Exploration is the gentlest starting point, Standard preserves the intended survival loop, Wilderness Survival is deliberately punishing, Creative Building removes survival friction, and a custom world lets you combine individual controls such as the grace timer, death punishment, winters and temporal stability.
You can also personalize the seraph, use clothing for both appearance and insulation, tune graphics and comfort settings, and change server behavior through startup parameters or serverconfig.json. The right profile depends on whether you value learning, realism, danger, building or multiplayer administration—not on one universally “best” preset.

Choose a world preset before changing individual rules
The world-creation screen supports pre-made templates and individually customized settings. Start with the closest preset, then change one or two rules rather than rebuilding the entire experience from scratch. The following descriptions come from the Vintage Story Wiki’s “Getting started” guidance; labels and behavior can change between game versions.
| Preset | What it changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration | Turns off direct threats such as hostile-creature aggression and temporal stability, reduces hunger and temperature pressure, and keeps inventory on death. | First-time players who want to learn crafting, landmarks and movement without constant survival penalties. |
| Standard | Uses temporal stability, hunger, realistic temperature, first-night monsters and inventory loss on death. | The intended full-survival experience. |
| Wilderness Survival | Applies severe penalties: immediate inventory drop, random respawn within a massive radius, reduced health and stronger creatures. | Experienced players seeking a deliberately harsh run. |
| Homo sapiens | Removes mystical-lore features such as traders and ancient ruins. | A survival game focused on a less-mystical setting. |
| Creative Building | Starts with a flat building world and Creative Mode. | Construction, testing layouts and unrestricted experimentation. |
Exploration: the safest learning environment
Exploration is more than an easy difficulty switch. Its combination of reduced hunger and temperature pressure, no hostile-creature aggression, no temporal-stability threat and inventory retention on death removes several early failure loops at once. That makes it useful for learning knapping, pit kilns, food preservation and travel before committing to a survival economy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It is also a practical cooperative setting when players have very different experience levels. New players can experiment with tools and shelters while the group still uses a naturally generated world. If the world later feels too forgiving, you can raise individual pressures rather than abandoning the save.
Standard: preserve the complete survival loop
Standard is the reference point for most custom decisions. Hunger, temperature and temporal stability all matter; monsters can appear on the first night; and dying costs the inventory. Choose it when you want the systems to interact as designed, then soften a single frustration—usually the grace timer, death punishment or dropped-item duration—instead of disabling survival mechanics wholesale.

Wilderness Survival combines several severe penalties. An immediate inventory drop makes every death expensive, a random respawn can place you far from your base, reduced health narrows your margin for mistakes, and stronger creatures make scouting and night travel riskier. Select it for a challenge run with a clear recovery plan: establish landmarks, maintain spare tools and avoid carrying irreplaceable materials when exploring.
Homo sapiens and Creative Building
Homo sapiens is a ruleset choice, not merely a difficulty level. It removes traders and ancient ruins, so choose it when you want the survival and technology systems without those mystical-lore elements.
Creative Building starts with a flat world and Creative Mode, which is ideal for unrestricted construction. If you want natural terrain while building, create a normally generated world and enable Creative Mode through the available world options instead.

World rules worth tuning individually
After selecting a preset, use the individual controls to target the exact source of difficulty or inconvenience. Think in three categories: threat, realism and resource or terrain distribution.

| Setting | Published range or choices | What the adjustment affects |
|---|---|---|
| Grace Timer | 0–10 in-game days | How long the world waits before monsters appear. |
| Death Punishment | World-setting choices | The consequence of dying, including whether inventory is retained or dropped. |
| Dropped Item Timer | 5–60 minutes | How long dropped items remain available after death. |
| True Winters | Toggle | Whether winter follows the harsher, more realistic winter behavior. |
| Temporal Stability | Toggle | Whether temporal-stability pressure is active. |
| Climate Distribution | World-generation option | How climates are distributed across the generated world. |
| Surface Deposit Frequency | World-generation option | How often surface deposits appear. |
Make the first nights manageable without removing survival
A longer Grace Timer is the cleanest way to give a new settlement time to gather food, firewood and shelter while leaving hunger, temperature and temporal systems active. The documented range is 0 to 10 in-game days. Pair it with a less severe Death Punishment if the main concern is losing progress, and choose a Dropped Item Timer between 5 and 60 minutes when you want recovery to be possible but not guaranteed.
Increase realism and danger deliberately
True Winters and Temporal Stability each add a different kind of pressure. True Winters changes seasonal expectations; Temporal Stability adds a non-weather threat that affects how and where you operate. Turn on one first, play several in-game days, and only then add the other so you can identify which rule changed your routine.
Change world distribution only when you understand the trade-off
Climate Distribution and Surface Deposit Frequency affect the shape and resource rhythm of a new world rather than the immediate combat difficulty. Adjust them when you have a specific goal—such as a broader climate journey or a different frequency of surface resources—and document the choice before generating the map. These controls generally cannot be meaningfully “tested” by changing them after the world exists.
A reliable world-creation sequence
- Choose Exploration, Standard, Wilderness Survival, Homo sapiens or Creative Building based on the experience you want.
- Open the individual settings and identify the one pressure you actually want to change.
- Set the Grace Timer, Death Punishment or Dropped Item Timer first if early failure is the issue.
- Change True Winters or Temporal Stability only when you specifically want more environmental or temporal danger.
- Review Climate Distribution and Surface Deposit Frequency before generating the world, since they shape the map’s resource and terrain pattern.
- Record the final settings in the world name or a separate note so everyone joining a multiplayer world knows the rules.
Customize your seraph without mods
Vanilla character creation covers appearance and play style. You can select hairstyles, facial hair, eye colors, skin tones, voice pitch and starter clothing. These choices are available without installing anything and can be changed only through the character-creation choices for that world, so decide whether you want a recognizable long-term identity before starting.

The six classes
There are six classes: Commoner, Hunter, Malefactor, Clockmaker, Blackguard and Tailor. Class selection changes hunger rate, movement speed, crafting abilities, combat strengths and weaknesses. Commoner is presented as the balanced default. The other five are specialized choices; read each class’s in-game description and select the one whose trade-offs match your group’s jobs rather than choosing only by its name.
- Commoner: the balanced starting point when you do not want a pronounced advantage or weakness.
- Hunter: a specialized option for players who want the class bonuses described on the creation screen to support hunting and field work.
- Malefactor: a specialized option with its own listed strengths and weaknesses; compare those details with your intended combat and survival routine.
- Clockmaker: a specialized option suited to players interested in the abilities shown for mechanical and crafting work.
- Blackguard: a specialized option for a combat-oriented approach, subject to the exact bonuses and penalties shown in your build.
- Tailor: a specialized option that is particularly relevant when clothing production and restricted garments matter to your settlement.
Because class effects include hunger and movement as well as crafting and combat, a class that looks powerful in one role can create extra food or travel work elsewhere. In a group, assign complementary classes rather than giving every player the same specialization.
Use clothing for appearance, warmth and durability management
The Clothes reference describes garments as decorative equipment that changes the player’s appearance, but many pieces also provide cold protection. Accessories can be purely cosmetic. Starter clothing comes from class selection; additional pieces can be crafted from cloth, leather or related materials, found in ruin loot or purchased from traders. Tailors can craft many restricted pieces.
Understand the cold threshold
Under the default world settings described by the reference, an unequipped player begins taking cold damage below 0°C. A full fur set in good condition provides a worked example of +6.5°C warmth. Treat that number as a version-specific example, not a universal guarantee: the Clothes page is verified for Vintage Story 1.22.5, and warmth depends on the garment set and its condition.
Plan clothing before winter travel
- Keep a complete warm set at your base and a spare set before committing to long journeys.
- Check condition before leaving; a damaged garment provides less reliable protection than a good-condition one.
- Use class starter clothing as an early advantage, then replace it with crafted, looted or traded pieces as materials become available.
- Reserve cosmetic accessories for situations where their lack of insulation will not expose you to cold damage.
Condition loss and repair
Clothing loses condition while worn. Under default settings, the reference records a 100% condition decrease after 54 days (six months). Repair materials restore different amounts:

| Repair material | Condition restored |
|---|---|
| Flax twine | 10% |
| Linen | 50% |
| Sewing kit | 75% |
Use the cheapest repair that keeps a garment serviceable, and save sewing kits for valuable or difficult-to-replace pieces. Since the 54-day figure is tied to default settings and the page’s 1.22.5 verification, check the condition behavior in your installed version before planning a long seasonal expedition.
Tune graphics, interface and motion comfort
The settings reference covers visual quality, performance and comfort in the same menu. It was last verified for Vintage Story 1.19.7, so compare its labels with those in your installed build before following a path exactly.

| Setting group | Use it to adjust | Decision guide |
|---|---|---|
| SSAO, shadows, particles and dynamic lights | Lighting detail, shadow quality and effects. | Raise for visual fidelity; lower when frame rate or GPU load is the priority. |
| Resolution, FPS limits and VSync | Image sharpness, frame pacing and synchronization. | Match resolution to your display, set an FPS limit your hardware can sustain, and use VSync when tearing is distracting. |
| RAM optimization and occlusion culling | Memory behavior and the amount of hidden geometry sent for rendering. | Enable the options that reduce load on your system; occlusion culling can reduce GPU work in blocked-off scenes. |
| View bobbing and camera shake strength | Motion while walking or during impacts. | Reduce or disable them if movement feels uncomfortable. |
| GUI scale and block/coordinate overlays | Interface readability and navigation information. | Increase GUI scale for legibility and enable overlays when precise building or location sharing matters. |
| Minimap | On-screen orientation and local navigation. | Keep it visible for exploration convenience; hide it for a more demanding navigation style. |
| Immersive mouse mode and immersive first-person mode | How the cursor and viewpoint behave during play. | Choose the mode that fits your input hardware and whether you prefer a more diegetic view. |
A practical performance pass
- Set your display resolution first, then choose an FPS limit your system can hold consistently.
- Use VSync if you see tearing; if latency matters more, test a capped frame rate without it.
- Reduce shadows, SSAO, particles or dynamic lights before lowering resolution when you want to preserve image sharpness.
- Try occlusion culling and RAM optimization, then observe whether loading behavior and frame pacing improve in your build.
- Adjust GUI scale and overlays separately from graphics quality so a readable interface does not require sacrificing visual detail.
Make movement less tiring
View bobbing and camera shake are comfort controls, not difficulty settings. Lower camera shake strength and disable view bobbing if motion is distracting or causes discomfort. Immersive first-person mode and immersive mouse mode are preference choices; neither is required for survival progression.

A December 22, 2025 WinterNode guide documents no-mod controls in startup parameters and serverconfig.json. The exact parameter names are version-sensitive, so compare your generated configuration with the guide and the server build you actually run.
| Control | What it can do |
|---|---|
| Stop time when the server is empty | Prevents the in-game clock from advancing while nobody is connected. |
| Public advertising | Makes the server visible in the public server listing when enabled. |
daysPerMonth |
Extends or contracts the in-game year by changing the number of days in each month. |
harshWinters |
Enables harsher winter behavior. |
foodSpoilSpeed |
Changes how quickly stored food spoils. |
caveIns |
Enables cave-in behavior. |
blockGravity |
Applies gravity behavior to sand, gravel and stone. |
| Rotating local backups | Sets how many local backup copies the server keeps in rotation. |
Safe editing procedure
- Stop the server cleanly before editing
serverconfig.json; do not change a live file while it is writing. - Make a dated copy of the current configuration and world backup.
- Change only one or two settings, such as
daysPerMonthandharshWinters, so the effect is identifiable. - Start the server and confirm that it loads without a configuration error.
- Play for several in-game days, checking food, weather, construction and backups before making another change.
- Validate every key against the installed server version, especially after an update.
The one-or-two-setting approach is operational guidance from the hosting guide rather than an official game manual, but it prevents a common administration problem: changing several interacting rules and being unable to tell which one caused an unexpected result.

Multiplayer administration choices
Stopping time while empty suits small private communities that do not want the calendar or food stores to advance unattended. Public advertising is appropriate only when you intend to accept outside players. A longer daysPerMonth gives builders and traders more calendar time, while foodSpoilSpeed, harshWinters, cave-ins and block gravity increase logistical pressure. Keep rotating local backups enabled at a count that matches your storage capacity and recovery needs.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Changing too many rules at once
If you alter the grace period, death behavior, winters, spoilage and cave-ins simultaneously, an unexpected result is difficult to diagnose. Restore the last known configuration, then reapply one or two changes and observe them for several in-game days.
Assuming wiki labels match every release
The settings reference was last verified for 1.19.7, while the clothing reference was verified for 1.22.5. Treat those dates as evidence boundaries. If a label or option is absent in your build, use the current in-game tooltip and generated server configuration rather than forcing an older instruction.
Ignoring clothing condition
A warm set is not permanently warm. Check condition before winter travel, repair it with flax twine, linen or a sewing kit as appropriate, and carry a replacement when the trip cannot be interrupted.
Making a server hard without a recovery plan
Wilderness penalties, harsher winters, faster spoilage, cave-ins and block gravity can affect the whole community. Announce the change, preserve a backup, and give players time to adapt before adding another source of risk.
