it is a class feature available beyond the subclass choice.
The AlcastHQ reference also lists Arcane Recovery and Scholar at level 2, and a feat or ability improvement at level 4. Treat that guide as a cross-check rather than a finished optimization plan: it identifies itself as a work in progress. The official overview dates from January 2026, and later updates mean specific higher-level advice should be checked against the live game.

How to make the choice for your party
- Pick Court Mage if ally protection is the role you want your Wizard to strengthen.
- Pick School of Ruin if you want to emphasize damaging magic and pressure on enemy spellcasters.
- Consider preparation flexibility if changing a prepared spell after a Short Rest is especially valuable to your approach; Memorize Spell is described as a level 2 feature.
- Recheck the current build before committing to detailed level-by-level choices, because the game is in Early Access and mechanics can change.
These are role-based recommendations, not results from playtesting or a quantified tier list. No reliable evidence here establishes one subclass as the strongest choice for every party or encounter.
