How to Add Breadcrumbs to a WordPress Site (Block Themes, Classic Themes, and BreadcrumbList Schema)

A complete guide to WordPress breadcrumbs: use the native block for block themes, Yoast’s block or shortcode for editor sites, and a documented PHP function for classic themes. Then verify visible trails and BreadcrumbList JSON-LD separately.

The simplest way to add breadcrumbs depends on your WordPress theme. With a block theme, insert WordPress’s native Breadcrumbs block and place it in the template or template part that controls your content. With a classic theme, Yoast SEO offers a settings toggle, editor block, shortcode, and PHP function. After either implementation, check the rendered navigation and the separate BreadcrumbList structured data; seeing breadcrumbs on screen does not by itself prove that valid schema is present.

What WordPress breadcrumbs do

Breadcrumbs are a secondary navigation trail that shows a visitor’s position in the site hierarchy. A typical trail might run from the homepage to a category and then to the current post. Each earlier item is a link, so a reader can move upward without using the browser’s Back button or the main navigation.

WordPress.org describes its Breadcrumbs block as showing “where they are on your website by displaying a trail of links from the homepage to the current page.” That explanation matters because breadcrumbs are primarily a navigation feature. Search engines may also use breadcrumb markup to categorize page information in search results, but Google’s display of a breadcrumb result is an eligibility outcome, not a promise.

There are two separate implementation questions:

  • What visitors see: the visible trail in the page layout.
  • What crawlers can parse: structured data, usually a BreadcrumbList in JSON-LD.

A site can have visible links with no valid structured data, or structured data that does not match the visible hierarchy. Test both.

Choose the right implementation

Use the native block when the site uses a block theme and the Site Editor. Use Yoast SEO when the site already relies on Yoast, uses a classic theme, or needs a documented PHP placement method. The choice is not only about avoiding code; it also determines where breadcrumbs can be placed and who maintains them when the theme changes.

Add breadcrumbs with the WordPress core block

This is the direct, no-code route for a site that has the block editor and a block theme. You can add a trail to one piece of content or place it in a template so every page using that template receives it.

1. Insert breadcrumbs on one post or page

  1. Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
  2. Select the block inserter, search for Breadcrumbs, and insert the block. You can also place the cursor in the editor and type /breadcrumbs.
  3. Move the block to the location where readers should see the trail, commonly above the title or below the site header.
  4. Open the block settings and decide whether to show the home item and the current-page item.
  5. Choose the separator that makes the hierarchy clear, then adjust colors, typography, dimensions, and borders to match the theme.
  6. Save or update the content and view the published URL as a logged-out visitor.

A block added inside a single post or page affects only that content. It is useful for a special landing page or for testing the appearance before making a site-wide change.

2. Place the block site-wide with the Site Editor

  1. Open the WordPress Site Editor and navigate to the template or template part that controls the content type you want to cover.
  2. Insert the Breadcrumbs block, or type /breadcrumbs inside the template editor.
  3. Save the template or template part.
  4. Check which page types actually use that template. A single post template may not control pages, archives, search results, or a custom post type.
  5. Open representative URLs from each intended type and confirm that the trail appears in the expected position.

A template part is useful when the same trail belongs in several templates: edit the part once, then include it wherever it is needed. A template is more appropriate when the placement or surrounding layout differs by page type.

3. Understand the core block’s coverage

WordPress documents the Breadcrumbs block for category, tag, author, and date archives; search results; 404 pages; and custom post types whose archive can appear in the trail. That support does not mean every URL automatically receives a breadcrumb. The relevant template must contain the block, and the custom post type must expose an archive that can be represented in the hierarchy.

  • Open a category and a tag archive to check taxonomy trails.
  • Open an author archive and a date archive if those pages are enabled on the site.
  • Run a search and confirm the search-results template includes the block.
  • Visit a deliberately invalid URL to inspect the 404 template.
  • Open a representative custom post type entry and its archive, if the post type has one.

Do not assume that editing the template shown in the Site Editor covers every page. WordPress can select different templates for individual content, archives, search, and errors.

Enable and place Yoast SEO breadcrumbs

Yoast supports several placement methods, which makes it practical for both editor-led sites and classic themes. First enable the feature, then choose the least fragile placement available for the theme.

1. Turn on the breadcrumb feature

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Breadcrumbs.
  2. Turn on the breadcrumb feature.
  3. Configure the appearance options available on that screen.
  4. Save the settings.

If the theme declares support for Yoast breadcrumbs, the setting is available directly. If it does not, you may need to place the block, shortcode, or PHP call yourself.

2. Use the Yoast Breadcrumbs block

  1. Edit the post, page, or template where the trail should appear.
  2. Insert the Yoast Breadcrumbs block from the block inserter.
  3. Place it above the title or in another consistent location, then save.
  4. Check the published page at the site’s normal viewing width as well as on a phone.

This method requires no PHP and keeps placement visible to editors. For a site-wide result, put the block in the appropriate template or reusable template part rather than adding it manually to every post.

3. Add the shortcode in a Shortcode block or classic editor

Yoast supports the shortcode Home » How to Add Breadcrumbs to a WordPress Site (Block Themes, Classic Themes, and BreadcrumbList Schema). In the block editor, place it inside a Shortcode block. In a classic editor, paste the shortcode where the trail should render and update the content or template area that contains it.

A shortcode is convenient when the editor is available but the theme does not provide a suitable breadcrumb block location. It still depends on the content area being rendered on every page where you expect the trail.

4. Add breadcrumbs to a classic theme with PHP

For site-wide placement in a classic theme, Yoast documents this call:

<?php
if ( function_exists('yoast_breadcrumb') ) {
  yoast_breadcrumb( '<p id="breadcrumbs">','</p>' );
}
?>
  1. Back up the site and the theme files before editing.
  2. Identify the template that controls the page type, commonly single.php for posts or page.php for pages.
  3. Place the call where the trail should appear, often just above the page title.
  4. Save the file, clear any page or server cache, and load a representative URL.
  5. Check that the HTML appears once and that the links point to the intended hierarchy.

The exact template and insertion point vary by theme. A theme update can overwrite direct file edits, so a permanent theme-supported integration is preferable when available. If you must customize a theme file, record the change and plan to recheck it after updates.

5. Declare theme support when appropriate

A theme can declare Yoast breadcrumb support with:

add_theme_support( 'yoast-seo-breadcrumbs' );

Yoast says this enables breadcrumb rendering and a Customizer component for themes that support it. Add the declaration through the theme’s supported customization mechanism, not by casually editing a parent theme that will be replaced during an update. Confirm the result in the Customizer or the theme’s documented integration path.

Make visible breadcrumbs and BreadcrumbList schema agree

Adding a visual trail is not the same as adding valid structured data. Google Search Central describes BreadcrumbList markup as a way to help Google categorize page information in search results. The markup must describe the page’s actual navigation hierarchy and be available on a page Google can access.

Access requirements

The page must be accessible to Google. A breadcrumb implementation cannot help if the URL is blocked by robots.txt, carries a noindex directive, or requires a login. Check the canonical, publicly reachable version of the page rather than a preview URL or an administrator-only view.

What the markup represents

Yoast states that its breadcrumbs output JSON-LD in the source code. Its developer documentation identifies the key schema concepts as:

  • @type set to BreadcrumbList.
  • An @id identifying the breadcrumb data.
  • An itemListElement array representing the hierarchy.
  • ListItem objects for the trail entries.

Do not treat the presence of a JSON-LD script as proof of correctness. The names, order, URLs, and current-page entry should match what a visitor sees. If the visible trail says Home → Guides → Controllers but the markup says Home → News → Controllers, fix the source that generated the mismatch.

Multiple valid trails

Google allows a page to expose multiple breadcrumb trails when there are multiple valid navigation paths. This is relevant to content that genuinely belongs in more than one hierarchy. Do not create extra paths merely to add keywords; each trail should describe a real route a visitor can follow.

Post-publishing validation workflow

  1. Publish or update the page.
  2. Open the rendered URL while logged out and verify the visible links and order.
  3. View the page source or use a structured-data testing workflow to locate the JSON-LD.
  4. Confirm that the data identifies a BreadcrumbList, includes the expected itemListElement hierarchy, and uses the same URLs shown to visitors.
  5. Repeat the check on an individual post, a page, an archive, a search result, and a 404 page when those templates are intended to contain breadcrumbs.

Even valid markup does not guarantee that Google will show a breadcrumb enhancement. Eligibility and search-result display are separate decisions.

Placement and coverage checks before you finish

Most implementation failures come from placing the block or function in a template that is not used for the URL being tested. Work from the site’s template map rather than assuming one file controls everything.

  • Individual posts: inspect the single-post template or the content area where the breadcrumb block or shortcode was inserted.
  • Pages: inspect the page template separately; many themes use a different file from posts.
  • Taxonomy archives: check category and tag templates, including any custom taxonomy templates.
  • Author and date archives: verify that those archives are enabled and that their templates contain the trail.
  • Search: run a real query while logged out and inspect the search-results template.
  • 404 pages: request a nonexistent path and check the error template.
  • Custom post types: confirm both the single template and the archive setting when the post type should appear in a trail.

Also check for duplicate output. A theme integration plus a block or shortcode can render two trails. Remove the extra method so visitors and crawlers receive one deliberate hierarchy.

Troubleshoot common problems

The Breadcrumbs block is missing

Confirm that you are using a WordPress version and editor configuration that exposes the core block, and check whether the active theme is a block theme if you are trying to use the Site Editor. If the site uses a classic theme, use the content editor where available or switch to the Yoast block, shortcode, or PHP method.

The block appears in the editor but not on the published page

Check that you saved the correct template, that the URL uses that template, and that a cache is not serving an older response. Test while logged out. If the block is inside a template part, confirm that the template actually includes that part.

Yoast’s setting is enabled but nothing renders

Enabling breadcrumbs does not automatically place visible markup in every theme. Add the Yoast Breadcrumbs block, use Home » How to Add Breadcrumbs to a WordPress Site (Block Themes, Classic Themes, and BreadcrumbList Schema), or place the documented PHP call in the appropriate classic-theme template. Then check the generated page source for the rendered HTML.

The PHP snippet causes an error or appears in the wrong place

Use the exact conditional function call, place it inside a PHP-capable theme template, and restore the backup if the site becomes unavailable. The right file differs by theme; inserting the call into an unrelated template can put breadcrumbs on the wrong page types or outside the intended layout.

Breadcrumbs are duplicated

Look for more than one active source: a theme’s built-in integration, a template block, a shortcode in content, and a PHP call can overlap. Keep one placement method for each template and remove redundant output.

The trail has the wrong parent or missing archive

Review the content’s category, tag, author, date, or custom post type archive relationships. Breadcrumbs can only show a hierarchy that the site’s content and templates expose. After correcting the assignment or archive configuration, republish and inspect both the visible trail and its structured data.

Structured data is absent or inconsistent

Inspect the rendered source, not only the editor. Confirm that the JSON-LD is generated on the canonical public URL and that its hierarchy matches the visible links. If the page is blocked, marked noindex, or login-protected, resolve that access condition before evaluating search eligibility.

A practical maintenance routine

Breadcrumbs are low-maintenance when their placement is intentional, but templates and content structures change. Add these checks to the site’s normal release routine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. After a theme update, open one post, one page, one archive, a search result, and a 404 URL.
  2. After changing categories, tags, custom post types, or archive settings, inspect affected trails for the correct parent and order.
  3. After moving a breadcrumb block or editing PHP, check for duplicate visible trails.
  4. After changing SEO or indexing settings, confirm that public pages remain crawlable and that the JSON-LD is still present.
  5. When a template is replaced in the Site Editor, verify that the Breadcrumbs block remains in the assigned template or template part.

Keep a record of any direct PHP customization. That makes it possible to restore the integration after a theme update instead of discovering the loss through a visitor’s broken navigation.

Which method should you use?

Use the WordPress core block when

  • The site uses a block theme and the Site Editor.
  • You want a no-code implementation controlled through templates.
  • You are comfortable checking template assignments for posts, archives, search, 404 pages, and custom post types.

Use Yoast when

  • Yoast SEO is already part of the site’s publishing workflow.
  • The site uses a classic theme that needs a documented PHP insertion point.
  • You want to choose among a block, shortcode, and theme-template function.
  • You want documented JSON-LD output to inspect after publishing.

Prefer a supported integration over a quick theme edit

A direct PHP edit can solve placement immediately, but it creates an update task. If the theme offers a supported integration, use it; otherwise keep a backup and a written note of the file and location changed. Whichever route you choose, judge success by two independent results: visitors can follow a correct visible trail, and the public page exposes structured data that accurately represents that trail.
