For most self-managed OpenCart stores, the safest 2026 starting point is a VPS running a provider-supported Ubuntu LTS image, with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, SSD or NVMe storage, automated backups, and a data-center region close to your customers. Debian 12 is an equally valid alternative for administrators who prefer a leaner base system. OpenCart does not require Ubuntu or any other specific distribution: PHP compatibility, extensions, web-server support, recovery options, and your team’s Linux skills matter more than the distro label.
What OpenCart 4 actually needs
Choose the server only after checking the application requirements. OpenCart’s official requirements specify PHP 8.0 or later, a supported web server, and a MySQL-compatible database. The installer checks the PHP version, database connection, and required extensions before it proceeds.

|---|---|---|
| PHP | PHP 8.0 or newer | Confirm the provider image and repository can deliver a maintained PHP 8 release, not merely that the operating system is current. |
| Web server | Apache is recommended; Nginx and LiteSpeed/OpenLiteSpeed are supported | Use the server your administrator can secure and troubleshoot. Apache is the least-surprising choice for a first deployment. |
| Database | MySQL or MariaDB through MySQLi or PDO | Create a separate, non-root database user and database during setup. |
| PHP extensions | cURL, GD, Iconv, Mbstring, OpenSSL encryption, ZipArchive, and Zlib | Check every extension in the selected PHP package before pointing DNS at the store. |
| Storage and permissions | Writable configuration files during installation | Use SSD/NVMe storage and temporarily grant only the write permissions the installer needs, then tighten them after setup. |
See the official OpenCart system requirements for the current extension list and supported components. The repository’s INSTALL instructions also require a MySQL or MariaDB database with a non-root user.
Web-server choice
OpenCart’s documentation says, “When selecting a hosting service, an Apache server is recommended.” It also states that OpenCart runs on “LiteSpeed / OpenLiteSpeed (with LiteSpeed Cache) and Nginx.” That makes all three viable, but they are not interchangeable operationally:

Ubuntu or Debian for OpenCart?
Ubuntu LTS: the practical default
Ubuntu LTS is the easiest default for a self-managed OpenCart VPS. Major VPS catalogs expose Ubuntu images, and more deployment documentation assumes Ubuntu than any other distribution. Select the newest provider-supported LTS that remains in standard security maintenance, then verify that its repositories or approved third-party packages provide PHP 8 or newer with every OpenCart extension.
Ubuntu is not intrinsically faster than Debian for an online store. Its advantage is operational: familiar package names, broad panel support, and a larger pool of administrators who can diagnose common PHP, firewall, and web-server problems quickly.
Debian 12: a strong lean alternative
Debian 12 is a sound choice when you want a minimal, stable base and are comfortable assembling the web stack yourself. It is listed among the Linux images supported by DigitalOcean and among the operating systems supported by OpenPanel. OpenCart does not require Ubuntu, so Debian is fully valid when your provider or panel supports PHP 8 and the required extensions.
Choose Debian when your team already has Debian procedures, hardening guides, and upgrade testing. The time saved by using a familiar system is more valuable than a nominal distro preference.
AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux
RHEL-family distributions can work well when a control panel or operations team standardizes on them. OpenPanel lists AlmaLinux 9.2/9.4 and Rocky Linux 9.4 as supported operating systems. Before committing, verify PHP 8 or newer, all required extensions, the panel’s PHP selector, and the availability of compatible database and web-server packages.

How much VPS capacity does OpenCart need?
OpenCart publishes software prerequisites, not a universal CPU or RAM benchmark. A small production store that runs its web server and database on one machine should start evaluation around 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of RAM, with SSD or NVMe storage and enough free space for the database, product images, logs, backups, and operating-system updates. Treat that as a practical starting point, not a promise that every catalog or traffic pattern will perform identically.
CPU
Two vCPUs are a sensible floor for a real store because PHP requests, database work, image processing, scheduled jobs, and administration compete for CPU time. Shared CPU is economical for light and variable workloads. Move to dedicated CPU when checkout traffic, imports, search indexing, or cron jobs must remain responsive during sustained activity.
Memory
Four gigabytes gives a combined web-and-database server room for PHP workers, the database buffer pool, the operating system, and short bursts. More memory becomes important as the catalog, extensions, concurrent sessions, and cache footprint grow. OpenPanel lists 1 GB RAM and 15 GB storage as minimums, with 4 GB RAM and 50 GB storage recommended for the panel itself; those figures are panel guidance, not OpenCart requirements, and are another reason to avoid the smallest VPS tier for a production shop.
Storage
SSD or NVMe storage reduces latency for database reads, catalog-image operations, logs, and backups. Account for the application, database growth, uploaded images, temporary files, retained snapshots, and at least one recovery copy. Confirm whether the provider’s advertised SSD is local or network-attached and whether backup storage is billed separately.

When to separate the database
Keeping web and database services together is simpler and economical for a small store. Separate the database when memory pressure, sustained CPU use, high connection counts, imports, or reporting workloads interfere with checkout response times. Separation adds network, backup, and operational complexity, so base it on measurements rather than a preset traffic number.
What to compare when choosing a VPS provider
Do not choose solely by the monthly headline price. Compare the following dimensions for the region and plan you will actually deploy:
| Decision factor | Questions to answer | Why it affects OpenCart |
|---|---|---|
| Region and network | Is a data center close to customers, payment gateways, tax services, and other APIs? | Shorter network paths improve page, checkout, and API responsiveness. |
| CPU model and contention | Is the plan shared or dedicated CPU? What happens under sustained load? | Shared CPU is cheaper; dedicated CPU is safer for imports, cron work, and busy checkouts. |
| Storage | Is it SSD or NVMe, local or network attached, and how is I/O limited? | Database and image workloads are sensitive to storage latency and contention. |
| Backups and recovery | How often are snapshots taken, how long are they retained, and how is a restore performed? | A backup that cannot be restored quickly is not a recovery plan. |
| Manageability | Do you need a control panel, managed patching, or only SSH access? | Panels reduce routine work but add cost and another component to update. |
| OS and PHP lifecycle | Will the image receive security updates and provide PHP 8+ with OpenCart extensions? | A cheap image is unusable if its PHP branch or extensions are unavailable. |
| Bandwidth and total cost | What are transfer, IPv4, backup, panel-license, and support charges? | The invoice can exceed the advertised VPS price once production services are included. |
DigitalOcean as a self-managed reference point
DigitalOcean’s VPS documentation lists Ubuntu and Debian images, shared and dedicated CPU classes, and premium shared-CPU options with NVMe SSDs. Its page lists shared-CPU Droplets from $4 per month at the time of the cited information and describes dedicated-CPU classes for medium-to-high-traffic web servers and ecommerce workloads. Those are provider-listed prices and descriptions, not a performance guarantee; plans, regional availability, and prices can change, so confirm them when you order.
Use that page as a checklist rather than assuming a particular Droplet size is “the OpenCart plan.” Match the selected vCPU, memory, storage, transfer, backup, and region to your measured workload.
Managed OpenCart hosting or a self-managed VPS?
Choose managed service when
- No one on your team wants responsibility for Linux patching, firewall rules, PHP upgrades, backups, and incident response.
- You need a support contact for server-level failures rather than only application documentation.
- Your store’s revenue makes predictable operations more valuable than the lowest infrastructure bill.
OpenCart’s official system-requirements page names ScalaHosting as its official hosting partner. If you select a managed service, confirm exactly what “managed” includes: OS updates, PHP changes, malware response, backup retention, restore testing, staging, migration help, and control-panel licensing.

Choose self-managed VPS hosting when
- You can administer Linux over SSH and maintain the web server, database, PHP, firewall, and backups.
- You need root-level control over caching, queues, scheduled jobs, extensions, or deployment automation.
- You are willing to test updates on a staging copy and document recovery procedures.
Self-management can reduce the service premium, but the work does not disappear. Budget time for monitoring, security updates, restore drills, and troubleshooting after every major PHP or extension change.
Deployment checklist for an OpenCart VPS
The exact package commands vary by distribution and repository, but the sequence below keeps the failure-prone decisions in the right order.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the image and region. Choose Ubuntu LTS, Debian 12, AlmaLinux, or Rocky Linux according to your support matrix. Pick the region nearest customers and critical payment or fulfillment APIs.
- Create the VPS and a non-root administrator. Use SSH keys, disable routine root login where your provider permits it, and apply security updates before installing the application.
- Install the web stack. Install Apache, Nginx, or LiteSpeed/OpenLiteSpeed; install PHP 8+ and verify cURL, GD, Iconv, Mbstring, OpenSSL, ZipArchive, and Zlib are loaded. Configure PHP-FPM when your chosen web server requires it.
- Create the database. Provision MySQL or MariaDB and a dedicated database user with only the permissions needed by OpenCart. Do not use the database root account in the application configuration.
- Upload OpenCart and configure the virtual host. Point the document root at the correct public directory, enable HTTPS, and check URL-rewrite rules for your chosen web server.
- Run the installer. Supply the database name, dedicated user, password, and administrator credentials. The installer checks PHP, the database, and extensions before completing.
- Apply the post-install hardening. Delete the
installdirectory, move thestoragedirectory outside the web root where the installer supports it, choose a non-default administrator directory, and use strong unique credentials. - Test before launch. Place a test order, verify email delivery, payment and shipping integrations, image uploads, administration login, scheduled jobs, redirects, and backup restoration on a separate test target.
- Automate operations. Schedule database and file backups, security updates with a maintenance window, log rotation, certificate renewal, and monitoring for disk, memory, CPU, database errors, and failed jobs.
Follow the OpenCart installation guide for the supported post-install actions. The order matters: exposing an unprotected admin path or leaving the installer directory in place turns a successful installation into a security liability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security and recovery practices that matter more than the distro
Protect the administrator and application files
- Use a non-default admin directory and a unique, long administrator password.
- Remove the installer directory immediately after setup.
- Keep storage outside the public web root when the installation method allows it.
- Serve the storefront and administration over HTTPS and renew certificates automatically.
- Open only required firewall ports, normally SSH from trusted sources plus HTTPS and, if needed, HTTP for certificate redirects.
- Grant writable permissions only to directories and files that OpenCart or its installer genuinely needs.
Make backups recoverable
Use both database and file backups. Product images, extensions, configuration, and the database must be restorable together; a database-only copy cannot recreate a working catalog if uploaded assets are missing. Keep at least one backup outside the VPS failure domain, retain multiple points in time, and perform a test restore before relying on the plan.
Plan updates
Patch the operating system, PHP, database, web server, and OpenCart extensions on a staging copy first. Record the current PHP version and enabled extensions so a rollback does not accidentally change the runtime. Schedule production maintenance when order volume is low and monitor checkout immediately afterward.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
How to know when to scale
Scale from observed pressure, not from a generic visitor count. Track CPU saturation, memory and swap use, disk latency and free space, PHP-FPM queueing, database slow queries, checkout latency, error rates, and cron duration.
Vertical scaling
Increase vCPUs or RAM first when the store is otherwise simple and the database and web server still share one machine. Move from shared to dedicated CPU when sustained contention, imports, indexing, or checkout bursts compete with customer requests. Add faster or larger SSD/NVMe storage when I/O wait, database latency, or image processing is the limiting factor.
Architectural scaling
Separate the database when it consistently consumes the resources needed by PHP. Add a staging server when production updates are risky. For larger operations, isolate scheduled imports and search-index work so background jobs cannot starve checkout requests. Each split introduces another backup, network, firewall, and monitoring responsibility.
Budgeting the real monthly cost
Start with the VPS plan, then add every production dependency:
- Base compute and storage;
- Automated snapshots or separate backup storage;
- IPv4 addresses or other networking charges;
- Control-panel licensing, if used;
- Managed support or administration;
- Bandwidth or transfer overages;
- Monitoring, log retention, and off-site backup storage.
A provider’s $4-per-month entry price can be useful for a development or very small workload, but it does not establish that the tier has enough memory, CPU consistency, storage, backups, or support for a production store. Price the complete recovery and operations package instead of comparing only vCPU labels.

Recommended configurations by operator profile
| Operator profile | Distribution | Starting VPS profile | Web stack | Operating model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New self-managed store | Ubuntu LTS | 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, SSD/NVMe, automated backups | Apache with a supported PHP 8+ package | Use a panel only if it reduces administration risk |
| Debian-experienced administrator | Debian 12 | 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, SSD/NVMe, off-site backups | Apache or Nginx with explicitly tested rewrites | SSH and documented, repeatable configuration |
| RHEL-standardized team | AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux | At least the same practical starting capacity | Panel-supported PHP 8+ stack | Follow the organization’s existing patch and policy controls |
| Growing, busy catalog | Provider-supported LTS or standardized enterprise distro | Dedicated CPU or higher memory after measurement | Stack tuned for PHP-FPM, database, and cache workload | Consider a separate database and staging environment |
| Team without Linux operations | Provider-supported image selected by the managed host | Size for catalog and traffic, with verified backups | Managed, supported stack | Managed OpenCart hosting with explicit restore and patch scope |
Final buying checklist
- Does the image provide PHP 8.0 or newer and every OpenCart extension?
- Is the region close to customers and payment/API dependencies?
- Are the vCPUs shared or dedicated, and is the storage SSD or NVMe?
- Can you restore both database and files, and is at least one copy off the VPS?
- Are IPv4, transfer, panel, backup, and support costs included in your budget?
- Can your team patch, monitor, and troubleshoot the selected stack?
- Have you tested the OpenCart installer, HTTPS, rewrites, email, payment flow, and a restore before launch?
The distro is the easy part of the decision. A maintained Ubuntu LTS image is the best default for most self-managed stores; Debian 12 is a strong alternative; AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are sensible where an existing panel or operations standard requires them. In every case, select at least the practical 2-vCPU/4-GB starting point, verify the complete PHP stack, buy reliable backups, and scale after measuring the actual catalog and checkout workload.
