For most paid Discord bots in 2026, Hetzner offers the best value; DigitalOcean is the easiest starting point; Vultr and Linode/Akamai are stronger when you need more regions; and Oracle Cloud Always Free is the only genuinely free long-term option in this comparison. A small Linux VPS with 1 vCPU and 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM is sufficient for one or a few lightweight discord.py or discord.js bots. Add RAM when you also run a database, audio playback, large caches, or many processes.
Prices below are approximate figures reported by 2026 comparison sources, not provider-page quotations. Confirm the checkout price, bandwidth policy, IPv4 charge, storage, and region before paying.

Best VPS options at a glance
| Provider | Reported entry plan | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | About €3.29–€3.49/month for CX22: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM; one comparison lists 20 TB transfer | Lowest cost per CPU and RAM | Fewer locations than global-first providers; prices are not verified here |
| DigitalOcean | Reported as $4/month for 512 MB RAM, 10 GB SSD and 500 GB transfer, or $6/month for a 1 GB tier | Simple dashboard and beginner-friendly deployment | Comparable resources cost more than Hetzner |
| Vultr | Reported as $3.50/month for 1 vCPU, 512 MB, 10 GB SSD and 0.5 TB transfer; another source lists $2.50/month for a 512 MB IPv6-only plan | Many geographic choices; one review counts 32 locations across six continents | The cheapest listing may be IPv6-only, and 512 MB is tight for stacks with extra services |
| Linode/Akamai | From about $5/month for 1 GB RAM | Established regional coverage and a straightforward base VPS | Higher entry price than Hetzner; one source lists dedicated compute from $45/month |
| Oracle Cloud Always Free | Arm Ampere A1 allowance: 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory total per month; up to two 1-OCPU instances | Long-running bots with no monthly VPS charge | Home-region restriction, capacity/account risks, Arm compatibility, and strict entitlement enforcement |
The paid-provider figures disagree because they come from comparison articles rather than verified pricing pages. Treat them as budgeting ranges, not guaranteed invoices.
How much VPS capacity does a Discord bot need?
A bot spends most of its time waiting for gateway events, so CPU demand is usually low. A typical discord.py or discord.js process is expected to use well under 512 MB of RAM. That makes a 1-vCPU, 512 MB plan workable for one lightweight bot, provided the operating system is kept lean and no memory-heavy services share the machine.

Choose 512 MB when
- You run one small bot with modest command handling.
- The bot does not host a database, queue, browser automation, music transcoder, or large cache.
- You can tolerate little headroom for package updates and diagnostic tools.
Choose 1 GB when
- You run several bots or a bot with sizable Python or Node.js dependencies.
- You need PostgreSQL, Redis, SQLite plus large caches, or a web control panel on the same VPS.
- You want safer room for restarts, logging, and operating-system updates.
Choose 2 GB or more when
- Audio playback or transcoding runs continuously.
- You operate many bots, large guild caches, image processing, or other workers.
- You want the database and bot isolated from each other for reliability.
These are practical estimates rather than Discord-published requirements. Measure your process with free -h, top, or your provider’s metrics after a representative workload. Sustained swap use or an out-of-memory kill is a signal to resize; CPU percentages alone can miss a memory bottleneck.
Why Hetzner is the best paid value
Comparison sources place Hetzner’s CX22 around €3.29–€3.49 per month for 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM, with one source reporting 20 TB of transfer. On raw resources, that is substantially more headroom than the 512 MB entry plans listed elsewhere, making it a strong home for several lightweight bots, a small database, and monitoring.
Do not treat the quoted price as permanent. One 2026 source reports a 4-vCPU/8-GB offer at about €16 and a possible increase to about €21 from April 2026; that increase was not verified against an official price page. Check the current regional price and whether IPv4, backups, snapshots, and traffic are billed separately.
When to pick it
- You value maximum RAM and CPU per euro over a polished beginner workflow.
- Your users or database are near one of its available regions.
- You are comfortable administering a standard Linux server over SSH.
When not to pick it
If a required region is unavailable, or if your team needs a very guided deployment interface, the nominal saving may not offset operational friction. In that case, use DigitalOcean or a provider with a closer location.
DigitalOcean: the easiest first deployment
Two comparison sources give different entry prices: one lists a $4/month plan with 512 MB RAM, 10 GB SSD, and 500 GB transfer; another lists $6/month for 1 GB. The dashboard and common Ubuntu images are widely used by beginners, so creating a server, adding an SSH key, and attaching monitoring is generally straightforward.

At equal resources, the service is more expensive than Hetzner in the cited comparisons. That premium buys simplicity rather than special Discord performance. Confirm whether the displayed price includes public IPv4, backups, and the exact data-transfer allowance before selecting a plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBest fit
- Your first VPS and you prefer a clear web workflow.
- You need a documented region near an existing database or API.
- You plan to start at 1 GB and resize without rebuilding the bot.
Vultr: broad location choice
One review describes 32 locations across six continents. That can matter when your bot calls a nearby database, moderation API, or webhook endpoint, although Discord’s gateway itself is global and does not require game-server-style proximity.
Reported entry prices vary sharply: $3.50/month for 1 vCPU, 512 MB RAM, 10 GB SSD, and 0.5 TB transfer in one source, versus $2.50/month for a 512 MB IPv6-only plan in another. IPv6-only hosting can be unsuitable if an external service or administrator still requires IPv4, so inspect the network configuration rather than choosing solely by price.
Linode/Akamai: a conventional middle ground
Comparison material lists plans from about $5/month for 1 GB RAM and highlights many regions. The platform is a reasonable choice when a nearby location and predictable Linux VM matter more than the absolute lowest cost. One source says dedicated compute starts at $45/month after the Akamai acquisition; that tier is unnecessary for ordinary Discord bots and should not be confused with the entry shared-CPU plans.
Oracle Cloud Always Free: genuinely free, but conditional
Oracle’s own Always Free documentation lists an Ampere A1 allowance of 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory in total per month, equivalent to 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB hours. You can use it as one instance or split it into up to two instances with 1 OCPU each. The A1 shape is flexible, so you choose the OCPU and memory allocation at creation or resize it later.

Always Free compute is available only in the tenancy’s home region. A comparison source also lists two AMD virtual machines at 1/8 OCPU and 1 GB each, but availability and exact eligible shapes should be checked in the console.
Why the free tier needs caution
- The allowance was previously described as 4 OCPUs and 24 GB; community reports say the reduction to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB was enforced on August 18, 2026. Oracle’s documentation does not state that date, so treat it as a reported enforcement date rather than an official publication date.
- If a tenancy has more A1 instances than its Always Free entitlement permits, Oracle documentation says all A1 instances can be disabled and deleted after 30 days unless the account is upgraded to paid.
- Forum users report that some instances disabled after the change could not be restarted or resized even after moving within the entitlement. Those reports are anecdotal; one agent confirmed that 2 OCPUs and 12 GB remains within the stated allowance.
- Arm software support is a real consideration. A1 uses the aarch64 architecture, and the Discord libraries and native dependencies in your particular bot were not verified here. Confirm every package, binary, and audio tool supports Arm before migrating.
- Paid tenancies have a separate A1 allowance of 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours per month, according to Oracle’s price list; that is not the same as the Always Free entitlement.
Keep an external copy of source code, environment configuration, and database backups. Free does not mean recoverable if a tenancy is disabled or an instance is deleted.
Free trials are not permanent free hosting
Comparison material lists trial credits of $200 for DigitalOcean, $100 for Linode, and $100 for Vultr. Credits expire or require a qualifying account and payment method, so they are useful for testing deployment, not for promising an indefinitely free bot. Budget for the paid rate before putting a public bot on a trial account.
How to deploy a Discord bot on any Linux VPS
The provider changes, but the operational sequence is similar. The example below assumes a fresh Ubuntu server and a bot whose code is already in a private Git repository.
Recommended Free Tools
- Create the smallest suitable server. Select a current Ubuntu image, a region near your database or operators, and at least 1 GB RAM if you are unsure about dependency size. Add an SSH key instead of relying on a password.
- Connect and patch the system. Use
ssh user@server-ip, then runsudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade. Reboot if the kernel update requests it. - Create a non-root account. Add a deploy user, grant only the required administrative privileges, and disable direct root-password login in the SSH configuration. Keep your existing session open until a second login succeeds.
- Install the runtime. Install the supported Python version and
python3-venvfordiscord.py, or the supported Node.js LTS release fordiscord.js. Pin dependency versions inrequirements.txtorpackage-lock.json. - Upload the bot securely. Clone the repository over SSH or a deploy token. Store the bot token and database credentials in an environment file readable only by the service account; never commit them.
- Test interactively. Start the bot in a terminal, invite it with only the permissions it needs, and verify login, slash-command registration, reconnect behavior, and error logging.
- Run it under a supervisor. Create a
systemdservice or use a process manager. Configure automatic restart on failure, a dedicated working directory, and a restart delay so an API outage does not create a tight crash loop. - Restrict the network. Allow SSH only from trusted administrator addresses when possible. A gateway-only bot generally needs outbound HTTPS; expose no database port publicly. If a dashboard is required, put it behind HTTPS and authentication.
- Add backups and monitoring. Back up databases and configuration off the VPS. Monitor memory, disk, uptime, and restart counts. A backup on the same virtual disk does not protect against provider-level loss.
For updates, pull code into a release directory, install dependencies, run a quick syntax or startup check, then restart the service. Keep the previous release available so a bad dependency can be rolled back quickly.

Region, architecture, and bandwidth decisions
Region
Discord’s gateway is global, so latency to Discord is usually less important than latency to your database, cache, web API, or human administrators. Put the VPS close to those dependencies, and choose a provider with a second location if disaster recovery matters.
Arm versus x86
Oracle A1 is Arm-based. Pure Python and JavaScript code often has compatible alternatives, but native modules, prebuilt binaries, browser packages, and audio codecs may not. Build and test on the target architecture before moving production secrets or guild data.

Text commands consume little bandwidth. Audio, image processing, large logs, container images, and frequent backups consume much more. Compare the included transfer figure, SSD size, snapshot pricing, and whether overage is metered before selecting a plan. The 20 TB figure reported for Hetzner and the 0.5 TB figure reported for one Vultr plan are not directly comparable unless the provider defines transfer in the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security checklist for a public bot
- Use a dedicated Linux user and least-privilege Discord permissions.
- Keep the bot token outside source control and rotate it immediately if exposed.
- Patch the operating system and runtime regularly.
- Limit SSH with keys, disable password login after confirming key access, and use a firewall.
- Do not expose Redis, PostgreSQL, or a development dashboard to the public internet.
- Set log rotation so a command-spam incident cannot fill the disk.
- Back up configuration and data independently of the VPS account.
- Test a restore, not merely the existence of backup files.
Common failure modes and fixes
The bot exits with an out-of-memory error
Check free -h and service logs. Remove unnecessary workers, reduce cache sizes, add a small swap file as a safety net, or resize to 1–2 GB. Swap can prevent an abrupt crash but is not a substitute for adequate RAM.
The process works over SSH but stops when you disconnect
It is running in your shell rather than a supervisor. Move the start command into systemd or another process manager and enable it at boot.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Commands do not appear or permissions fail
Check that the application command scope and guild permissions are correct, then inspect startup logs for registration errors. Grant only the intents and permissions the bot actually uses.
An Arm deployment fails during dependency installation
Identify the failing native package, confirm an aarch64 build exists, or choose an x86 VPS. Do not assume a package that works on a desktop x86 system has an Arm wheel or binary.
Oracle instances disappear or cannot restart
Verify the tenancy’s current A1 allocation against the 2-OCPU/12-GB allowance, review console notices, and keep independent backups. Because community reports describe unrecoverable disabled instances, treat Always Free as a cost-saving option rather than your only copy of production data.
Which VPS should you choose?
| Your situation | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One small bot, lowest monthly bill | Hetzner entry plan if its region works | Reported 2 vCPU/4 GB for roughly €3.29–€3.49 |
| First VPS and minimal server experience | DigitalOcean 1 GB tier | Simpler workflow, at a higher reported cost |
| Users or databases spread globally | Vultr or Linode/Akamai | Broad location choices and conventional Linux instances |
| No VPS budget and tolerance for operational risk | Oracle Cloud Always Free A1 | 2 OCPUs/12 GB total, limited to the home region and subject to enforcement |
| Audio, many bots, or a database-heavy stack | At least 2 GB RAM, regardless of provider | Headroom matters more than the cheapest advertised tier |
For a normal production bot, start with a small paid x86 VPS unless Oracle’s Arm compatibility and account constraints are acceptable. The cheapest advertised number is not the cheapest dependable setup: include backups, IPv4, transfer, monitoring, and the time required to recover from a failed instance.
