DigitalOcean is the best VPS for most first-time Hermes Agent users in 2026. Its official Hermes Agent 1-Click App, documented 2-vCPU/4GB example, setup wizard and gateway health commands provide the shortest route to a reliable always-on deployment. Experienced Linux administrators can often get better infrastructure value from Hetzner Cloud, but they must install and operate Hermes manually. A hosted-model installation can start on a small VPS; local model inference is a different hardware decision.

Your choice depends more on installation and operating work than on a single advertised monthly price. Provider plans, regions, VAT, backup options and 2026 price changes make static totals unreliable, so confirm the checkout total on the day you deploy.

For a single always-on gateway using hosted model APIs, 2 vCPUs and 4GB of RAM is the safest general starting point because it matches DigitalOcean’s official Hermes API example. A deployment guide presents 1GB RAM and roughly $5–6 per month as a minimum-oriented figure when no local LLM runs on the server, but that should be treated as a light-workload floor rather than a promise that every installation will fit comfortably.

Hermes is a long-running agent that can remember context, execute tools, run scheduled jobs and connect to services such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal and email. A cloud VM lets it continue working when your personal computer is shut down.

Hosted inference versus local inference
When Hermes sends model requests to a hosted provider, the VPS mainly runs the agent, gateway, integrations, browser or tool processes, logs and scheduled tasks. That is why a modest CPU-only machine can work. You do not need a GPU for this architecture.
Running a model locally changes the decision completely. Model files, inference memory, concurrency and thermal headroom become server requirements. The available deployment guidance does not establish a universal GPU, RAM or CPU size for local inference, so do not select a low-cost hosted-model plan and assume it will run a local model acceptably.

RAM is consumed by more than the agent process. Context history, Python processes, browser automation, messaging connectors, logs and temporary files all compete for memory. A 1GB machine may be viable for a light, hosted-model setup, but a 2-vCPU/4GB server leaves room for the gateway and ordinary operational bursts without immediately relying on swap.

Disk space and traffic also matter. Keep enough storage for the operating system, Hermes state, logs, browser downloads and backups. If your provider bills traffic or additional volumes separately, include those items in the deployment budget instead of comparing only the headline VM rate.

DigitalOcean: the easiest documented deployment
DigitalOcean publishes an official Hermes Agent Marketplace image. Its catalog identifies Hermes Agent 2026.9.14 and Python 3.12.3, and it documents both a control-panel deployment route and an API example. The image is installed for a dedicated hermes user rather than the account you use to administer the host.
Deploy the Marketplace image from the control panel
- Create or sign in to your DigitalOcean account and open the Droplet creation workflow.
- Choose the official Hermes Agent image from the Marketplace. Confirm the image name and version shown in the current catalog before creating the server.
- Select a plan with at least 2 vCPUs and 4GB RAM for the recommended starting point. Choose the region closest to your users or to the services Hermes must reach; the published API example uses SFO2, but availability and pricing can change.
- Configure SSH access, hostname and any optional backups or additional storage. Use an SSH key rather than relying on a password where possible.
- Create the Droplet and wait for the first-boot image configuration to finish.
- Connect over SSH as the provisioned account. On the first login, run
hermes setupto choose a model provider, enter credentials and optionally configure messaging integrations.
The setup wizard is the important advantage of this route: image creation, the dedicated user and the initial Hermes configuration are documented together instead of being separate troubleshooting projects.

Provision the documented API configuration
If you automate infrastructure, DigitalOcean’s example creates a 4GB Hermes Droplet with these values:

Complete model and gateway setup
- After
hermes setup, select the model provider you intend to use and enter its credential when prompted. - Run
hermes modelto inspect or adjust the active model configuration. - Configure Telegram, Discord or another supported channel only after the model responds locally; this separates credential problems from messaging problems.
- Run
hermes gateway setupto create the gateway service configuration. - Start it with
hermes gateway start. - Confirm the process with
hermes gateway status, then runhermes doctorfor the documented health checks.
Know where configuration and secrets live
Provider secrets are stored in /home/hermes/.hermes/.env. Model configuration is stored in /home/hermes/.hermes/config.yaml. Treat both as sensitive operational files: do not paste them into tickets, commit them to a repository or expose the dashboard publicly. When you change a provider key or model, make a secure backup of the active Hermes home directory and record which version of the configuration is live.
Hetzner Cloud: a value-oriented manual route
Hetzner is a strong option when you already administer Linux servers and want more control over location and infrastructure components. Its cloud servers are virtual machines available in Europe, the USA and Singapore. The console and API support server creation, scaling, primary IPs, snapshots, firewalls and volumes.

Provision a suitable server
- Open the current Hetzner Cloud calculator or console and select a server in the 2-vCPU/4GB class for a comparable starting point.
- Choose a location based on latency, data-residency needs and availability. The same server type can have different prices by location.
- Add an IPv4 address only if your integration or administration plan requires one; include it in the total rather than assuming it is free.
- Enable a firewall and configure SSH-key access before exposing services.
- Add a volume or snapshot policy if Hermes state, browser artifacts or backups need storage beyond the boot disk.
- Provision the VM through the console or API, apply the current operating-system updates and follow Hermes’ current Linux installation instructions over SSH.
Unlike the Marketplace route, this process does not install Hermes for you. You are responsible for the operating system, package dependencies, service startup, firewall rules and upgrades. Once Hermes is installed, the same application-level commands apply: hermes setup, hermes doctor, hermes gateway setup, hermes gateway start and hermes gateway status.
Understand Hetzner’s billing model
Hetzner’s API exposes hourly and monthly prices for each server type and location; the lower of the applicable hourly or monthly amount is used for the server’s usage. The response includes net and gross prices, included traffic and server-backup pricing. Seven backup slots are documented at 20% of the server price. IPv4, extra volumes, snapshots and traffic can alter the total.

A 2026 price adjustment means older tutorials may show obsolete plan names or rates. Build the bill from the live calculator, then re-check it whenever you change location, server generation, backup policy or storage.
Pricing: compare the complete deployment, not a headline VPS rate
The often-quoted $5–6 monthly figure applies to a guide-level small VPS recommendation for a hosted-model installation without a local LLM. It is not a universal Hermes fee, an uptime guarantee or a fixed provider price.
- Compute: the VM’s vCPU and RAM plan, billed hourly, monthly or through the provider’s chosen billing model.
- Region: location can change the rate, available plan generations and network performance.
- Public networking: IPv4 and traffic allowances may be separate line items.
- Resilience: backups, snapshots and additional volumes increase cost but reduce recovery risk.
- Model usage: hosted model API charges are separate from the VPS bill.
- Local inference: GPU-capable hardware can move the project into a substantially different cost category.
For a fair comparison, write down the same CPU/RAM class, region, public-IP requirement, backup policy, storage size and expected traffic for both providers, then compare the resulting current checkout totals.

Restrict the dashboard
Keep the Hermes dashboard private. Limit access with the provider firewall and SSH administration, or place it behind an access method that is not reachable from the public internet. A private dashboard reduces the chance that an exposed control surface becomes a path to your provider credentials or tools.

Protect credentials and state
- Store model and messaging credentials only in the intended Hermes configuration files.
- Do not place
/home/hermes/.hermes/.envin a public repository or paste it into chat logs. - Back up the active Hermes home directory, including configuration and state, before upgrades.
- Document which integrations are enabled so a restore does not silently omit a channel.
Verify service health after every reboot
- Reconnect over SSH after the reboot completes.
- Run
hermes doctorand inspecthermes gateway status. - If the gateway is stopped, run
hermes gateway startand check its status again. - Send one real test message through Telegram or Discord and confirm delivery in both directions.
- Investigate credentials, network access and service startup order before declaring the host recovered.
A successful process check alone is not enough: the real delivery test verifies that the model, gateway, connector credentials and outbound network path all work together.

The VPS runs out of memory
Move from a minimum-oriented 1GB plan to the 2-vCPU/4GB baseline, then observe memory while browser tools, scheduled jobs and connectors are active. Remove unnecessary services and retain only the integrations you use. Do not treat swap as a substitute for adequate RAM when the agent is persistently busy.
The gateway is installed but not responding
Run hermes gateway status and hermes doctor. If setup was never completed, rerun hermes setup; if the gateway service was not created, run hermes gateway setup and then hermes gateway start. Check that the model credential in /home/hermes/.hermes/.env is present and that the selected model is reflected in /home/hermes/.hermes/config.yaml.
Messages do not arrive after a reboot
First verify gateway status, then send a real Telegram or Discord test. If the process is running but delivery fails, check connector credentials and outbound network rules. If the process is not running, correct the gateway startup configuration and repeat the reboot test before relying on scheduled jobs.
The provider bill is higher than an old tutorial
Recalculate using the current region and server generation. Add up IPv4, backups, snapshots, volumes and traffic rather than comparing only the base server figure. Hetzner’s location-sensitive pricing and 2026 adjustments, and DigitalOcean’s resource-based billing, both make copied historical totals unreliable.

Choose DigitalOcean when
- You want an official Hermes image rather than a manual Linux installation.
- You prefer a single documented path from account creation to
hermes setup. - You want provider-specific API fields and health commands you can hand to a less experienced operator.
- You are comfortable checking the current Droplet total instead of depending on a fixed monthly quote.
Choose Hetzner when
- You are comfortable with SSH, Linux updates, firewall configuration and service supervision.
- You need to choose among European, US or Singapore locations.
- You want to compose compute, IP, storage, snapshot and backup components yourself.
- You will recalculate the location-specific price after the 2026 plan changes.
Choose neither small VPS without redesigning the plan when
- You intend to run a large local model and have not sized its GPU and memory requirements.
- You need high concurrency but have not measured CPU, RAM, storage and network usage.
- You cannot keep the dashboard private, protect provider keys or test recovery after a reboot.
Final recommendation
Start with DigitalOcean’s Hermes Agent 1-Click App on a 2-vCPU/4GB Droplet if your priority is a predictable setup and documented operations. Select Hetzner Cloud instead when manual installation is acceptable and current location-based pricing or infrastructure flexibility matters more than a turnkey image. In either case, use hosted inference unless you have separately planned local-model hardware, and treat private access, protected secrets, backups and post-reboot message delivery as part of the deployment—not optional cleanup.
