For most organized co-op or dedicated servers, XPortal Networks is the best starting point. It replaces portal-tag matching with a destination selector and gives administrators public, personal, private and custom named networks. Choose TeleportEverything instead when the important question is what may pass through a portal—ores, ingots, carts, allies or even nearby creatures. Choose TheGreatestPortal when you want a simple, compact directory of every portal with minimal policy.
All three change multiplayer travel in different ways. Your choice should follow the server’s priorities: administration and routing, transport rules, or the smallest possible change to the vanilla experience.

These are not three versions of the same design. XPortal Networks is a routing and governance system, TeleportEverything is a transport-rules system, and TheGreatestPortal is a directory. Installing the wrong type can leave a group with more administration than it wanted or with too little control over progression.
What a portal mod changes on a multiplayer server
Vanilla Valheim portals connect by matching tags. That works for a small world, but a long-running server can accumulate dozens of portals, duplicated names and abandoned links. A mod can address one or more of four separate problems:

- Finding destinations: replace memorized tags with a menu or directory.
- Organizing access: separate public travel from personal or private routes.
- Changing cargo rules: decide whether ores, ingots, carts or creatures can cross.
- Controlling progression: add fees, limit destruction or keep administrators in charge of settings.
In multiplayer, installation is also a synchronization problem. The server and clients must load compatible mod files and configuration. A portal that appears correctly for one player but not another is usually a deployment or version mismatch, not a destination-selection bug.
XPortal Networks: the strongest choice for organized travel
How its routing model works
XPortal Networks replaces the need to create matching tag pairs. Its destination-selection interface can expose a global network, a personal network, private portals and administrator-defined named networks. A player chooses a destination from the network to which the portal belongs rather than guessing which tag another player used.

Public routes can remain discoverable, while personal or private routes stay out of the general list.
Administration and permissions
The server owner can define up to 15 custom networks. Each custom network is identified by an ID from 1 through 15 and is declared in xportal_networks.json. The mod documents live reloading of these definitions, so an administrator can adjust network assignments without rebuilding every portal. Test a change with a second player before applying a large reorganization.
For worlds where portals are valuable infrastructure, XPortal Networks can limit destruction to the portal creator or administrators. That prevents a visitor from dismantling a shared route and also gives factions a way to protect their own links. Decide whether the restriction should apply to every network or only to public infrastructure before announcing the server rules.

Settings that affect progression
- Default destinations: preselect or expose a preferred destination so new players are not confronted with an empty list.
- Uncapped portal names: allow longer naming conventions when a large server needs names that include region, faction or function.
- Optional doubled portal costs: increase the cost of portal use when instant travel is making roads, ships or local logistics irrelevant.
- Server-enforced settings: keep clients from quietly changing the rules that the server owner intended.
Because these options affect both convenience and world progression, publish the chosen policy with the server’s mod list. A player should know whether a portal is public, private, expensive or protected before building an important route.

Choose XPortal Networks when the hard part is managing many destinations and many players. It is the best fit for a persistent dedicated server with shared bases, factions, events or an administrator who wants a predictable travel policy. It is less appropriate if the only goal is to let metal pass through an otherwise vanilla portal system; TeleportEverything addresses that narrower question directly.
TeleportEverything: choose what can pass through
Transport modes
TeleportEverything focuses on the cargo and entities that vanilla portals restrict. Its documented options cover allies, ores, ingots and carts, with optional behavior for enemies. That lets a server decide whether portal travel should remain a convenience for players only or become a complete logistics network.
The mod documents three broad behavior choices:
- Standard vanilla behavior: retain the usual restrictions while using the mod’s other controls.
- Vikings don’t run: block portal use when enemies are nearby. This preserves the danger of being chased and prevents a player from escaping every encounter through the nearest portal.
- Take them with you: allow nearby enemies to follow through. This can support deliberate challenge scenarios, but it can also bring a hostile encounter into a defended base.
Carts and configurable transport fees add further balance levers. If ores and ingots can pass freely, a server may want a fee or a rule that still requires players to move heavy cargo locally. If carts can pass, test the route at both ends so terrain, portal placement and arrival space do not create accidental traps.
Server and client placement
The author recommends installing TeleportEverything on both the dedicated server and every client. The server owner controls server-synchronized settings, so individual players should not assume that changing a local configuration changes the world’s rules. Record the server’s selected mode and fees in the welcome message or rules channel.

When to choose it
Choose TeleportEverything when the group’s debate is about progression and logistics: “Can we teleport silver?” “Can a cart come through?” or “Should enemies be able to follow?” It offers broader transport-rule changes than the other two choices, but that flexibility requires a clear policy. Without one, players may disagree about whether a newly enabled cargo type is a convenience or a major progression shortcut.
TheGreatestPortal: a compact destination directory
One portal, many destinations
TheGreatestPortal takes the simplest approach. A single portal presents a list of portals built around the world. Instead of constructing a large portal room with a separate entrance and tag for every destination, a base can place one directory portal and select the required route from its list.
This design is useful for a small group that wants less building and less memorization but does not need custom permissions, cargo rules or a large network taxonomy. It also suits a central hub where the visual clutter of many portal frames would be a problem.
Trade-offs
- Less administration: there are fewer network-policy decisions than with XPortal Networks.
- Less granular governance: the directory concept does not provide the same documented public, personal, private and 15-network structure.
- Minimal balance change: it primarily changes destination selection, so it is not the choice for ore, cart or enemy-transport rules.
Multiplayer installation and compatibility
Required foundation
BepInEx is the base loader for this Valheim mod ecosystem. BepInEx belongs on the server and every client, and gameplay mods generally need matching versions. XPortal Networks additionally lists BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn as prerequisites. Install those dependencies before the portal mod itself and keep the same release family across the server and players.

Deployment checklist
- Choose one portal design. Decide whether the server needs routing, transport rules or a simple directory. Avoid installing overlapping portal systems until you have confirmed that their interfaces and hooks are compatible.
- Freeze a version set. Record the Valheim build, BepInEx version, required libraries and portal-mod version. The exact current versions are not established here, so take them from the mod’s release page at deployment time rather than copying an old number.
- Install the loader and dependencies. Put BepInEx on the dedicated server and every player installation. Add BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn for XPortal Networks.
- Install the portal plugin in both locations. XPortal Networks documents server-and-client installation for synchronization; TeleportEverything’s author recommends the same arrangement. Follow the selected mod’s current package instructions for TheGreatestPortal.
- Start a test world or a maintenance window. Build two or three portals, use every destination type you plan to enable, and verify that a second player sees the same list and reaches the intended location.
- Set server policy. For XPortal Networks, edit
xportal_networks.jsonwith network IDs 1–15 and test its live reload. For TeleportEverything, select the cargo, enemy and fee behavior on the server. - Publish the client requirement. Give players the exact mod files and dependencies, not just the name of the portal mod. A client that lacks the loader or has a different version can fail before the portal menu opens.
Crossplay is a hard compatibility boundary
Current hosting documentation reports that BepInEx-based modded Valheim servers must run with crossplay=false. That excludes PlayFab crossplay users, including console players, from that server configuration. Treat this as an operational limitation rather than a minor setting: a PC-only modded server and a cross-platform vanilla server are different deployment choices.

Before installing a portal mod, confirm which players must join. If console or other PlayFab crossplay users are essential, do not promise that a BepInEx portal mod will work for them. Re-check this behavior after major Valheim updates because loader, server and crossplay support can change.

Configuration playbooks for common servers
Shared cooperative base
Use XPortal Networks with a global network for the main settlement and personal networks for private builds. Name custom networks by function rather than by player nickname—for example, a resource region, an event area or a faction zone—and document the IDs in the server rules. Protect the central portals from removal if newcomers are allowed to build nearby.
Faction or role-play server
Use XPortal Networks’ private and custom named networks to separate faction infrastructure from public roads. Give administrators responsibility for network definitions and use the creator/admin destruction limit where sabotage would undermine the scenario. If instant travel weakens the intended economy, enable doubled portal costs and explain that choice before the season starts.
Progression-focused co-op
Start with TeleportEverything in standard vanilla behavior. During testing, decide separately whether ores, ingots and carts should travel. If the group wants a harsh world, use the mode that blocks portals while enemies are nearby. If the group deliberately wants mobile encounters, test the enemy-following mode in a disposable base before enabling it on the main world.
Small server with limited building space
Use TheGreatestPortal when the main complaint is the size of a portal room. Place one directory portal in a safe, well-lit location with enough arrival space. It reduces construction without requiring the administrator to design a network hierarchy.

Common failures and how to diagnose them
A player sees vanilla behavior
Confirm that BepInEx and the portal plugin are installed on that client, then compare the client’s plugin version with the server’s recorded version. If the server enforces settings, changing a local configuration will not override it. Have the player restart after replacing files so the loader reads the new installation.
The portal list is empty or incomplete
Check that the destination portals were created after the plugin loaded and that they belong to the expected XPortal network. For custom networks, validate the ID in xportal_networks.json, save the file in the documented location and use the mod’s live-reload procedure. Test with an administrator account and a normal player account; a permission problem can look like a missing destination.
Players cannot join after mod installation
Check the crossplay setting first. A BepInEx server configured with crossplay=false will not accept PlayFab crossplay users. For PC players, compare the complete dependency set rather than only the portal plugin: BepInEx, BepInExPack Valheim and Jötunn must be present where the selected mod requires them.
Travel is too powerful or too disruptive
With XPortal Networks, consider doubled portal costs, stricter network separation or creator/admin-only destruction. With TeleportEverything, remove cargo types one at a time, restore standard enemy behavior or add transport fees. Change one rule per maintenance window and record the new policy so players know why a route behaves differently.
An update breaks the installation
Stop the server, preserve the existing configuration files and record the last working versions. Check each dependency and the portal mod against the new Valheim build before updating clients. Test on a copy of the world first, then roll out the same version set to every player. Never delete xportal_networks.json while troubleshooting unless you have a backup of the network definitions.

- If you need ores, ingots, carts or enemy behavior to change, choose TeleportEverything.
- If you only need one compact portal directory, choose TheGreatestPortal.
- If console or other PlayFab crossplay players must join, verify the BepInEx crossplay restriction before committing to any of them.
TeleportEverything’s Thunderstore page reported 729.2K downloads in a 2026 capture. That is a platform-reported download count, not proof that it is universally the most popular or the best choice. Fit the mod to the server’s rules, then publish the exact versions, dependencies, installation locations and crossplay policy with the server invite.
