RAT (the 7 Days to Die Server Manager) connects to your game server through its Telnet or Webconsole interface. To set it up, install RAT, enable one of those interfaces in serverconfig.xml, copy the same connection method, port and password into RAT, and install the required Bad Company Server Manager mod. Use 127.0.0.1 when both programs run on the same computer; use the server’s reachable IP address when RAT is running elsewhere.

What RAT Server Manager does
RAT provides a graphical control layer for a 7 Days to Die dedicated server. After it connects, you can manage server settings without repeatedly editing configuration files or typing every administrative command at a console. NomadSoft’s documentation describes automatic startup and restart, RAM monitoring, scheduled ZIP backups, restore workflows, MOTD management, timed server messages, custom commands, automatic configuration writing, and console or chat logging.

The dedicated server must be installed and able to start first. RAT then communicates with it through either Telnet or the Webconsole interface exposed by the game server. The connection details must match on both sides.
What you need before installing RAT
- A working 7 Days to Die dedicated server with access to its installation and save folders.
- Permission to edit the server’s
serverconfig.xml. - A port that the chosen Telnet or Webconsole service can use and a password you control.
- The Bad Company Server Manager mod by StompyNZ. RAT documentation states that this dependency is required for RAT to work.
- Alloc’s Server Fixes if you want RAT functions such as the web map and player private messages. The official 7 Days to Die server wiki strongly recommends installing it before setting up a server manager.
- Firewall and, for a remote installation, router access sufficient to make the selected service reachable.
RAT can administer a server on the same computer or a separately hosted machine. Some features are unavailable when the game server is remote, so decide where each component will run before you design your network rules.

Hardware baseline for the game server
The 7 Days to Die Help Center lists the following Windows baselines in its 2026 requirements. These figures describe the game server host, not a promise that every RAT feature will perform identically on every machine. A dedicated server can consume more RAM and CPU than a casual local game, particularly as the player count, world size and mod load increase.
| Profile | CPU | Memory | Dedicated graphics memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum Windows baseline | 2.8 GHz quad-core | 8 GB RAM | 2 GB | 20 GB |
| Recommended Windows baseline | 3.2 GHz quad-core | 12 GB RAM | 4 GB or more | 20 GB |
These are baseline figures from the Help Center, not a RAT-specific allocation guide. Leave operating-system overhead available, and watch the server’s actual memory use before choosing a RAM-threshold restart value. A threshold that is too low can cause unnecessary restarts; one that is too high may allow the operating system to become unstable first.
Choose a local or remote layout
| Decision area | RAT and server on one machine | RAT on another machine |
|---|---|---|
| Address entered in RAT | 127.0.0.1 |
The game server’s externally reachable or otherwise routable IP address |
| Network control | Usually limited to the host firewall | Requires firewall rules and, where applicable, router or provider port forwarding |
| Feature availability | Local communication gives RAT the fullest set of functions | Documentation warns that some features cannot work with a remotely hosted game server |
| Hardware and operating cost | One computer carries both workloads | RAT and the server can be separated, but two environments must be maintained |
| Backups and restores | RAT can write archives directly beside the server or to another local path you configure | Backup files and restore access depend on the permissions and storage available to the machine running the server |
| Patching and recovery | You control the operating system, game files and recovery process | A hosting provider may operate the machine; you remain responsible for the RAT connection and any provider-specific limits |
Local operation is the simplest first deployment because no public route is needed between RAT and the game server. A remote layout is useful when the server is hosted elsewhere, but test every feature you depend on rather than assuming that a successful connection makes every function available.
Install the game server and RAT
1. Confirm that the dedicated server starts without RAT
Install or update the 7 Days to Die dedicated server using the distribution method appropriate to your host. Start it once, let it create its files, and stop it cleanly. This initial run confirms that the executable, save directory and configuration path are valid before RAT is introduced.
2. Install RAT on the machine that will run the manager
Install 7D2D RAT and launch the manager. If RAT and the game server share a computer, keep the manager’s installation and permissions consistent with the account that can read the server files. If the server is remote, install RAT where you want to perform administration and record the remote host address you will use.
3. Back up the original configuration
Before changing connection settings, copy serverconfig.xml to a dated backup location. Keep the untouched copy until RAT has connected and the server has completed a normal restart. A small XML error can prevent the server from starting, and a known-good copy is the fastest recovery.

Enable Telnet or Webconsole in serverconfig.xml
The server must expose one connection method before RAT can do anything. Open the game server’s serverconfig.xml in a text editor while the server is stopped.
- Choose either Telnet or Webconsole. You do not need to configure both for the initial connection.
- Enable the selected interface using the corresponding setting in the configuration file.
- Assign a port that is free on the server host. Do not assume a universal default; the important requirement is that the value is available and reachable from the RAT machine.
- Set a strong, unique password. RAT must use this exact value, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Save the file without changing unrelated settings.
- Start the dedicated server and check its startup output for errors before attempting the RAT connection.
For a local installation, RAT should connect to 127.0.0.1. For a remote installation, enter the IP address that the RAT computer can actually route to. A private address may work across a site-to-site network or VPN; a server behind a home router generally needs an appropriate forwarding rule, while a hosted machine may require a provider firewall rule.
Expose only the selected management port to the networks that need it. A management interface open to the entire public internet increases the chance of password attacks. Restrict source addresses where your firewall or host permits it, use a strong password, and avoid reusing the value for other services.
Install RAT’s required mods
Bad Company Server Manager is required
RAT’s documentation says: “Bad Company Server Manager mod by StompyNZ is REQUIRED for RAT to work.” Install that mod in the game server’s normal mods location, following the version and folder layout required by your server build. Restart the server after installing it so the mod is loaded before RAT connects.

Alloc’s Server Fixes is strongly recommended
The official 7 Days to Die server wiki recommends Alloc’s Server Fixes before setting up a server manager. RAT uses it for functions including the web map and player private messages. Without it, the basic connection may still be possible, but those specific functions will not be available.
Do not treat an old mod package as proof of compatibility with every current game build. Check the mod’s own release information and the RAT release notes before upgrading a production server. The older 7D2D Server Manager setup wiki warns that development of that manager has ceased; its instructions should not be confused with current RAT documentation.

Enter the connection in RAT
- Open RAT’s connection or server profile screen.
- Select the same method you enabled in
serverconfig.xml: Telnet or Webconsole. - Enter the same port number.
- Enter the same password exactly.
- Set the host to
127.0.0.1for a local server, or to the remote server address for a separate host. - Enable auto-reconnect if the option is available. This allows RAT to recover from a temporary disconnect instead of requiring a manual connection after every restart.
- Press Connect and watch the status output for a successful handshake.
A successful connection means RAT can issue management requests through the selected interface. It does not automatically validate every optional mod feature, backup path or remote-network rule, so test those separately.
Configure RAT after the first connection
Automatic start and restart
Use RAT’s startup controls when you want the game server to launch with the manager or recover after a planned restart. Test one manual stop and start first. Confirm that the server reaches a playable state and that RAT reconnects before enabling unattended recovery.

RAT can monitor memory and restart when usage crosses a threshold. Set this only after observing normal operation. Include enough headroom for world saves, player joins and mod activity; otherwise a busy period can trigger a restart at the worst possible time. Tell players about the policy and avoid scheduling a threshold restart during an event or important build session.
Scheduled ZIP backups
Configure a schedule that matches how often your world changes. A backup is useful only if it completes, is stored somewhere separate from the live files and can be identified later. Use dated filenames or RAT’s own scheduling and retention controls where available. Check that the account running RAT can write to the destination and that the archive contains the saves and configuration you expect.
Restore workflow
Before restoring, stop the game server and preserve the current world directory as a separate copy. Select the intended ZIP archive in RAT’s restore workflow, verify the date, and restore to the server’s expected save location. Start the server only after the restore has completed, then confirm the world, player data and configuration. Keep the pre-restore copy until players have verified that the rollback is correct.
MOTD and timed messages
Use the MOTD for persistent information such as rules, restart windows or contact instructions. Timed messages are better for reminders that should appear during play. Keep intervals long enough that messages do not obscure normal chat, and test formatting with a player account before publishing a long announcement.

Custom commands
RAT can store custom commands for recurring administration. Add one command at a time, document its purpose, and test it on a non-critical server or during a maintenance window. A typo can produce an error or an unintended in-game effect, so do not paste an untested command into an automated schedule.
Automatic configuration writing
RAT’s update notes describe automatic configuration writing. Treat the generated file as authoritative after enabling this feature: make changes through the manager or keep a record of manual edits, because a later write can replace values changed directly in XML. Retain a dated backup before major setting changes.
Console and chat logs
Enable logging when you need an audit trail for commands, errors or player reports. Decide how long to retain logs and ensure the account running RAT can create and append to the chosen directory. Logs can grow over time, so include them in your storage checks without allowing them to consume the space reserved for world backups.
Remote-server considerations
RAT supports remote administration, and a hosted 7 Days to Die server is a supported deployment route. The connection still depends on three separate layers: the game server must listen on the configured interface, the host firewall must allow the port, and any router or hosting firewall between the two machines must pass it. If one layer blocks traffic, RAT may report a timeout even though the password is correct.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemote hosting changes who controls patching, hardware replacement and recovery. Confirm where RAT can write backups, whether you can access the server’s save directory, and how a provider handles reboots or mod updates. Documentation warns that some RAT features cannot work when the game server is remotely hosted; maintain a local fallback procedure for tasks that depend on direct filesystem access.
Troubleshooting connection and startup failures
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| RAT cannot connect locally | Confirm the server is running, the selected interface is enabled, the port and password match, and the host is 127.0.0.1. |
| RAT times out remotely | Verify the remote address, provider or router forwarding, host firewall rules and that the service is listening on the configured port. |
| Password rejected | Copy the value again from serverconfig.xml; check capitalization, punctuation and accidental spaces. |
| Server starts but RAT features are missing | Confirm Bad Company Server Manager is installed and loaded. Install Alloc’s Server Fixes for the web map and player private-message functions. |
| Server will not start after editing XML | Stop the server, restore the last known-good configuration copy, then reapply one change at a time. |
| Auto-reconnect never succeeds | Check that the server has finished restarting, the management port remains unchanged, and the RAT host can still reach the address. |
| Backups fail | Check the destination path, free storage, write permissions and whether the live server was stopped when the restore was attempted. |
| Remote features behave differently from local features | Consult the RAT documentation for remote limitations and use a local administrative method for functions that require direct server access. |
Version and compatibility cautions
A 2026 announcement for RAT 5 exists, but a complete current compatibility matrix and licensing terms were not exposed in the available documentation. Do not promise compatibility with a particular 7 Days to Die build until the current RAT release notes confirm it. Before upgrading, copy the server configuration and saves, check the RAT release notes, verify the required mod versions, and test the connection on a staging instance if the world is important.

Keep the distinction between current RAT instructions and the legacy 7D2D Server Manager wiki clear. The older manager’s development has ceased, so its commands, screenshots or assumptions may not describe RAT’s current interface.
Operational checklist
- The dedicated server starts normally without RAT.
serverconfig.xmlhas exactly one tested Telnet or Webconsole method enabled for the initial setup.- The port is free, allowed by the relevant firewall and not exposed more broadly than necessary.
- The RAT host, port, method and password exactly match the server configuration.
- Bad Company Server Manager is installed and loaded.
- Alloc’s Server Fixes is installed when web-map or private-message features are required.
- A manual RAT connection succeeds before automation is enabled.
- Automatic restart, RAM monitoring, messages, commands and logging have each been tested separately.
- A scheduled ZIP backup completes, can be located and has passed a test restore.
- You have a recovery path for remote-only features and a dated copy of the last known-good configuration.
