A 4 GB VPS is estimated by one provider guide to handle about five to ten low-to-medium-traffic WordPress sites when Redis object caching is used. That is a vendor estimate, not a benchmark; RAM consumed by PHP workers and the database is normally the first constraint.

The architecture that keeps sites independent
Think of the VPS as a small server room, not as one giant WordPress installation. Each site should have a complete tenant boundary. A compromised plugin on one site should not automatically be able to read another site’s files or database.

Do not put all sites in one shared directory under one runtime user. That arrangement is easier to create, but it removes the isolation that makes a multi-site VPS safer to operate. Isolation reduces the blast radius of a compromised plugin; it does not replace updates, backups, a firewall or least-privilege administration.

How many WordPress sites can one VPS run?
There is no universal site count. Traffic pattern, plugins, cron jobs, image processing, email activity and database size matter more than the number of domains. A mostly static brochure site may use little memory, while a busy store, forum or game-community site can consume many PHP workers and database connections.
A vendor guide estimates five to ten low-to-medium-traffic sites on a 4 GB KVM VPS with Redis object caching. Treat that as a planning starting point, not a promise. Leave memory for the operating system, MariaDB, PHP-FPM, Nginx, Redis, backups and short traffic spikes. RAM, rather than CPU, is usually the first limit on this class of VPS.

Measure before adding another site
- Watch total memory and swap during normal traffic and scheduled jobs.
- Check how many PHP-FPM workers each pool has created and whether requests queue.
- Observe MariaDB memory, slow queries and the number of active connections.
- Test a backup while the sites are serving traffic; backup jobs also consume disk and CPU.
- Record disk use for uploads, backups, logs and database binary logs, not just the WordPress directories.
When memory remains consistently high, reduce per-site worker limits, disable wasteful scheduled tasks, add caching or move to a larger VPS. Do not solve memory pressure by allowing every pool to create unlimited workers.
Version and platform prerequisites
One current deployment guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Nginx, MariaDB and PHP 8.3 with the WordPress extensions. WordPress’s requirements page currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer and MariaDB 10.11 or newer, or MySQL 8.0 or newer. HTTPS is required for every installation.
Version requirements change. Recheck the WordPress requirements page, your chosen Ubuntu LTS release, PHP-FPM packages, MariaDB and Certbot immediately before deployment. Older advice that treats PHP 7.4 or MySQL 5.7 as current describes end-of-life software and should not be used for a new server.
Prepare these items first
- A VPS with a static IPv4 address (and IPv6 if you intend to publish it).
- Root or sudo access and a basic recovery console supplied by the VPS host.
- One registered domain for each site, with permission to edit its DNS records.
- A written inventory of site names, Linux users, database names, PHP sockets and backup destinations.
- Strong, unique passwords for every database user and administrator account.
- An off-server backup target. A second directory on the same VPS is not a disaster-recovery backup.
Separate installs or WordPress Multisite?
Use separate WordPress installs for independent client sites, unrelated projects or sites that may be sold, migrated or restored individually. Each install gets its own wp-config.php, plugins, themes, updates and database.

It creates shared failure points: a network-level change, incompatible plugin or database problem can affect every site. Migrations and per-site handoffs are also more involved. Choose it because the sites are one network, not simply because it saves a few directories.

Build the VPS in a safe order
1. Point DNS and document the plan
List each production hostname, its apex domain and any www alias. Create A records pointing to the VPS address and AAAA records only when IPv6 is configured and reachable. Lowering DNS TTL before a migration can shorten the eventual cutover, but do not issue certificates until the names resolve to this server.
2. Install the base stack
Update the operating system, then install Nginx, MariaDB, PHP-FPM and the extensions WordPress commonly needs, including the MySQL driver, XML, curl, ZIP, GD or Imagick, mbstring and internationalization support. Enable the services at boot and remove packages you will not maintain. Use the PHP version supported by the current WordPress requirements and by your plugins.
Package names differ by Ubuntu release. Confirm the installed binary and service names before copying a command into production. A typical verification sequence is:

3. Create an account and root for each site
For the example domain site-one.example, create a normal system user and a private directory:
adduser --system --group --home /var/www/site-one.example siteone
mkdir -p /var/www/site-one.example
chown -R siteone:siteone /var/www/site-one.example
chmod 750 /var/www/site-one.exampleRepeat with a different user and path for every domain. Keep the web root owned by that site’s user; do not make it universally writable. If your deployment process needs a release directory, grant only the deployment account the minimum additional permission.
4. Create a database and least-privilege user
Log in to MariaDB as an administrator and create a database and account that belong only to the first site:

5. Give the site its own PHP-FPM pool
Create a pool file for the site, such as /etc/php/8.3/fpm/pool.d/siteone.conf:

pm.max_requests = 500The worker count is a starting example, not a universal setting. A site with heavy PHP requests may need more; a small site may need fewer. Size the sum of all pools against available RAM, then reload PHP-FPM and verify that the socket exists. Separate pools also let you run different PHP versions when your distribution provides them—for example, one pool can use a PHP 8.1 socket while another uses PHP 8.4—provided every version remains supported by WordPress and your plugins.
6. Add one Nginx server block per domain
Create a file such as /etc/nginx/sites-available/site-one.example and enable it with a symlink:

systemctl reload nginxUse a unique server_name, root and PHP socket in every block. The try_files rule is what lets WordPress handle friendly permalinks. Test the configuration before every reload; a failed syntax test should stop the deployment rather than take every site offline.
7. Install WordPress in that root
Download the current WordPress package from its official source, extract it into the site’s document root and ensure the site user owns the files. Create wp-config.php with the database name, database user, password and host localhost. Generate fresh authentication salts for each install; never copy salts from another site.
Open the domain in a browser and complete the installer. If you prefer a command-line deployment, use a maintained WP-CLI package and run it as the site user, not as root. Disable direct editing of plugin and theme files in production after confirming your update process works.

8. Issue HTTPS certificates
After DNS resolves and Nginx serves the correct site, install Certbot and its Nginx plugin. Run one request per domain, including the aliases that should answer:

Confirm that HTTP redirects to HTTPS, the certificate name matches the requested hostnames and an automated renewal timer is active. HTTPS is not optional for WordPress; it protects administrator sessions and is a stated requirement for every install.
Let’s Encrypt limits you must plan around
Let’s Encrypt documents a limit of 50 certificates per registered domain in any seven-day period, shared across all accounts. It also limits certificates containing the exact same set of identifiers to five in seven days. The registered-domain allowance refills at one certificate every 202 minutes.
These limits matter when many subdomains share one registered domain or when a script repeatedly creates and deletes certificates during testing. Use staging certificates while developing, request one certificate containing the stable names you actually need, and avoid unnecessary reissues. The official documentation allows override requests in some circumstances; do not assume a platform-specific article that says limits cannot be changed is universally correct. The available excerpt does not establish whether every renewal is exempt, so plan conservatively.
Backups, updates and security boundaries
Back up each site independently
- Export each database separately and retain several dated copies.
- Back up each site’s
wp-content, especially uploads, themes and custom plugins. - Keep at least one encrypted copy outside the VPS.
- Record the matching database credentials and PHP version with the backup.
- Perform a test restore to a temporary hostname; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Patch in a controlled order
Apply operating-system, PHP, MariaDB, Nginx, WordPress, theme and plugin updates regularly. Update one low-risk site first, check the front end, login, forms, scheduled jobs and media uploads, then continue. Separate pools make it easier to disable one site’s PHP process or roll back its files without stopping the others.
Restrict access
Use SSH keys, disable password login where practical, limit SSH to trusted addresses, enable a host firewall and expose only the ports you need. Keep MariaDB bound to local access unless a documented remote connection is required. Monitor authentication logs, Nginx errors, disk usage and unusual PHP process growth.
Troubleshooting by symptom
502 Bad Gateway
Check that PHP-FPM is running, the socket path in Nginx exactly matches the pool’s listen value and the Nginx worker can access the socket. Then inspect the PHP-FPM journal and reload after correcting the pool file.

The wrong site appears
Verify the DNS record, the request’s Host header, the exact server_name values and which sites are enabled. A default server block or duplicate hostname commonly catches the request before the intended block.

WordPress reports “Error establishing a database connection”
Compare the site’s wp-config.php values with the database name and user grants. Confirm that the account is permitted from localhost, MariaDB is running and the database exists. Do not solve the problem by granting the account access to every database.
Permalinks return 404
Confirm the Nginx try_files rule, reload Nginx after testing the configuration and resave WordPress permalinks once the site is reachable over HTTPS.
Only one site becomes slow
Inspect that site’s PHP-FPM worker count, slow database queries, cron jobs, plugins and access logs. A dedicated pool lets you cap its workers without giving every other site the same limit. If the VPS is swapping, reduce concurrency or add RAM before increasing limits.
When to move beyond one VPS
Separate users and pools reduce cross-site risk, but all sites still share the VPS kernel, storage, network link and power state. Plan a second server or managed database when one site’s traffic regularly exhausts memory, when uptime requirements differ substantially, when you need maintenance without a common outage, or when regulatory or client contracts require stronger tenancy boundaries.
For a small portfolio, the single-VPS design is a practical compromise: centralized patching and monitoring with per-site files, processes, credentials and certificates. Keep the inventory current, measure RAM rather than guessing from domain count, and recheck WordPress and certificate requirements whenever you add a new site.
