BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the closest structural substitute for 2XKO because both use two-character teams. Choose DRAGON BALL FighterZ if you want faster anime-style 3v3 tag/support play, or Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid if cross-play and cross-progression matter most. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a useful one-on-one training game rather than a tag replacement, while MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a separate 4v4 design whose current regional availability should be checked before purchase.

What is happening with 2XKO?

2XKO is Riot’s free-to-play fighting game for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Riot describes two ways to play: control both champions yourself in solo play, or share control with a friend in duo play. Its defining systems are tag and assist mechanics, so the games below are judged by team size, how characters enter or support one another, and how closely the overall format matches that model. See Riot’s current 2XKO game page for the live platform listing and feature description.

Riot’s linked development notice, dated August 20, 2026, says active development will end in December 2026. The notice also says the servers will remain online and that gameplay content will be unlocked in September. Ending active development is not an announcement of an immediate shutdown, so 2XKO may remain playable after December even though new development is ending. Conditions can change by platform and region; check Riot’s development update before making a long-term purchase or hardware decision.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls 4v4 team-versus design A deliberately different, larger-team format Official announcement gives a 2026 launch window for PS5, Steam and Epic; current regional store availability was not established A later feature describes a shared team health bar

No comparable, owner-published figure for active players, queue times or relative popularity was established for these games. Cross-play support does not guarantee a large population or short waits.

#1 Best Overall

Best direct substitute: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

Why it matches 2XKO most closely

Among the alternatives, this is the cleanest answer if your first requirement is a two-character team. PlayStation describes it as a fast-paced 2v2 team fighter and explicitly positions it for both pros and newcomers. That establishes the team-size match, not identical mechanics: you should not assume its tags, assists, resources or timing work exactly like 2XKO.

The crossover roster brings together characters from BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY. That makes it a strong choice when the appeal is selecting a pair from different series rather than building a larger three-character squad.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose it when matching 2XKO’s two-character structure matters more than franchise, platform or population considerations.
  • Choose it if you want a crossover cast that spans several anime and game universes.
  • Check the current store listing in your country before purchase; the cited PlayStation page confirms the format but does not establish every platform or edition currently sold worldwide.

Best three-character anime game: DRAGON BALL FighterZ

What the format gives you

Bandai Namco labels the central feature “3vs3 Tag/Support.” You select three fighters, rotate them during a match and use teammates to support the active character. That gives you more team-building decisions than a 2v2 game and makes character order, assists and matchup coverage part of learning the game.

The publisher describes the game as easy to learn but difficult to master. That is a useful distinction for a 2XKO player: basic access is intended to be approachable, while improving your team construction, neutral play and assists can provide a long practice curve. The recommendation here is for players who specifically want anime presentation and a full three-character team, not for anyone seeking a format identical to 2XKO.

  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers

  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

Modes and platforms

The official page lists ranked matches, an interactive lobby and six-player Party Match. Those modes cover competitive one-on-one sessions, social lobby play and larger group matches, although the source does not publish current queue times or player counts.

Bandai Namco lists PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The store section displays physical and digital edition choices. Availability can differ by platform, region, edition and retailer stock, so confirm that the version you intend to buy includes the features and characters you expect.

When it is the better pick than a 2v2 game

  • You prefer a three-fighter roster per team and the extra room for assists and substitutions.
  • You want a Dragon Ball presentation rather than a crossover roster.
  • You value ranked, lobby and Party Match options in one package.

Best cross-platform 3v3 option: Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid

Why cross-play is the selling point

The official Nintendo listing describes 3v3 tag battles with traditional fighting-game controls. The developer’s site describes cross-play and cross-progression across four console platforms and PC. That combination makes this the most direct recommendation for players whose friends are spread across different systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-progression means your progress can carry between supported platforms, while cross-play concerns who can play against whom. Neither claim tells you how many people are online at a given moment. The reviewed official pages do not establish current matchmaking population or average wait, so treat the features as compatibility advantages rather than a guarantee of instant games.

Rank #3
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Checks to make before buying

  1. Open the Nintendo listing or your platform’s current store page and confirm that the edition is sold in your region.
  2. Read the current developer information at the official site for supported platforms and account requirements.
  3. Confirm that everyone in your group is using a version covered by the current cross-play and cross-progression implementation.
  4. Do not infer queue speed from the existence of cross-play; population and wait-time data are not published in the cited material.

Best for learning fighting games, but not a tag replacement: Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

What it offers

Cygames presents Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising as a fighting and party game with simple inputs, story and arcade modes, training tools and an online lobby. Those tools make it a sensible place to practice fundamentals, learn a roster and become comfortable with fighting-game controls.

Its core combat is one-on-one. It therefore does not reproduce 2XKO’s tag-and-assist decision making, and it should not be presented as a substitute if controlling a team is your main requirement.

Release and platform details

The original platform release was December 14, 2023. Cygames lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Steam, and gives Nintendo Switch 2 a September 17, 2026 release date. Verify the platform page for your region because release timing, online access and edition contents can differ.

Who benefits most?

  • New players who want explicit training tools and simple inputs before tackling a team fighter.
  • Experienced players who want a one-on-one game alongside their tag title.
  • Players whose preferred system is PS5, PS4, Steam or Switch 2 and who do not require team combat.

A different team concept: MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Why it is not simply another 2v2 or 3v3

PlayStation’s June 2025 announcement identifies PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games as partners and describes a 4v4 team-versus design. A later feature explains that the game uses a shared team health bar, so you do not have to master every member of the team to contribute effectively. That is a fundamental design difference from conventional tag fighters: the team’s combined health and coordinated actions matter more than treating every character as an isolated life bar.

  • Story and Arcade Mode - Experience an all-new, original story outlined by show creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Tim Hedrick. Shape the fate of time and space in the main story mode, then dive into arcade runs featuring unique storylines for every playable character.
  • Robust Training Mode - A powerful Training Mode equips players of all skill levels with advanced tools, including hitboxes, frame data, save states and more.
  • Seamless Online Play - Battle players worldwide with rollback netcode and crossplay across multiple platforms. Ranked and Casual matches, lobbies, spectator mode, replays, and more ensure a competitive experience that feels great to play no matter where you are or who you’re fighting.

Director and lead battle designer Kazuto Sekine said, “From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,” in the official interview. The statement describes the intended audience, not a guarantee that every player will find the system easy.

Availability warning

The official pages establish a 2026 launch window for PS5, Steam and Epic. They do not establish a current, region-specific store listing in the material reviewed here. Check your local storefront and release status before treating it as an immediately playable purchase. The relevant announcements are PlayStation’s June 2025 announcement and the August 2025 4v4 feature.

How to choose the right alternative

1. Start with the team size you actually want

  • Two characters: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the closest structural match.
  • Three characters: DRAGON BALL FighterZ and Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid add another team slot and more assist possibilities.
  • Four characters: MARVEL Tōkon uses a distinct shared-health approach rather than simply scaling up a traditional tag formula.
  • No team: Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the choice for one-on-one practice.

2. Match the learning style

For an immediately familiar team framework, start with the 2v2 option. For a larger anime roster and a stated easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master design, choose FighterZ. For explicit simple inputs and training tools, choose Granblue even though it is one-on-one. If you are interested in experimenting with a shared team health bar, wait for Tōkon’s confirmed regional release rather than assuming its 4v4 label means conventional tags.

3. Check the platform before judging the game

2XKO’s currently listed platforms are PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. FighterZ has the broadest explicitly listed legacy-and-current console range in this comparison. Power Rangers’ developer claims coverage across four console platforms and PC, but the exact edition should be checked locally. Granblue’s current list includes PS5, PS4, Steam and Switch 2. Tōkon’s announcement names PS5, Steam and Epic for its 2026 launch window. BlazBlue’s cited page establishes the game and its format but does not provide a complete worldwide platform matrix, so verify before purchasing.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics - PlayStation PS4
  • Experience your Favorite MARVEL vs. CAPCOM classics All in One – Enjoy 7 of your favorite classic titles that helped shaped the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM universe both single player and online.
  • To enhance your playability experience, we incorporated the favorite added features from Capcom Fighting Collection including gallery mode, quick save, training mode for all fighting titles, and the high score challenge.
  • This collection also includes rollback net code for a smooth and enjoyable experience online. Play casually or competitively through casual, ranked, or custom matches using rules of your choosing!

4. Separate feature support from live-service reality

Cross-play, rollback, ranked modes and lobbies describe technical or feature support; they do not measure how many opponents are available. None of the reviewed official sources provides a comparable active-player statistic for these games. If matchmaking speed is decisive, check the platform’s current community activity and your region at the time you plan to play instead of relying on an uncited popularity ranking.

5. Choose the franchise and pace you will actually play

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is built around a multi-series crossover. FighterZ emphasizes Dragon Ball’s anime presentation. Battle for the Grid uses Power Rangers characters. Tōkon uses Marvel characters and a four-person team concept. Granblue offers a separate one-on-one setting. Mechanical similarity matters, but a roster you enjoy is often what determines whether you keep practicing.

Common mistakes when replacing 2XKO

Calling every team fighter a 2v2 game

FighterZ and Battle for the Grid are 3v3, not 2v2. Tōkon is 4v4, and Granblue is one-on-one. Use the format that matches your preferred amount of team management rather than treating all assist-based games as interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming cross-play guarantees busy matchmaking

Cross-play can enlarge the pool of compatible platforms, but no cited source supplies a current population or queue-time comparison. A feature list cannot promise an active lobby in your region.

Treating a launch window as a current release

Tōkon’s official material points to 2026, but a current regional store listing was not established. Confirm that the game is purchasable and playable where you live before recommending it as an immediate alternative.

Confusing fighting-game collections

Capcom’s announcement says all eight games in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 include online play with rollback netcode. That statement applies to that collection only. It does not establish the same feature set for a separate Marvel vs. Capcom collection or for any other title in this list.

Which game should you pick?

Pick BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle when the two-character structure is non-negotiable. Pick DRAGON BALL FighterZ for the deepest anime-oriented 3v3 alternative with ranked, lobby and Party Match modes. Pick Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid when official cross-play and cross-progression are your deciding features. Use Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising to build fighting-game fundamentals without team-management pressure. Consider MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls only after confirming its 2026 regional availability and accepting that its shared-health 4v4 design is intentionally different from 2XKO.
