No VPN can guarantee lag-free Warzone. A VPN adds encryption and another network hop, so it can increase ping. However, it may improve consistency for players whose ISP uses a congested or inefficient route to the game server. For most PC players, NordVPN is the strongest overall candidate; ExpressVPN is the easiest recommendation for PS5, Xbox, and router setups; Surfshark is the best fit for households with many devices.

Use a VPN only if your own in-game tests show better ping, fewer spikes, less packet loss, or more reliable matchmaking. If your normal connection performs better, disconnect the VPN.

Quick comparison

VPN Best for Protocol to try first Console method Simultaneous connections Refund period Main drawback
NordVPN Most PC players NordLynx Router or PC sharing 10 30 days May not improve your ISP route
ExpressVPN PS5, Xbox, and routers Lightway PC hotspot, Ethernet sharing, or router Check current plan 30 days Premium positioning
Surfshark Families and multi-device homes WireGuard Router or manual setup Unlimited 30 days Device count does not guarantee capacity
Proton VPN Privacy-first users WireGuard Router or supported sharing setup Plan-dependent 30 days on paid plans Free servers may be distant or congested
Private Internet Access Unlimited-device households WireGuard Router or PC sharing Unlimited 30 days Less Warzone-specific evidence

Subscription prices, discounts, renewal terms, and taxes change by country and date. Check the providers’ current U.S. checkout pages rather than relying on a static price in an article: NordVPN pricing, ExpressVPN order page, Surfshark pricing, Proton VPN pricing, and Private Internet Access checkout.

Our recommendations

This is a feature-and-evidence comparison, not a claim of original hands-on Warzone benchmarking. VPN performance depends heavily on your city, ISP, game region, device, server load, and time of day. A provider that performs well for one player can make another player’s connection worse.

1. NordVPN — best overall candidate

NordVPN is the strongest general recommendation for PC players who want a mainstream VPN with a fast gaming-oriented protocol, broad server coverage, and a reasonable testing window. Its NordLynx protocol should be the first option to try, followed by OpenVPN UDP if necessary.

NordVPN supports up to 10 simultaneous devices on its VPN plan and advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee. The provider’s published comparison tested NordLynx alongside ExpressVPN Lightway, PIA WireGuard, PureVPN WireGuard, and Surfshark WireGuard between January 1, 2024, and February 1, 2025. NordVPN reported the fastest median download and upload results in that comparison, but the testing used general speed-test routes rather than a universal Warzone latency test. It therefore does not prove that NordVPN will always deliver the lowest in-game ping. Read NordVPN’s methodology and gaming guide.

Choose the VPN tier rather than paying for unrelated bundle features unless you want those extras. Connect to the nearest suitable location and keep NordVPN only if it improves your actual Warzone telemetry.

2. ExpressVPN — best for PS5, Xbox, and router setup

ExpressVPN has the clearest setup advantage for console households. It uses the Lightway protocol, offers Smart Location for automatic server selection, and publishes instructions for sharing a VPN-connected Windows PC with a PlayStation or Xbox through a Wi-Fi hotspot or Ethernet cable. It also provides router-related guidance. See ExpressVPN’s Warzone setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That indirect console support matters because PS5 and Xbox generally do not run a standard VPN provider app in the same way a Windows PC does. You normally need a compatible router, a PC sharing its VPN connection, or another supported network configuration.

ExpressVPN lists servers in 113 countries and offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, but server-location claims and checkout prices are changeable. Treat it as a premium convenience choice, not an automatic latency upgrade. If Lightway produces higher ping than your ordinary route, try another nearby location or turn the VPN off.

3. Surfshark — best value for multiple devices

Surfshark is the most commercially compelling choice for families, shared homes, and players who want to connect many devices under one account. It advertises unlimited simultaneous connections, major desktop and mobile apps, and router or manual setup options for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The company also states that it has more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries; verify those figures on the live site because network claims can change. Review Surfshark’s Warzone guidance.

Try WireGuard first. Unlimited connections means the account can support many simultaneous devices; it does not mean unlimited bandwidth or identical performance when several people are streaming, downloading, and gaming at once.

  • Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
  • Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
  • Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
  • Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.

Surfshark’s pricing interface offers monthly, one-year, and two-year structures. The two-year offer is billed initially and then annually after the initial term according to the supplied research, so check the renewal wording before buying. A 30-day money-back guarantee gives you time to compare the VPN with your ordinary connection.

4. Proton VPN — best privacy-oriented alternative

Proton VPN is a strong choice when privacy transparency matters more than specialized console convenience. Proton says its applications are open source, does not track users’ IP addresses or visited websites, and offers a free plan with no data limit or artificial speed limit. See Proton VPN’s current plans and its free-plan details.

That does not automatically make the free plan the best Warzone option. Free-server availability, distance, congestion, and protocol selection can produce higher or less predictable latency. Use it as a cautious test, not as a promise of competitive performance.

Paid Proton plans may offer a better choice of locations and features. Test the nearest available server at the times you actually play, and compare party chat, matchmaking, and packet loss—not just a browser speed test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Private Internet Access — unlimited-device alternative

Private Internet Access is worth considering for large households because it advertises unlimited devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Its long-term plans are promoted as a value option, but promotional prices and renewal terms change. Check PIA’s current purchase page.

PIA should not outrank the leading recommendations solely because of its device allowance. Without independent, reproducible Warzone-specific latency testing in your region, treat it as an alternative to test locally rather than a proven lowest-ping choice.

What a VPN can—and cannot—fix

Warzone performance problems are not all the same:

  • Ping is the round-trip time between your device and the game server.
  • Jitter is variation in ping. A connection with a low average ping can still feel poor if the number constantly swings.
  • Packet loss occurs when data fails to reach its destination.
  • Packet burst is a Warzone network-performance symptom that can be associated with unstable routing, congestion, or other connection problems.
  • Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data a connection can transfer. More bandwidth does not automatically mean lower ping.
  • NAT type describes how the router handles inbound and outbound connections. A VPN can change NAT behavior and may interfere with matchmaking, party joining, or voice chat.

A VPN may help when your ISP sends Warzone traffic through an overloaded or inefficient route, when a different exit location reaches the relevant game region more cleanly, or when traffic management affects the way your connection is handled. It can also hide your home IP from peers or services that see the VPN address, reducing direct exposure to IP-targeting attempts.

A VPN may hurt when its server is distant or congested, when encryption overhead strains an older device, when it creates stricter NAT behavior, or when your ordinary ISP route is already efficient. Wi-Fi interference, bufferbloat, background uploads, and local congestion are often better solved at home than with a VPN. Both ExpressVPN and Surfshark acknowledge that the effect can depend on routing and may improve or worsen performance. ExpressVPN’s explanation and Surfshark’s gaming overview provide the relevant caveats.

How to choose a VPN for Warzone

  1. Prioritize consistency over headline speed. Look for low ping, low jitter, and low packet loss during actual matches.
  2. Choose nearby server density. A large country list is less useful than several reliable locations near you and the relevant game region.
  3. Try a modern protocol. Start with WireGuard, NordLynx, or Lightway, then compare OpenVPN UDP. Use OpenVPN TCP mainly when UDP fails or the network blocks it.
  4. Check console and router support. A subscription is not automatically a PS5 or Xbox app.
  5. Test NAT and communication. Party invites, crossplay, voice chat, and matchmaking matter as much as ping.
  6. Use a meaningful refund period. A money-back guarantee is not necessarily a free trial. Check the conditions.
  7. Separate privacy from gaming claims. A privacy-oriented service is not automatically the fastest gaming route, and a fast VPN is not automatically the best privacy choice.

Do not rank a VPN solely by its country count, server count, maximum advertised throughput, encryption slogan, or claims about guaranteed bot lobbies.

How to use a VPN on PC

  1. Subscribe through the provider’s official website and install its Windows application.
  2. Sign in and select the fastest nearby server, or use Smart Location/automatic location if offered.
  3. Choose WireGuard, NordLynx, or Lightway where available. If the connection fails, test OpenVPN UDP.
  4. Enable the kill switch if preventing accidental exposure of your home IP is important. Confirm that it does not unexpectedly interrupt the game.
  5. Launch Warzone and enable its network telemetry or performance display.
  6. Play several matches, then compare average ping, spikes, packet loss, packet burst, matchmaking time, voice chat, and disconnections with the VPN off.
  7. Keep the VPN only when the complete experience improves. A lower speed-test result is acceptable if gameplay is more stable; a higher speed-test result is irrelevant if matches are worse.

ExpressVPN’s published PC path is to download the Windows app, sign in, select a server or Smart Location, and launch Warzone. Use the provider’s current instructions if labels differ.

How to use a VPN on PS5 or Xbox

Consoles generally require an indirect setup:

Method 1: Windows Wi-Fi hotspot

  1. Install and connect the VPN on a Windows PC.
  2. Enable Internet Connection Sharing or a mobile hotspot.
  3. Configure the hotspot to share the VPN-connected adapter.
  4. Connect the console to the hotspot.
  5. Test sign-in, party joining, voice chat, crossplay, matchmaking, and in-game telemetry.

Method 2: Ethernet sharing

  1. Connect the PC to the VPN.
  2. Connect the console to the PC with Ethernet.
  3. Enable connection sharing and select the VPN connection as the shared connection.
  4. Test Warzone and platform services.

Method 3: VPN-compatible router

  1. Confirm that the router supports the provider’s firmware or manual WireGuard/OpenVPN configuration.
  2. Install the provider profile or configuration.
  3. Connect the router to a nearby VPN server.
  4. Put the console on that network.
  5. Check NAT type, party chat, matchmaking, and ping before committing to the setup.

Router VPNs can affect every device on the network and may require careful NAT, UPnP, or port configuration. Do not assume that a VPN will improve NAT. ExpressVPN documents PC hotspot and Ethernet sharing, while Surfshark documents router and manual console setup. ExpressVPN console guidance · Surfshark console guidance.

A practical test for lower ping and fewer packet bursts

Use the same wired or Wi-Fi connection and compare conditions as consistently as possible. Test at least three sessions at similar times, use the same mode and region where possible, and try two or three nearby VPN servers. An alternative region can be useful for comparison, but it may make latency worse.

Keep the VPN only if it delivers a meaningful overall improvement. If ping, jitter, packet loss, NAT, or queue times worsen, disconnect it and troubleshoot the underlying connection.

VPN troubleshooting

The VPN increases ping

  • Switch to the closest available server.
  • Try another server in the same city or country.
  • Change protocol.
  • Disable multi-hop or privacy-routing features that add extra distance.
  • Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi.
  • Turn the VPN off if the ordinary route is better.

Packet burst continues

A VPN cannot repair every cause of packet burst. Test Ethernet, pause cloud synchronization and large downloads, check for Wi-Fi interference, review router firmware and bufferbloat, and look for congestion from other household devices. If the issue persists, compare another ISP route rather than repeatedly changing VPN servers.

NAT becomes strict or moderate

Test party invites, crossplay, voice chat, and matchmaking. Try another VPN server or disable the VPN for console gaming. On PC, split tunneling may let only selected traffic use the VPN where the provider supports it. Router-level VPNs may require additional NAT or UPnP configuration.

Warzone will not connect

  1. Change VPN server.
  2. Switch between a WireGuard-based protocol and OpenVPN UDP.
  3. Temporarily disable ad blocking, threat protection, or custom DNS features.
  4. Restart the VPN app, router, and game.
  5. Test the account and platform without the VPN.
  6. Check Activision’s current Warzone support and known-issues pages.

Voice chat stops working

Check whether the VPN changed NAT or platform communication. Try another nearby server, test without the VPN, review platform privacy and crossplay settings, and use split tunneling if available.

Matchmaking takes longer

Return to a nearby server, avoid distant regions, and compare the normal connection. A longer queue is a trade-off—not evidence that the VPN found easier opponents.

Can a VPN get your Warzone account banned?

Activision’s Security and Enforcement Policy lists cheating, boosting, security circumvention, exploiting glitches, malicious reporting, and other violations that can lead to penalties, including account or hardware bans. The reviewed policy does not establish that ordinary VPN use by itself is a ban-worthy offense. Read Activision’s current enforcement policy.

The safe conclusion is that using a VPN for privacy or routing is not the same as cheating, but policies and terms can change and players remain responsible for following them. Do not use a VPN to cheat, boost, manipulate matchmaking, evade enforcement, exploit regional restrictions, or bypass security systems. No provider can honestly promise that VPN use is “100% safe from bans.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do VPNs create easier Warzone lobbies?

A VPN changes the apparent source region of your connection. That can alter which routes or matchmaking conditions you encounter, but it does not prove that Warzone will give you easier opponents. Matchmaking may depend on playlist, region, time of day, platform, input method, skill, connection quality, and Activision’s current systems.

Claims about “bot lobbies,” bypassing skill-based matchmaking, or guaranteed easy opponents are marketing claims rather than established performance facts. A distant server can simply give you higher ping and a worse competitive experience. If you experiment with regions, compare queue time and in-game telemetry, and never treat an easier lobby as a guaranteed result. See the distinction made in coverage from Tom’s Guide and the provider caveats in ExpressVPN’s Warzone guide.

Privacy and DDoS claims: what is accurate?

A VPN can hide your home’s public IP from peers and services that see the VPN endpoint. That may reduce the risk of direct IP targeting. It does not make you immune to denial-of-service attacks against the VPN provider, Activision’s servers, your router, or unrelated services. Say “reduces direct exposure of your home IP,” not “stops DDoS attacks.”

Likewise, a VPN can make traffic less identifiable to an ISP, but it cannot guarantee that throttling disappears. Privacy policies and “no logs” claims should be attributed to the provider and distinguished from independently audited findings.

What about free VPNs?

Free services may offer fewer locations, more congestion, lower support, data restrictions, or commercial privacy trade-offs. Proton VPN is an important exception to the simplistic claim that every free VPN is unsafe: it advertises a free plan with no data limit and no artificial speed limit. Even so, the available free servers may be too distant or busy for predictable Warzone play.

For competitive gaming, the sensible approach is to test a reputable free plan or a paid service during its refund period, measure actual matches, and keep it only if the route is better. Do not call a money-back guarantee a free trial unless the provider explicitly does so.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best VPN for Warzone?

NordVPN is the strongest overall candidate for PC players, ExpressVPN has the clearest PS5, Xbox, and router setup guidance, Surfshark suits multi-device households, Proton VPN fits privacy-first users, and PIA is an unlimited-device alternative. Your own ping and packet-loss results should decide the final choice.

Will a VPN lower my Warzone ping?

Sometimes, but not reliably. A VPN may improve an inefficient or congested ISP route, yet its extra server hop can increase ping. Compare several nearby servers with the VPN disconnected.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install a VPN directly on PS5 or Xbox?

Usually not through a standard provider app. Use a VPN-compatible router, Windows hotspot, or Ethernet connection sharing, then test NAT, voice chat, matchmaking, and ping.

Can a VPN give me bot lobbies?

There is no guaranteed result. Changing regions may alter matchmaking conditions, but easier-lobby claims are not established facts and distant servers can create worse latency.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with NordVPN on PC, ExpressVPN if console or router setup is your priority, Surfshark for many devices, Proton VPN for privacy-first testing, or PIA as an unlimited-device alternative. The winning VPN is the one that improves your route without raising ping, jitter, packet loss, NAT problems, or queue times. If it does not, your normal connection is the better gaming connection.
