For a Minecraft Java Edition 26.1.2 world, use the official 26.1.2 server jar, Java 25, and a Fabric server installation that matches the pack. The first server launch creates its files and stops; change eula=false to eula=true, restart, and then install the server-required mods in the mods folder.
This guide explains the complete setup, how to keep clients and the server on exactly 26.1.2, and which hosting arrangement—LAN, a self-hosted machine, Realms, or a third-party host—fits your group.

What Vanilla V2 is and what “server-side” means
Vanilla V2 is a Fabric modpack for Minecraft Java Edition. Its project description presents it as “Vanilla, but sweeter! (a few enhancements and optimisations),” combining quality-of-life changes, visual improvements, performance work, interface changes, world-generation additions and small gameplay adjustments while trying to preserve the vanilla feel.
Modrinth marks the pack as client-side, server-side, and client-and-server compatible. That means a server can load the required server components instead of treating the pack as a purely visual client add-on. Players still need a compatible client installation when a mod changes what they see or how they interact with the world. A server-only installation does not automatically install anything on a player’s computer.

Requirements for a 26.1.2 server
Minecraft edition and version
Use Minecraft Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition. Mojang’s Java Team announced Minecraft Java 26.1.2 as a hotfix on April 9, 2026 and linked an official cross-platform server jar. Download that jar for the server rather than a jar from an unverified mirror.

Every participant should select exactly 26.1.2. A client on another 26.1 release can fail the protocol check, reject mod connections, or load a different world-generation result. Do not assume that “26.1” is close enough: the patch number is part of the compatibility target.
Java runtime
The cited CurseForge setup guide recommends Java 25 for Minecraft 26.1 and later. Confirm the runtime before you start:
java -version
The output should identify Java 25. If the command is missing or reports an older major version, install a 64-bit Java 25 runtime and reopen your terminal or command prompt so the updated PATH is detected. Keep the Java installation used by the server separate from an old Java version that another program may still require.
Computer, storage and network
- Use a machine that can remain powered on for the hours your group plays. A local server stops when the computer sleeps, shuts down or loses network access.
- Leave free disk space for the world, player data, logs, backups and future updates. Modded exploration can expand a world much faster than a short vanilla session.
- Reserve enough memory for the operating system and the game clients as well as the server. The guide’s example uses 4 GB for both the initial and maximum heap; that is a starting point, not a universal requirement.
- For players outside your home network, expect to configure firewall and router rules. The conventional Minecraft Java port is 25565, although you can choose another port if you also change the server configuration and connection address.
Choose how the world will be hosted
The right option depends on whether you value zero administration, complete control, a free setup, or guaranteed availability. The following comparison uses the decision factors that matter specifically for a Vanilla V2 world.
| Option | Upfront and recurring cost | Online availability | Mod and world-side support | Network setup | Control and limits | Uptime considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LAN session | No hosting fee; you use an existing computer and internet connection. | Only while the host’s game is open. | Works for a same-network group using matching client installations; it is not a substitute for a dedicated modded server. | Players must be on the same local network; no outside port forwarding is normally needed. | Least persistent and least administrative control. | Depends entirely on the host computer and local network. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | No provider fee, but you supply hardware, electricity and your own connection. | Available while the server process and host machine remain running. | Best control for Fabric, server-required mods, configuration files, backups and world upgrades. | Local players connect directly; outside players commonly require firewall permission and port 25565 forwarding. | Full file and console access, but you handle updates, security and performance. | Your power, router and internet connection determine uptime. |
| Realms for Java | The setup guide listed $7.99 per month in its May 13, 2026 publication; verify the current regional price before subscribing. | Mojang-managed and designed to remain available without your computer running. | Realms cannot add world-side modded blocks, entities or dimensions. That restriction makes it unsuitable for a pack whose features require those server changes. | No home-router port forwarding. | Simple administration but limited files, server software and mod control. | Managed service availability, subject to the service’s limits and maintenance. |
| Third-party Minecraft host | Usually a recurring rental fee; price, memory and player slots vary by provider and plan. | Normally intended to stay online independently of your home computer. | Often supports Fabric, but confirm that the host offers the Minecraft 26.1.2 loader and allows the mods Vanilla V2 requires. | The provider normally supplies the public address; you still configure the server panel and files. | More control than Realms, less physical control than your own machine. Plan limits determine CPU, memory, storage and backups. | Provider quality, maintenance policy, hardware contention and stated uptime vary. |
For a small group that plays together in one house, LAN is the fastest test. For a persistent Vanilla V2 world with full configuration access, self-hosting or a Fabric-capable third-party host is the practical choice. Realms is convenient for an unmodded or client-only experience, but its world-side restrictions are the decisive limitation here.
Prepare the server folder and official jar
- Create a new, dedicated folder for this world, such as
vanilla-v2-26.1.2. Do not place the server in your general Downloads folder or inside a client installation. - Download Mojang’s official Minecraft Java 26.1.2 server jar and save it in that folder.
- Rename the file to
server.jarif it has a longer downloaded name. The launch command below assumes that exact filename. - Open a terminal or command prompt in the server folder and verify Java 25 with
java -version. - Start the initial process with:
java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar server.jar nogui
-Xmx4G sets the maximum heap and -Xms4G sets the initial heap. Increase or decrease those values only after considering the machine’s total memory and the number of players and loaded chunks. Allocating nearly all physical memory to Java can make the operating system swap or terminate other programs.
The first run normally generates files such as eula.txt, server.properties, logs and a world directory, then stops because the EULA has not been accepted.
Accept the EULA and complete a vanilla first launch
- Open
eula.txtin a text editor. - Change the single setting from
eula=falsetoeula=trueafter reading and agreeing to Mojang’s EULA. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
- Run the same Java command again and leave the process open. The server console should continue displaying log output instead of exiting immediately.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console with
stopbefore editing files or making a backup.
Performing this vanilla launch first proves that Java, the jar and the directory permissions work before Fabric or the modpack adds another variable.

Install Vanilla V2 on a Fabric server
Because Vanilla V2 is a Fabric pack, the server must use a Fabric loader build that supports Minecraft 26.1.2. Use the loader and installer version specified by the current Vanilla V2 file page, and keep the Minecraft version set to 26.1.2 during installation. A loader for another Minecraft release is not made compatible merely by renaming files.
- Download the Vanilla V2 release for Minecraft 26.1.2 from its Modrinth project page. Check whether the release provides a server pack or a list of required server files.
- Install the matching Fabric server loader in the dedicated server folder. The installer or generated launch script may use a command different from the vanilla
server.jarcommand; follow the launch command created for that loader. - Copy the pack’s required server mods into the server’s
modsdirectory. Preserve each mod’s filename and do not mix files from another Minecraft or Fabric version. - Install the same release on each player’s client. A client-only visual or interface mod generally does not belong in the server’s
modsfolder. - Start the Fabric server once, watch the console for dependency or version errors, and stop it cleanly before changing the file set.
- Make a backup of the generated world before enabling world-generation or gameplay-changing components on an existing save. A new world is safer when the pack changes terrain, structures or dimensions.
Client-only versus server-required files
Do not copy every jar from a client profile into the server. Client-only mods are generally unnecessary on a dedicated server and can prevent it from starting. If the pack’s release notes identify a file as client-only, leave it out of mods. Conversely, omitting a required server mod can produce a missing-mod error or allow the server to start with behavior that does not match clients.
When a dependency error names a mod, compare the Minecraft version, Fabric loader version and dependency version shown in the Vanilla V2 release. Replace the incompatible file rather than adding random versions until the error disappears.
Managed hosting and the download step
If you prefer not to maintain Java, firewall rules and a machine that stays on, a managed option such as Modrinth Hosting can be considered near the pack download step. Verify its current Minecraft 26.1.2 support, Fabric compatibility, memory allocation, backup policy, mod-file access and price before migrating a world. The availability of a host does not remove the need for every client to use the exact pack and game version.

Networking instructions for each hosting choice
LAN
For a same-network session, open the world to LAN from the host’s Minecraft Java Edition menu and give players the displayed local connection information. Everyone must be on the same home or school network, and the host’s game must remain open. This approach avoids router configuration but does not provide a persistent dedicated world.
Self-hosted access for players outside your network
- Allow the Java server process through the host computer’s firewall on the selected port.
- Forward port 25565 on the router to the server computer’s local IP address, or use the custom port you configured.
- Give remote players your public address and port, not the server’s private address such as
192.168.x.x. - Test from a connection outside your home network. A test made from the same Wi-Fi can succeed even when the router’s external forwarding is wrong.
- If the address changes, arrange a reliable way to tell players the new address; do not expose administrative console credentials.
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding. In that case, use a host with a reachable public address or a networking solution designed for private networks rather than repeatedly changing firewall rules.
Third-party host
After selecting a plan, choose Minecraft 26.1.2 and Fabric in the provider’s panel, upload the server-required Vanilla V2 files, and use the panel’s assigned address. Confirm that the plan has enough memory for the pack and your expected view distance, and check how backups and world downloads work before the first major exploration session.

“Incompatible version” or protocol errors
Confirm that the launcher profile, server jar, Fabric loader and Vanilla V2 release all target 26.1.2. Patch-level mismatches are enough to block a connection. Remove stale profiles or duplicate mod jars from the client before trying again.
Best Value
“Missing mods” or mismatched mod list
Compare the server’s mods directory with the required server list and the player’s client profile. Add missing server-required dependencies, remove client-only jars from the server, and use the exact file versions shipped for the 26.1.2 release.
The server closes immediately
Run the launch command from a terminal so the error remains visible. Check for Java 25, a malformed EULA file, a wrong jar filename, insufficient permissions, or a Fabric dependency error. The first vanilla launch should have generated the EULA and configuration files; if it did not, correct the working directory and run the command there.
Players on the internet cannot connect
Check that the server process is running, the firewall permits Java, the router forwards the selected port to the correct local IP, and players are using the public address. If LAN players can join but remote players cannot, the problem is usually forwarding, firewall policy or carrier-grade NAT rather than the modpack.
The world behaves differently after adding the pack
World-generation and gameplay components should be enabled before generating new terrain whenever possible. Restore the pre-install backup if a test shows unwanted changes, and do not repeatedly switch a world between incompatible mod sets.
Operate the world safely
Backups
Stop the server before copying the world directory, or use a host’s documented consistent-backup feature. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. Test that a backup can actually be restored before treating it as protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUpdates
Do not update Minecraft, Fabric or Vanilla V2 in place while players are online. Record the current versions, copy the world, update a test instance, and read the pack’s release notes for removed mods, changed dependencies or world-generation warnings. Require every player to update their client before reconnecting.
Performance
Watch the server console and system memory while several players explore different areas. Lower view or simulation distance if chunk generation saturates the CPU, and avoid assigning more Java memory than the machine can physically support. A larger heap cannot compensate for a weak processor, slow storage or a congested connection.
Which setup is best for your group?
- Choose LAN when everyone is physically together and the world only needs to exist during one player’s session.
- Choose a self-hosted dedicated server when you want complete Fabric and file control and can keep a machine, router and backups maintained.
- Choose Realms only when managed availability and simplicity matter more than world-side mod support; its restriction on modded blocks, entities and dimensions conflicts with many server gameplay packs.
- Choose a third-party host when you need an always-online world without maintaining home hardware, and verify the provider’s 26.1.2 Fabric support, resource limits, backups and uptime terms first.
For a normal Vanilla V2 multiplayer world, the reliable path is a Fabric server targeting Minecraft Java 26.1.2, Java 25, the pack’s server-required mods, authenticated access and a whitelist. Decide between self-hosting and rented infrastructure based on who will maintain the files and whether the world must remain online when that person is away.
