There is no established apples-to-apples test showing which produces the cleanest cutout or uses the least hardware, so test your camera, lighting, movement, and system load before committing.
Which virtual green screen software should you choose?
- Compatible RTX PC on Windows, no physical screen: Start with NVIDIA Broadcast. It removes, replaces, or blurs the background and makes the processed camera feed available as a virtual camera to apps such as OBS and XSplit. Check its current requirements before installing.
- Physical green screen and a flexible production setup: Use OBS Studio. Its built-in Chroma Key filter removes a selected color and works across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- OBS workflow, no green screen, and willing to add a community plugin: Consider the OBS Background Removal plugin. It is not built into OBS; verify that the current plugin release supports your OBS version and operating system.
- Windows app with integrated background effects: Evaluate XSplit Broadcaster. It includes automatic removal through VCam as well as Chroma Key and Color Key modes. Higher automatic-removal quality settings use more hardware resources, according to XSplit’s support guidance.
These are different workflows, not a controlled quality ranking. A clean result depends on your camera, lighting, movement, and system, and the available product information does not establish a universal winner for edge quality or performance.
How the background-removal methods differ
Chroma key: remove a chosen color
Chroma key identifies a selected color—typically the green of a backdrop—and makes it transparent so a scene background can show through. OBS includes this method as a native filter. A physical screen is useful for providing an even, consistent color, but it is not needed for software segmentation methods such as NVIDIA Broadcast or XSplit’s automatic removal.
If you choose chroma key, a green screen backdrop gives the filter a consistent color to remove. This is an optional part of that workflow, not a requirement for the software-removal options.

Software segmentation: remove the background without a screen
AI or other software segmentation separates the person from the background without relying on a solid-colored backdrop. NVIDIA Broadcast supplies the processed feed through a virtual camera. XSplit offers automatic removal within its production app. In OBS, the no-screen option covered here is a community plugin rather than a built-in OBS filter.
What to check before installing
NVIDIA Broadcast requirements
NVIDIA’s current requirements page lists a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher; 8 GB of RAM; Windows 10 64-bit; and driver 570 or higher. It recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher, and installation requires an internet connection. Requirements can change, so check NVIDIA’s current app page before installing. These requirements are a compatibility check, not a reason by themselves to buy an RTX card solely for background removal.
OBS Studio and its plugin
OBS is cross-platform, but its minimum system requirements are not a guarantee that a particular computer can stream or record adequately. OBS notes that actual performance depends on factors including encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See OBS Studio for current platform requirements.

The OBS forum resource for the Background Removal plugin lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support and OBS 28.0.0 as its minimum version. Its listing shows a last update of August 9, 2026. Check the resource’s latest release information and compatibility before installing; community plugins can have different maintenance and support arrangements from OBS itself.
XSplit Broadcaster
XSplit Broadcaster is positioned for Windows, and its system-requirements page describes Windows 10/11 64-bit support. Check XSplit’s current requirements against your installed version and intended production resolution rather than assuming a minimum spec will suit every scene.
How to set up each option
Use NVIDIA Broadcast as an OBS camera source
- Confirm your PC meets the current NVIDIA Broadcast requirements and install the app with internet access.
- In NVIDIA Broadcast, select your camera and choose a background effect—removal, replacement, or blur.
- In OBS, add a camera source and select the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual camera as its device. The exact source label can vary with software versions.
- Preview the result with your normal lighting, movement, and scene. Check for missed edges or unwanted background changes, then adjust the setup before going live.
NVIDIA says its processed feed can be used by apps such as OBS and XSplit. If the virtual camera is unavailable, make sure Broadcast is installed and running, then reopen the receiving app and check its camera-device list.

Apply OBS’s built-in Chroma Key filter
- In OBS, select the camera source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s Filters and add the Chroma Key effect filter.
- Choose the key color that matches your backdrop. OBS provides controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction; adjust them while previewing the scene rather than assuming one setting suits every camera and screen.
- Check the cutout around hair, shoulders, and moving objects. If the key removes parts of you or leaves colored edges, adjust the filter and improve the consistency of the screen’s lighting.

Add background removal to OBS with the community plugin
- Open the official OBS forum Background Removal resource and verify its latest release supports your operating system and OBS version.
- Follow the installation instructions for that release; do not assume an OBS update and a plugin update are compatible automatically.
- Restart OBS if the resource’s instructions require it, then check the available filters for the plugin’s background-removal option.
- Preview the camera with typical movement and scene load, and remove or update the plugin if it causes instability or is incompatible.
This is a third-party add-on, so its support and update schedule are separate from OBS Studio’s core software.

- Install the current Windows version from XSplit Broadcaster and check its system requirements.
- Choose automatic removal through VCam if you do not have a physical screen; use Chroma Key or Color Key when your setup calls for color-based removal.
- Preview the result and choose an automatic-removal quality setting your system can handle. XSplit says higher quality settings use more hardware resources.
- Before relying on the free plan for a broadcast, check its current resolution, watermark, scene-count, virtual-camera, and commercial-use terms.

Test before choosing
Try the option on the same camera, lighting, movement, scene, and output settings you expect to use. Inspect hair and shoulder edges, movement, and whether background details are incorrectly removed. Also observe whether your streaming setup remains responsive while the effect is active. These checks help reveal fit on your own system; they are not a substitute for a controlled cross-product benchmark.
Troubleshooting common problems
The background effect is not available in the receiving app
- NVIDIA Broadcast camera is missing: Confirm Broadcast is installed and running, then reopen OBS or XSplit and inspect its camera-device list. Verify that the PC meets the current NVIDIA requirements.
- OBS filter is missing: OBS’s built-in Chroma Key is an effect filter on a selected source. The screen-free Background Removal option is a separate plugin; check that it installed for the OBS version you are running.
- XSplit mode or virtual camera is restricted: Review the current plan comparison, since XSplit marks virtual camera and AI background removal as watermarked on Free in the pricing comparison described above.
The cutout has holes, rough edges, or colored spill
- With OBS Chroma Key: Recheck the selected key color and adjust similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction in the filter while watching a preview. A more consistent screen color can make color removal easier.
- With automatic removal: Test the available quality setting and your lighting and movement. For XSplit, higher quality settings use more hardware resources, so watch system responsiveness as you adjust.
The stream or recording becomes sluggish
OBS identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors affecting performance. Reduce production demands or simplify the scene to isolate the cause, then test the effect again. For XSplit automatic removal, also try a lower quality setting if the higher setting is taxing the system. Do not infer that one product is universally lighter from these troubleshooting steps.
