His comments came as Sony was reported to be planning to stop producing PlayStation game discs in 2028. That reported date is a target, not confirmation that every existing disc or retail box will disappear at once.
What Shuhei Yoshida actually said
Yoshida made the comments in an interview at the Busan Indie Connect Festival, covered on August 18–19, 2026. The supplied reports identify him as a former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios. They do not identify him as Ken Kutaragi, so “Father of PlayStation” is headline framing rather than a verified description of the interviewee.

Yoshida described himself as a completely digital consumer: “But personally, I’m a totally digital consumer. I don’t want to manage discs or swap discs. I want all my games on my dashboard, and I just select a game and play it. So, I’m completely digital.”
His argument is practical rather than a published cost study. Developers continue to add patches, downloadable content and other data after a physical release. As a result, buying a disc does not necessarily mean receiving a complete, up-to-date game on the medium itself.

Is Sony really ending PlayStation game discs?
Reports say Sony is planning to stop producing PlayStation game discs from 2028. The available coverage does not provide a detailed transition schedule, a list of affected regions or a promise that all boxed products will end on the same day. Existing discs, previously manufactured stock and second-hand sales could therefore remain in circulation after production changes begin.
Sony chief financial officer Lin Tao was reported as saying the move would not have a negative business impact. However, the reports supplied for this article contain no audited cost breakdown, manufacturing figure or market-share statistic proving that physical games are universally uneconomic. “No economic sense” should be read as an industry position in an ongoing distribution debate, not as a quantified finding that applies identically to every game, market or player.
Why a disc may not be a complete game
Post-release patches
Games can ship with a version that is later corrected or improved through updates. A player installing from a disc may still need a substantial download before the game performs as intended or reaches the latest version.

- Feel your journey through the Norse realms, made possible by immersive haptic feedback and adaptive trigger functionality.
- Take advantage of multidirectional 3D Audio; hear enemies approaching from any direction. (3D audio with stereo headphones (analog or USB))
- Bask in the beautiful worlds you travel through, brought to life by precise art direction and arresting attention to detail.
- Switch between full 4K resolution at a targeted 30 frames per second, or dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps. (4K resolution requires a compatible 4K TV or display)
Downloadable content and extra data
Expansions, season content, languages, high-resolution assets and online features may be distributed separately. A disc can provide the base installation while the rest of the experience depends on a network connection and the publisher’s servers.
The convenience calculation
Digital libraries eliminate disc swapping, storage and the need to locate a particular case. Yoshida’s preferred workflow is selecting a title from the console dashboard and launching it. That convenience is especially significant for players who keep many games installed or switch between them frequently.
Digital and physical games: what changes for players
| Consideration | Physical release | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Access method | Insert the disc; updates or additional downloads may still be required. | Download and launch from the console library; an account and license govern access. |
| Convenience | Requires storing and swapping discs. | Games appear on the dashboard without handling media. |
| Resale and lending | A disc can generally be lent or resold, subject to the game’s practical requirements. | Usually tied to the purchasing account or license and not transferable like a disc. |
| Preservation | Provides a tangible copy, but patches, activation and server dependencies can limit its independence. | Depends on the storefront, account and continued download access. |
| Collecting | Includes a case, artwork and other physical memorabilia. | Offers no boxed object unless a separate collector package is sold. |
What happens to resale, lending and ownership?
Physical media supports a secondary market: owners can sell a disc, lend it to another person or keep it as a tangible record of purchase. Digital games generally function as account-bound licenses, so changing hands is not equivalent to handing over a disc. The practical value of that distinction depends on the platform’s terms and the game’s online requirements, but a digital library does not reproduce the ordinary used-game market.

Are physical games better for preservation?
A disc can remain usable when a digital storefront changes or a download is no longer listed, which is why preservationists value it. That advantage has limits. Some releases require online activation, mandatory patches, account checks or servers that may eventually be shut down. In those cases, the disc is evidence of ownership and a path to the original software, not necessarily a permanently self-contained copy.

Yoshida acknowledged collectors with “walls full of physical packages” and expected collector editions to continue. The likely change is what sits inside the box. A future collector product could include artwork, a steelbook, figurines, books or other memorabilia while supplying a download code instead of a game disc.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
That distinction separates two things often treated as one: physical packaging as a collectible and a disc as a complete, independently useful game copy. Collectors may still receive a substantial boxed product even if the playable software is delivered digitally.
What the 2028 report does—and does not—mean
- It indicates a reported Sony target to stop producing PlayStation game discs from 2028.
- It does not establish that every physical game already in circulation will stop working.
- It does not provide a universal cost per disc, a percentage of digital sales or another audited measure showing that physical production loses money in every case.
- It does not eliminate existing interests in resale, lending, preservation or collecting.
For players, the likely result is a gradual shift rather than an overnight deletion of physical games: fewer new discs, continued use of existing copies and more boxed editions whose software component is a code. The trade-off is straightforward. Digital delivery offers Yoshida’s preferred convenience and avoids treating a disc as a promise that all future content is already present. Physical media preserves a route to resale and collecting, but it cannot remove the modern game’s dependence on updates, downloads and online services.
