For most self-hosters, Gatus is the best Uptime Kuma alternative in 2026 when the priority is configuration-as-code and GitOps. Choose Statping-ng if a polished public status page and a database-backed deployment matter more. Move to Zabbix or Checkmk when you need to monitor hosts, networks, databases, and large fleets rather than only endpoints. Healthchecks.io is the better fit for missed cron jobs and scheduled tasks. If maintaining the monitoring server is the problem, hosted UptimeRobot or Better Stack removes that operational work at the cost of self-hosting control.

Uptime Kuma remains a capable endpoint monitor: it handles HTTP(S), TCP and ICMP ping checks, customizable status pages, and notifications through services such as Telegram, Slack, Discord and email. Its commonly cited limitations are less advanced alerting, no built-in observability, and weaker scaling and configuration automation than some alternatives. The right replacement therefore depends less on a feature checklist than on the failure you need to detect and who will maintain the monitoring system.

What Uptime Kuma does well—and where alternatives differ

Uptime Kuma is designed around a straightforward question: is this endpoint reachable and responding? You add monitors through a web interface, choose a protocol, define notification behavior, and optionally publish a status page. That workflow is attractive for a homelab, a small self-hosted service, or a handful of websites because the learning curve is modest and the result is visible immediately.

The same simplicity creates boundaries. A basic endpoint check can tell you that a URL, port, or host stopped answering, but it does not by itself explain CPU pressure, disk saturation, a failing database query, a broken background worker, or a scheduled backup that never ran. Uptime Kuma also has fewer advanced alerting and automation features than broader monitoring platforms, and its configuration is less naturally managed as code. Alternatives below separate those concerns instead of pretending that one product is optimal for every deployment.

Use the failure mode to choose the tool

  • Website or API reachability: choose a focused uptime monitor such as Gatus or Statping-ng.
  • Repository-managed monitor definitions: choose Gatus and keep YAML with the rest of your infrastructure code.
  • Public incident communication: choose Statping-ng, Kener or OnlyStatus when status-page presentation is central.
  • Hosts, switches, databases and fleet telemetry: evaluate Checkmk or Zabbix.
  • Missed cron jobs and scheduled pipelines: use Healthchecks.io.
  • No monitoring-server maintenance: consider hosted UptimeRobot or Better Stack.

Comparison of the leading Uptime Kuma alternatives

The table summarizes the practical distinctions that matter during selection. “Self-hosted” means you operate the application, its storage and its upgrades; hosted services trade that control for less maintenance.

Tool Best fit Configuration model Monitoring scope Main trade-off
Gatus YAML-defined checks and GitOps workflows Configuration as code Focused endpoint and service checks Less suitable as an all-in-one infrastructure suite
Statping-ng Public status pages with persistent application data Web interface backed by a database Endpoint status and public communication Narrower scope than full infrastructure platforms
Kener Modern self-hosted status pages and synthetic checks Self-hosted status-page workflow Status presentation and synthetic monitoring Smaller ecosystem and breadth than major infrastructure suites
OnlyStatus Modern self-hosted status pages and synthetic checks Self-hosted status-page workflow Status presentation and synthetic monitoring Smaller ecosystem and breadth than major infrastructure suites
HertzBeat Multi-protocol monitoring with observability features Broader monitoring platform Multiple protocols plus observability More operational scope and complexity than a simple uptime checker
Checkmk Large fleets and deep plugin-based monitoring Platform and plugin-driven administration Hosts, networks and broad infrastructure Heavier setup and administration
Zabbix Enterprise-scale servers, networks and databases Centralized enterprise monitoring configuration Infrastructure, network and database telemetry Steeper learning curve and more involved configuration
Healthchecks.io Cron and heartbeat monitoring Heartbeat endpoints and schedules Scheduled jobs and recurring tasks Not a complete website-uptime replacement
UptimeRobot Hosted, low-maintenance uptime monitoring Hosted web service Endpoint uptime and status pages Gives up self-hosting control and adds vendor dependence
Better Stack Hosted uptime with logs and incident response Hosted platform Uptime, logs and incident workflows Paid tiers and broader platform complexity

1. Gatus: the best configuration-as-code alternative

Gatus is the strongest default choice when your monitors should live in a repository. Instead of treating the dashboard as the source of truth, you define checks in YAML, review changes, and deploy the configuration through the same workflow used for other infrastructure. That is especially useful when several people need to understand why a monitor exists, when a change needs approval, or when a new environment should inherit a known set of checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Gatus is a good fit

  • You want monitor definitions reviewed in pull requests.
  • You prefer reproducible environments over clicking through a dashboard.
  • You need endpoint checks but not a complete host and network observability suite.
  • You want a focused service that can be rebuilt from configuration after a failure.

What to plan for

Configuration-as-code changes the operating model. Your team must decide where secrets belong, how YAML changes are validated, and how a deployment failure is detected. A repository also becomes part of the monitoring control plane, so protect it with normal access controls and keep a tested copy of the configuration. Gatus is less suitable when your requirement has expanded into broad infrastructure inventory, deep plugin coverage, or centralized fleet analytics; that is the point at which Checkmk or Zabbix deserves evaluation.

Migration approach from Uptime Kuma

  1. Export or manually inventory every Uptime Kuma monitor, including protocol, target, expected response and notification destination.
  2. Classify each check as an external endpoint, an internal service, or a job heartbeat. Do not force scheduled jobs into an endpoint monitor.
  3. Represent the endpoint checks in Gatus YAML and review the definitions before deploying them.
  4. Run both systems during a transition window so a configuration mistake does not create a blind spot.
  5. After alerts match your expectations, retire duplicate monitors and document the repository as the authoritative configuration.

2. Statping-ng: database-backed status pages

Statping-ng is a natural choice when the public status page is as important as the check itself. Its database-backed deployment gives the status application persistent storage for service information and history, rather than treating the page as a disposable view. That distinction matters for a project that needs a stable incident page, a recognizable presentation for users, and an application state that survives routine restarts.

Choose Statping-ng when presentation is central

Use it for a small product, community service or self-hosted application where visitors need a clear view of operational state. It remains narrower than an infrastructure platform: a status page can show that a service is unavailable, but it does not replace host metrics, network discovery or database telemetry. Pair it with deeper monitoring when the operations team needs to diagnose the cause rather than only communicate the symptom.

Storage and maintenance implications

A database-backed design introduces a storage responsibility that a very small single-purpose monitor may avoid. Include the database and application data in your backup plan, test restoration, and decide how upgrades will be performed before exposing the page publicly. If you only need repository-managed checks and do not need a polished public page, Gatus may be the simpler operating model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Kener and OnlyStatus: modern self-hosted status pages

Kener and OnlyStatus target teams that want a modern self-hosted status-page experience with synthetic checks. They sit between a minimal endpoint checker and a large infrastructure suite: the public-facing experience and service checks are primary, while fleet-wide telemetry is not their purpose.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

When to consider them

  • Your main audience is users who need a clean service-status page.
  • You want synthetic checks that represent real user-facing paths.
  • You are comfortable accepting a smaller ecosystem than established infrastructure platforms.

Questions to answer before adoption

Confirm how each project handles persistence, notifications, access control, and upgrades in your deployment model. The defining trade-off is breadth: these tools can be attractive for a focused status page, but they are not substitutes for the host, network and database coverage offered by Checkmk or Zabbix. Treat them as status-oriented alternatives rather than universal replacements.

4. HertzBeat: broader protocols and observability

HertzBeat expands beyond a simple reachability test with multi-protocol monitoring and observability features. It is appropriate when your environment contains several kinds of services and the team wants one monitoring system to cover more than HTTP endpoints.

Why its scope matters

A broader protocol model can reduce the number of separate tools you operate, but it also increases the amount of configuration, storage and troubleshooting knowledge required. Decide whether the additional coverage answers a current operational problem. If your only requirement is to know whether a website responds, HertzBeat may add unnecessary complexity; if you are already collecting multiple service signals, its wider scope can be more coherent than maintaining several narrow checkers.

Adoption checklist

  • List the protocols and service types you need to monitor today, not only those you might add later.
  • Define retention and access requirements for the observability data.
  • Assign ownership for upgrades, alert tuning and capacity planning.
  • Keep a simpler external check for critical public endpoints if the monitoring platform itself is hosted in the same failure domain.

5. Checkmk: fleet monitoring with plugins

Checkmk is designed for organizations that have outgrown endpoint-only monitoring. Its plugin-based approach supports deep monitoring across large fleets, making it a candidate for servers, network devices and other infrastructure where discovery and detailed checks matter more than a small status dashboard.

When Checkmk is the right step up

Choose it when operators need a broad inventory, repeatable checks across many systems, and plugin coverage that can be applied consistently. The benefit is depth and scale; the cost is a heavier setup and administration burden. Teams moving from Uptime Kuma should plan an explicit ownership model, because adding many checks without alert policy and escalation rules can create noise rather than visibility.

Do not use Checkmk merely to replace a status page

If the requirement is a public page for a few websites, a focused tool is easier to maintain and easier for non-technical users to understand. Checkmk becomes justified when the monitoring question is “what is happening across the fleet?” rather than “is this endpoint available?”

6. Zabbix: enterprise servers, networks and databases

Zabbix is the enterprise-scale option in this list. It is suited to organizations that need monitoring for servers, networks and databases with a centralized system and detailed operational controls.

Strengths

  • Broad infrastructure scope beyond endpoint uptime.
  • Suitable for large environments where many monitored objects share policies.
  • Useful when database and network monitoring are first-class requirements.

Costs in time and complexity

Zabbix has a steeper learning curve and more involved configuration than a lightweight uptime checker. Budget time for designing templates, permissions, alert thresholds and escalation paths. A migration is successful only when the team can explain which signal triggers which action; importing hundreds of checks without that discipline produces an expensive stream of low-value notifications.

7. Healthchecks.io: the right answer for cron and scheduled jobs

Healthchecks.io solves a different failure mode: a job that should run but silently does not. A heartbeat is sent when a scheduled task starts or completes; the absence of that heartbeat becomes the alert. This catches missed backups, stalled imports, failed reports and other recurring work that an HTTP monitor cannot reliably observe.

Why it is not a full Uptime Kuma replacement

Healthchecks.io is not intended to be a complete website-uptime monitor. It does not replace checks for a public URL, TCP service or host reachability. If your environment has both public endpoints and scheduled jobs, use the appropriate check type for each rather than trying to encode a cron failure as a web request.

Migration pattern

  1. List every scheduled task whose absence would matter, including backups and data pipelines.
  2. Add a heartbeat call at the point that proves the job completed successfully, not merely when it started.
  3. Set an expected schedule and grace period that accounts for normal runtime variation.
  4. Test by intentionally suppressing one heartbeat and confirming that the alert reaches the intended recipient.

8. Hosted UptimeRobot: less maintenance, less control

Hosted UptimeRobot is an option when the monitoring service should not run on infrastructure you maintain. The service handles the monitoring application, so you avoid patching and backing up a self-hosted instance. The trade-off is control: monitor data, availability and feature access depend on a vendor and its plan terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-plan figure and its qualification

UptimeRobot’s comparison materials state that its free plan includes 50 monitors, five-minute checks and a public status page. Plan limits are volatile, so confirm the current terms for your region and account before relying on those figures in a production design. Treat the allowance as a plan feature, not as a permanent guarantee.

When hosted monitoring is rational

  • Your self-hosted monitoring server fails in the same location as the services it watches.
  • No one on the team can own upgrades, backups and alert delivery.
  • You prefer predictable service access over keeping all monitoring data under your control.

9. Better Stack: hosted uptime, logs and incident response

Better Stack combines hosted uptime monitoring with logs and incident-response capabilities. It is relevant when the team wants to move from “the endpoint is down” to a hosted workflow that also helps investigate and coordinate an incident.

What you gain

Keeping uptime, logs and incident response in one hosted platform can reduce the number of integrations an operations team maintains. It is broader than a simple checker, which can be useful once incidents require context, timelines and collaboration rather than a single notification.

What to evaluate

Paid tiers and broader platform complexity are the principal trade-offs. Establish which users need access, how long logs must be retained, and whether the incident workflow justifies the additional service scope. For a small self-hosted project that only needs a public status page, a focused self-hosted alternative may remain easier to operate.

How to choose among the alternatives

1. Decide where the monitor runs

Self-hosting preserves control and can keep data inside your environment, but you own deployment, upgrades, storage and recovery. Hosted monitoring reduces that work and can observe your infrastructure from outside its failure domain, but introduces vendor dependence and plan constraints. Write down which risk matters more before comparing feature lists.

2. Choose the configuration model

Use Gatus when YAML and GitOps are requirements. Choose a UI-centered status-page product when operators need to edit services without changing a repository. For enterprise platforms, expect a more involved configuration model and assign trained administrators.

3. Define the monitoring boundary

Endpoint-only monitoring answers availability questions. Host, network and database monitoring answers capacity and component-health questions. Scheduled-job monitoring answers “did the work happen?” These are different signals; selecting the narrowest tool that answers the actual question reduces cost and alert noise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Specify the public status requirement

A private operations dashboard and a public incident page have different audiences. Statping-ng, Kener and OnlyStatus emphasize status presentation. UptimeRobot and other hosted services can also provide a public page, while Checkmk and Zabbix are primarily infrastructure platforms.

5. Plan storage and scale

Ask where monitor definitions, history and incidents are stored, how they are backed up, and what happens when the monitoring service is unavailable. A database-backed application such as Statping-ng has different recovery work from a repository-defined Gatus deployment. Larger platforms require explicit retention and capacity planning.

6. Count the operational burden

Every additional protocol, plugin, dashboard and escalation rule creates maintenance work. Prefer the smallest system that meets the requirement, then add specialized coverage for gaps such as cron heartbeats or database telemetry.

A practical migration plan from Uptime Kuma

  1. Inventory the current estate. Record every monitor, protocol, target, expected response, notification route and owner. Include disabled checks so you know whether they are obsolete or merely paused.
  2. Separate symptoms from causes. Mark checks that only prove reachability and identify services that also need host, network, database or log signals.
  3. Group by destination. Put YAML-suitable endpoint checks in the Gatus candidate set, public-facing services in the status-page candidate set, fleet checks in the Checkmk or Zabbix set, and scheduled work in the Healthchecks.io set.
  4. Design alert policy before migration. Define warning and critical conditions, notification recipients, maintenance windows and escalation. Copying noisy alerts into a new platform does not improve reliability.
  5. Deploy in parallel. Keep Uptime Kuma active while the replacement produces equivalent notifications. Compare false positives, missed events and recovery messages during normal and deliberately induced failures.
  6. Test the monitor’s own failure modes. Stop the monitoring process, remove network access, fill its storage in a safe test environment, and restore from backup. A monitor that cannot recover is a new operational dependency.
  7. Cut over deliberately. Choose a maintenance window, announce the change to alert recipients, switch ownership to the new system, and keep the old configuration archived for rollback.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Monitoring only from inside the same network

An internal check can remain green while an external user cannot reach the service. Add an observation point outside the failure domain when public availability matters, or use a hosted monitor for that specific signal.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Confusing a successful HTTP response with a healthy application

A web server can return a generic success page while a database, queue or background worker is broken. Add checks that exercise the important dependency, then use infrastructure monitoring when you need resource-level evidence.

Putting every check in one product

One platform can be convenient, but forcing cron jobs, public status pages and fleet telemetry into a single tool often creates awkward configuration and excessive administration. A small combination of focused tools can be easier to reason about.

Ignoring the monitoring system’s own availability

Back up definitions and data, document credentials and test restoration. If the monitor shares power, networking or storage with the service it watches, consider an independent external check for the monitor itself.

Choosing on plan limits that may change

Hosted allowances, check intervals and retention terms can change. Record the plan and date used for the decision, then re-check current limits before a renewal or a major expansion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which alternative should you choose?

Choose Gatus for a self-hosted, repository-managed set of endpoint checks. Choose Statping-ng when a database-backed public status page is the center of the project. Choose Kener or OnlyStatus for a modern self-hosted status-page and synthetic-check experience, accepting a smaller ecosystem. Choose HertzBeat when multi-protocol monitoring and observability justify more operational scope. Choose Checkmk for large fleets and plugin-based depth. Choose Zabbix for enterprise server, network and database monitoring. Choose Healthchecks.io for missed cron and scheduled-job heartbeats. Choose UptimeRobot when hosted, low-maintenance endpoint monitoring is more valuable than self-hosting control. Choose Better Stack when hosted uptime needs to sit alongside logs and incident response.
