Choose LinuxGSM for a conventional Linux service managed from a shell, Open Factorio Server Manager for browser-based control of the server, saves, and mods, or factoriotools/factorio when Docker or Compose is already part of your workflow. Whichever tool you use, the official Factorio headless server remains the compatibility baseline: every connected instance must run exactly the same game version and mods.

The short answer: match the manager to your operating model

There is no universally best Factorio server manager. The right choice depends on where the server runs and how you prefer to operate it.

  • LinuxGSM: Best for a Linux VPS or home server administrator who is comfortable with shell commands, system services, scripted updates, and configuration files.
  • Open Factorio Server Manager: Best when several people need a browser interface to start and stop the server, handle saves, and install or remove mods.
  • factoriotools/factorio: Best for an operator already using Docker or Compose who wants persistent storage, restart policies, environment-variable configuration, and optional RCON automation.
  • Official headless command line: The fallback and compatibility reference. Third-party tools ultimately need to produce a launch that follows Factorio’s own command-line and version rules.

Choose one operating model and make it the source of truth. Mixing a web manager, hand-edited container settings, and ad-hoc shell launches against the same files is an easy way to start the wrong save or create a game/mod version mismatch.

What a Factorio manager actually has to control

A manager is more than a start button. A reliable setup coordinates four layers:

  1. The Factorio executable and game version. The server must launch the intended release or branch and expose the correct network ports.
  2. World data. Saves must live on storage that survives a process restart, host reboot, image replacement, or manager upgrade.
  3. Mods. The server’s installed mod set and versions must match every client and every other game instance joining it.
  4. Operations and recovery. You need a controlled stop, backups before risky changes, logs for diagnosis, and a way to automate administrative commands when required.

Factorio’s official multiplayer guidance is the hard compatibility rule: “All game instances need the installation of exactly the same game-versions and mods.” A manager can simplify downloading and selecting those files, but it cannot relax that requirement.

Tool comparison

Tool Operating model Lifecycle control Save and mod administration Version and update controls Backup and recovery ergonomics Automation Operator knowledge
LinuxGSM Linux service and shell workflow Service-oriented start, stop, and scripted maintenance Managed through the server’s files and configuration workflow Separate game-server configuration from start parameters; select a specific Factorio version branch Documentation explicitly advises backing up the server; you design the backup job Shell scripts and configured RCON settings Linux administration and command-line skills
Open Factorio Server Manager Browser interface running on or alongside the Factorio host Start and stop the Factorio binary from the UI Upload, download, and delete saves; manage installed mods Installation can be native or Docker and can point at an existing Factorio installation File operations are exposed in the UI, but you still need an independent backup plan UI-driven administration; the project description emphasizes management features rather than a specific automation API Lower shell burden, though installation and host security still matter
factoriotools/factorio Docker container, commonly with Compose Container start/stop and a documented --restart=unless-stopped policy Persistent /factorio volume; environment variables select saves and configure behavior Image and environment settings control updates; UPDATE_MODS_ON_START and UPDATE_IGNORE are documented Back up saves before replacing a container or upgrading the image Optional RCON and scripts that send commands to the running server Docker volumes, networking, image lifecycle, and file permissions
Official headless command line Direct process launched by your service or script Flags such as --start-server and --rcon-port Files and commands are your responsibility Direct control over the installed binary and mod credentials Entirely dependent on your scripts and storage plan Full shell and RCON control Highest manual administration burden

Multi-instance behavior is not established by the project descriptions summarized here. If you intend to run several worlds on one host, verify each tool’s current instance and port model before committing to it; every instance still needs an unambiguous save directory, port assignment, game version, and mod set.

LinuxGSM: the best fit for a Linux service workflow

Why choose it

LinuxGSM suits an administrator who thinks in services, configuration files, scheduled jobs, and shell-based troubleshooting. Its Factorio documentation separates the settings that define the game server from the parameters used to start the process. That separation makes it easier to change a launch option without accidentally rewriting the in-game configuration.

The documentation also describes selecting a specific version branch. Pinning a branch is useful when a stable world and its mods should not move to a new Factorio release during an unattended update.

What you configure

  • Game-server configuration: The world and server behavior that Factorio reads while running.
  • Start parameters: The command-line options LinuxGSM passes when it launches the binary.
  • Network settings: The Factorio game port and RCON settings documented for the server.
  • Release branch: The exact Factorio branch you intend to run rather than whichever build happens to be newest.

If you publish the server in Factorio’s public listing, LinuxGSM notes that Factorio credentials may be required. Treat those credentials as secrets and keep them out of world-readable configuration files and public repositories.

A safe LinuxGSM operating routine

  1. Prepare a Linux account and storage location dedicated to the server. Keep saves and configuration on persistent disk rather than temporary storage.
  2. Install LinuxGSM’s Factorio service according to its current documentation, then identify which file contains game-server settings and which contains start parameters.
  3. Set the intended Factorio branch before inviting players. Record the branch and mod versions in your administration notes.
  4. Configure the game port and, if needed, RCON settings. Do not expose RCON publicly unless your network design specifically requires it.
  5. Run a manual start and stop, inspect the service output, and confirm that the expected save is loaded before enabling unattended restarts or updates.
  6. Schedule or perform a backup before a Factorio version change, a large mod-set change, or any maintenance that replaces server files. LinuxGSM’s own documentation advises administrators to back up the server.

LinuxGSM trade-offs

Its strengths are transparency and control: a Linux administrator can inspect files, integrate the service with existing monitoring, and script repeatable operations. The trade-off is that LinuxGSM does not turn file ownership, firewall rules, backup retention, or secret storage into a graphical wizard. If the person maintaining the server is uncomfortable diagnosing a service from logs and a shell, a browser manager may be a better operational fit.

That combination addresses the tasks that commonly force a casual administrator onto the command line. A moderator can stop the process, put a replacement save in place, download a copy for safekeeping, or adjust the installed mod set from a browser instead of editing directories by hand.

Installation choices

The installation wiki documents both Docker and native installation routes. It also documents an option to point the manager at an existing Factorio installation. That is important if a world already runs successfully and you want to add a UI without rebuilding the underlying server immediately.

  1. Choose native installation or Docker based on the host you already operate; do not introduce containers solely for a cosmetic UI if you have no container maintenance plan.
  2. During setup, identify the existing Factorio installation and its save/mod directories, or create dedicated persistent directories for a new installation.
  3. Sign in to the manager locally first. Confirm that it can see the intended saves and installed mods before exposing the interface beyond your trusted network.
  4. Use the UI to stop the server before replacing a save or changing a substantial mod set. Download a copy of the current save before destructive file operations.
  5. Start the server from the manager and verify the loaded save, game version, and mod list with a test client.

Where a browser manager helps—and where it does not

A UI reduces the number of shell commands an occasional administrator must remember, but it does not remove host responsibilities. You still need persistent storage, operating-system updates, access control, firewall rules, and a backup destination that is independent of the server’s working directory. A browser action that deletes a save is still destructive; the interface is not a backup policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manager is also not a compatibility override. If a client has a different Factorio build or mod version, the connection can fail even though the manager successfully starts the process. Keep an explicit record of the game release and every mod version after each change.

factoriotools/factorio: a practical Docker and Compose foundation

Persistent storage and networking

The Docker project documents mounting a persistent host directory at /factorio. That volume is the boundary between disposable container instances and durable server data. If the container is removed and recreated while the volume remains intact, saves and configuration can survive the replacement.

The quick-start example maps the game’s documented default port, 34197/udp. The image also documents optional RCON on 27015/tcp. These are configuration defaults from the project example, not performance measurements; change them when another service or a multi-instance layout requires different ports.

Container lifecycle controls

Use the documented --restart=unless-stopped policy when you want Docker to bring the server back after a host reboot while still respecting an intentional stop. Inspect runtime output with docker logs when a launch fails, a save is not selected, or a mod update behaves unexpectedly.

Environment-driven configuration

The image documents environment variables for several recurring tasks:

  • UPDATE_MODS_ON_START controls whether mods are updated when the container starts.
  • UPDATE_IGNORE lets you exclude specified mods from that update behavior.
  • Save-selection and other server configuration variables allow the container definition to describe which world and settings should be used.

Keep those variables in a protected Compose environment file or secret-management system. A configuration file that contains an RCON password should not be committed to a public repository.

A safe container replacement sequence

  1. Stop the running container cleanly so Factorio finishes writing the save.
  2. Copy the relevant saves and configuration from the persistent host storage to a separate backup location. The project specifically recommends backing up saves before replacing a container or upgrading.
  3. Review the target image version and your environment variables, including save selection and mod-update settings.
  4. Recreate or upgrade the container while retaining the /factorio volume and the intended UDP port mapping.
  5. Read docker logs until the server reports a normal startup, then connect with a client that has exactly the same game and mod versions.
  6. If the new container does not load correctly, stop it and restore the backed-up data or previous image definition rather than repeatedly changing the live world.

Docker trade-offs

Docker gives you a reproducible declaration of ports, volumes, restart behavior, and environment settings. It also introduces container-specific failure modes: a missing volume mount can make a healthy-looking container appear to have lost its saves, and an incorrect file owner can prevent Factorio from writing. Operators must understand image replacement, volume retention, and network exposure before treating the setup as maintenance-free.

The official headless command line and RCON remain the compatibility baseline

Factorio’s official command-line reference documents headless operation, including --start-server for launching a dedicated world and --rcon-port for configuring RCON. It also documents the service credentials used when a headless server needs to download mods.

Use those official flags to audit a third-party manager. When a UI or container abstraction hides the launch command, verify that it still selects the intended save, game version, mod directory, network port, and RCON settings. The command line is also the escape hatch when a manager is unavailable: a service script can launch the same headless binary directly.

RCON automation

The Docker project describes using RCON to send commands to a running server, which enables scripted administration without attaching to the process’s terminal. RCON is an administrative control channel, not a player-facing service. Use a strong password, keep the port on a private network where possible, and avoid exposing the optional 27015/tcp endpoint to the public internet unless the design requires it.

Backups, updates, and mod changes: a procedure that avoids common disasters

Before a Factorio version update

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop new joins.
  2. Stop the server cleanly and wait for the process to exit.
  3. Copy every active save and the configuration that identifies the game branch, ports, and mods to storage outside the live directory or container volume.
  4. Record the current Factorio version and complete mod list, including versions.
  5. Apply the update through LinuxGSM, the manager’s installation, or the Docker image workflow you selected.
  6. Start with the previous save, inspect logs, and test a client before reopening the server.

Before changing a large mod set

Download a backup of the current save first. Change the mod set as one planned operation rather than accepting a series of unrecorded updates. If the world fails to load, restore the previous save and mod versions together; restoring only one side can create the same mismatch the change was meant to solve.

When a player cannot connect

  • Compare the client’s Factorio version with the server’s exact build.
  • Compare every installed mod and version, not just the mod names.
  • Confirm the client is using the correct game port and that the host firewall permits the Factorio UDP port.
  • Read the service output, manager log, or docker logs for the first error rather than the final disconnect message.
  • Check that a container recreation did not omit the persistent /factorio volume or select a different save.

Which tool should you choose?

Choose LinuxGSM if…

  • Your server is a Linux VPS or home machine and you already maintain services from a shell.
  • You want explicit branch selection, scriptable updates, and direct access to configuration files.
  • You can own the backup schedule, firewall, credentials, and recovery testing yourself.

Choose Open Factorio Server Manager if…

  • You need browser-based start/stop controls and routine save and mod file operations.
  • More than one trusted administrator will maintain the world and not all of them should edit shell configuration.
  • You want to attach a UI to an existing Factorio installation or choose between native and Docker deployment.

Choose factoriotools/factorio if…

  • Your host already uses Docker or Compose and you want the server described as a container configuration.
  • Persistent volumes, restart policies, environment variables, and docker logs fit your operating model.
  • You plan to use RCON for scripts or remote administration and understand container networking.

Use the official command line directly if…

  • You need the smallest possible dependency chain or are building your own service wrapper.
  • You are troubleshooting a manager and need to prove whether the underlying Factorio launch works.
  • You are prepared to implement save handling, backups, mod downloads, logging, and restarts yourself.

A final decision checklist

  • Can the chosen setup pin or clearly record the exact Factorio version?
  • Where do saves and configuration live when the process, container, or host is replaced?
  • How will you make and verify a backup before a version or mod change?
  • Can you inspect startup errors quickly through a service log, browser log, or docker logs?
  • Is RCON disabled when unnecessary, and protected when enabled?
  • Can every connected player obtain the same game and mod versions?
  • Who has permission to stop the server, delete saves, change mods, and access credentials?

For most Linux administrators, LinuxGSM is the cleanest service workflow. For teams that value an accessible control panel, Open Factorio Server Manager removes the most tedious file operations. For containerized infrastructure, factoriotools/factorio provides the most natural lifecycle and configuration model. In all three cases, disciplined version records, persistent storage, and backups matter more than the interface used to press Start.
