The right choice depends on your workload, required region, CPU model, IPv4 and backup needs, and how much server administration you want to handle. Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode (now marketed as Akamai Cloud), Contabo, OVHcloud and Kamatera form a practical shortlist, but their advertised entry prices are not directly comparable.
This guide separates verified characteristics from date-sensitive third-party price reports, explains what each provider is best suited to, and gives you a method for calculating the real monthly cost before you deploy.

Quick verdict: choose by workload, not by a universal ranking
| Best fit | Provider to investigate first | Why it belongs on the shortlist | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost general-purpose instance | Vultr | Cloud Compute is advertised from $2.50 per month and has a broad location footprint. | A third-party tracker put the effective entry price with IPv4 at $3.50 per month; bandwidth overages were reported at $0.01 per GB. |
| Price-conscious self-hosting | Hetzner | European entry plans remain aggressively priced, and the service is aimed at customers comfortable managing Linux themselves. | 2026 price increases materially changed the economics, especially for dedicated-vCPU plans. Confirm the current regional price before ordering. |
| Developer workflow and documentation | DigitalOcean | Droplets, APIs and tutorials are commonly described as developer-friendly, with simple published tiers. | Third-party reports are not official pricing; dedicated-CPU plans cost substantially more than shared Droplets. |
| Predictable mainstream alternative | Linode/Akamai Cloud | Long-established shared plans and a conventional control panel make it a familiar option for Linux deployments. | Linode now operates under the Akamai Cloud brand. Third-party reports disagree on some plan prices. |
| Highly configurable infrastructure | Kamatera | Compute, storage and other components can be configured separately. | Add-ons are extra, and a current price was not verified. |
| Large-provider alternatives | OVHcloud or Contabo | Both appear frequently in 2026 provider comparisons and offer additional regional and capacity choices. | Current prices and the comparative performance claims available for this guide were not verified at source level. |
Use the table as a starting point rather than a final ranking. A $2.50 plan can become more expensive than a $5 plan after IPv4, backups, storage, snapshots and bandwidth are added.
What a Linux VPS actually provides
A virtual private server is a rented virtual machine running on a physical host in a data center. The provider supplies the hardware, hypervisor, network connection and facility; you select an operating-system image and administer the resulting Linux server. You normally receive root or administrator access, a virtual CPU allocation, memory, storage and a network allowance.

Unlike shared web hosting, a VPS gives you an isolated operating-system environment in which you can install packages, run services and change system settings. Unlike a dedicated server, the underlying hardware is shared unless you specifically buy a dedicated-vCPU tier. That distinction affects noisy-neighbor risk, CPU consistency and price.
Shared vCPU, dedicated vCPU and high-frequency tiers
- Shared vCPU: your virtual machine shares physical CPU capacity with other customers. It is usually the cheapest choice for websites, development environments, VPN endpoints and light self-hosted services.
- Dedicated vCPU: the provider reserves physical CPU capacity for your instance. It is more suitable for sustained builds, databases, game servers or other workloads where CPU consistency matters, but it costs considerably more than entry plans.
- High-frequency or NVMe tiers: these use faster CPU clocks and/or faster local storage. They can reduce build and database latency, but the premium only pays off when your workload is actually CPU- or I/O-bound.
Memory, storage type and network limits can bottleneck a machine before its advertised vCPU count does. Treat the plan name as a bundle of constraints, not as a performance benchmark.
2026 pricing: why the advertised number is not your bill
All price figures below come from date-sensitive third-party reports rather than official provider pricing pages. They should be used for comparison only and rechecked on the provider’s checkout page for your chosen region, billing period and operating-system image.
| Provider | Reported entry figure | What the report says | What remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hetzner | €5.99/month for CX23 in the EU | An October 2026 tracker listed this price. | It is a third-party figure tied to one region and plan; prices changed during 2026. |
| DigitalOcean | $4/month | Trackers reported Droplet tiers of $4, $6, $12, $24 and $48, with flat global pricing. | Official regional billing, IPv4, backups and dedicated-CPU rates must be confirmed. |
| Vultr | $2.50/month advertised; $3.50/month with IPv4 reported | The lower figure is the advertised Cloud Compute entry point. A tracker reported $3.50 as the effective IPv4 entry price and $0.01/GB for bandwidth overage. | The exact allowance and billing treatment depend on the selected plan and location. |
| Linode/Akamai Cloud | $5 to $5.47/month | Different trackers listed both starting figures. | A 4 GB shared plan was variously reported at about $24 and $26.28 monthly. |
| Contabo | Not stated | Comparison guides include it as a price-led provider. | No current price was verified for this guide. |
| OVHcloud | Not stated | Frequently included in provider shortlists. | No current price was verified for this guide. |
| Kamatera | Not stated | Plans are configurable and components can be added separately. | No current price was verified for this guide. |
Costs that commonly sit outside the headline plan
- IPv4: some providers charge separately, while the headline price may assume IPv6-only networking.
- Backups and snapshots: these are often optional recurring services rather than part of the compute price.
- Additional storage: block volumes, extra disks and larger boot volumes can change the total substantially.
- Bandwidth overage: a low monthly transfer allowance can make a cheap instance expensive for media, downloads or public mirrors.
- Dedicated CPU: moving from shared to dedicated vCPU is a tier change, not a small add-on.
- Managed services: control panels, managed databases, monitoring and support packages may be billed separately.
Before ordering, write down the full monthly requirement: compute, IPv4 addresses, storage, backups, transfer, snapshots and any managed service. Compare that total, not the smallest number in a marketing panel.
Provider-by-provider comparison
Hetzner: strong value for experienced Linux administrators
Hetzner is most compelling when you are comfortable provisioning and securing a server yourself and your users are near one of its available regions. Its 2026 entry pricing remained attractive in European reports, but older guides are unreliable because the company raised prices during the year.
Reports describe an increase for all customers on April 1, 2026, followed by another increase affecting new orders and resizes on June 15. The largest reported change was for the dedicated-vCPU CCX13 plan, cited as rising from €15.99 to €42.99—roughly 169 percent. Those numbers are third-party figures, not a substitute for the current price list.

An October 2026 tracker listed the CX23 at €5.99 per month in the EU. That is useful as a time-and-region snapshot, not a global guarantee. If you need a dedicated CPU, recalculate from the current plan selector rather than relying on a pre-2026 review.
- Good match: self-hosted applications, personal services, development servers and cost-sensitive workloads in or near European regions.
- Watch: administration responsibility, regional latency, backup configuration and the post-increase price of dedicated tiers.
- Decision test: choose it when you can maintain Linux yourself and the selected data center gives acceptable latency to your users.
DigitalOcean: the clearest developer-oriented workflow
DigitalOcean’s Droplets are frequently characterized as developer-friendly. The appeal is a straightforward product model, extensive documentation and an API-oriented workflow that fits infrastructure-as-code and repeatable deployments.
Third-party trackers reported Droplets starting at $4 per month, followed by $6, $12, $24 and $48 tiers, with flat global pricing across regions. Dedicated-CPU plans are reported at a much higher price point. Because these figures are not official quotations, check the live calculator for the exact memory, storage, transfer and IPv4 allocation.
- Good match: teams that value tutorials, API access and a simple path from a prototype to several repeatable servers.
- Watch: backups, managed databases, additional volumes and dedicated CPU can move the monthly total well above the entry Droplet.
- Decision test: select it when operational clarity and developer tooling matter more than obtaining the absolute lowest compute price.
Vultr: low entry price with careful network-cost checking
Vultr advertises Cloud Compute from $2.50 per month. A third-party tracker reported that the effective IPv4 entry price was $3.50 per month and that bandwidth overage was $0.01 per GB. This difference illustrates why IPv4 and transfer must be included in your estimate.

Those are appropriate when faster CPU or a different resource profile justifies the premium; they are not automatically better for a lightly loaded blog or test machine.
- Good match: small experiments, geographically distributed endpoints and workloads that fit within the included transfer allowance.
- Watch: IPv4 pricing, transfer overage and the cost jump to High Frequency or Optimized plans.
- Decision test: calculate peak monthly transfer first. A server serving downloads or video assets can outgrow the entry plan quickly.
Linode, now Akamai Cloud: a conventional all-rounder
Linode now operates under the Akamai Cloud brand. You may still see “Linode” in older tutorials, API examples and community discussions, so verify that a guide’s screen labels match the current control panel.

Third-party trackers listed starting prices of $5 and $5.47 per month. For a 4 GB shared plan, reports conflicted between approximately $24 and $26.28 monthly. The disagreement is a warning to verify the exact plan, billing period and region rather than copying a figure from a comparison article.
- Good match: conventional Linux hosting, small production services and users who want a mature provider without assembling every component à la carte.
- Watch: naming changes, conflicting third-party prices and the difference between shared and dedicated CPU offerings.
- Decision test: compare the current Akamai Cloud plan’s included transfer, storage and backup options with the equivalent Droplet or Cloud Compute plan.
Contabo: investigate the capacity-to-price trade-off
Contabo appears in 2026 comparison guides as a price-led option. One search summary characterized it as offering weaker performance and support than some competitors, but that description was not verified at source level. Treat it as a hypothesis to test, not an established benchmark result.

OVHcloud: a broad-provider alternative requiring plan-level checking
OVHcloud is repeatedly named alongside the other major Linux VPS providers. The available evidence here does not establish a current price or a universal performance ranking, so evaluate the exact VPS family and region you intend to use.
Check whether the plan includes IPv4, how transfer is measured, what backup and snapshot options cost, and whether the support level matches your incident-response needs. Compare like-for-like memory, storage and CPU allocation rather than comparing product names.
Kamatera: flexible configuration with add-on arithmetic
Kamatera is described as configurable, allowing customers to assemble compute and related resources. That flexibility can be useful when a fixed bundle wastes memory or storage, but it also makes the headline price less informative.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right VPS for your workload
1. Define the workload and its failure tolerance
List every service the server will run: web application, database, game server, CI runner, VPN, monitoring, file storage or development environment. Record whether a few minutes of downtime is acceptable, whether data can be rebuilt, and whether traffic is predictable.
- Stateless test or development server: prioritize low cost, API access and easy rebuilds.
- Database or transactional application: prioritize memory, storage latency, backups and predictable CPU performance.
- Public download or media service: prioritize transfer allowance and overage pricing before compute.
- Latency-sensitive service: choose the data center closest to the majority of users, then verify network performance from that region.
- Self-hosted personal services: prioritize IPv4 availability, security controls, backup simplicity and an administration model you can maintain.
2. Set a realistic resource floor
Estimate memory first for databases and multi-service stacks, then CPU, storage and transfer. Leave headroom for operating-system updates, logs, caches and traffic spikes. A server that runs at 90 percent memory utilization immediately after deployment has no safe upgrade buffer.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not equate vCPU count with guaranteed performance. Shared vCPUs can be suitable for bursty tasks; dedicated vCPUs are justified when sustained CPU consistency is part of the requirement.
3. Compare regions, not just provider names
Choose two or three candidate data centers and measure latency from your actual user locations. A cheaper server on another continent can produce a slower application and higher support burden. Confirm that the provider offers the desired Linux image, IPv4 option and storage type in that region.
4. Calculate the all-in monthly cost
Use this formula:
Monthly total = compute + IPv4 + storage volumes + backups/snapshots + transfer overage + managed services.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Run a low-traffic and a peak-traffic scenario. For each provider, record which components are recurring, which are one-time charges and which are usage-based. Keep the date and region beside every quoted number because 2026 prices changed during the year.

5. Match the control plane to your skills
A highly self-managed provider can be excellent value if you already know Linux hardening, backups, DNS and incident recovery. A developer-oriented platform may cost more but reduce the time required to deploy and automate. Neither model is universally superior; the operational hours saved can outweigh a small compute-price difference.
Deployment checklist after you order
- Select a supported Linux image and region. Use a distribution version you can patch and whose packages your application supports.
- Upload an SSH key before first login. Generate one locally with
ssh-keygen -t ed25519, store the private key securely and avoid sharing it. - Create a non-root administrator. Use
sudofor privileged commands and disable password authentication after confirming key-based login works. - Patch the operating system. On Debian or Ubuntu, run
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade; use the equivalent package commands for your distribution. - Restrict the firewall. Allow SSH from trusted source addresses where practical, then open only the application ports you need. For UFW, a basic sequence is
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH, followed by the required web or application ports andsudo ufw enable. - Configure time, logs and automatic security updates. Incorrect time complicates certificates and incident review; uncontrolled logs can fill a small disk.
- Set up backups before production traffic. A snapshot is not the same as an application-consistent backup. Test restoring files and, if relevant, the database.
- Point DNS only after testing. Verify the service locally, install TLS, then lower the DNS time-to-live before a planned migration.
- Monitor the constraints you paid for. Track memory pressure, disk usage, CPU steal time, transfer consumption, failed logins and backup success.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the cheapest advertised plan
The smallest price may omit IPv4, backups or adequate transfer. Compare a complete configuration and include likely growth rather than choosing a plan that is already near its limits.
Ignoring the 2026 Hetzner changes
Articles written before April or June 2026 can materially understate Hetzner’s current cost, particularly for dedicated-vCPU capacity. Recheck every older recommendation before relying on it.
Assuming a provider’s global price means identical service everywhere
Flat pricing does not remove differences in latency, available images, stock, storage options or local network paths. Test the region that serves your users.
Running production without a restore test
A backup policy that has never been restored is an assumption. Restore to a separate instance, document the steps and measure how long recovery takes.
Overbuying dedicated CPU
Dedicated CPU is valuable for sustained or latency-sensitive workloads, but a lightly used personal server may gain more from memory, storage or backups. Measure utilization before upgrading.
A practical decision framework
- Need the lowest entry cost and can tolerate usage-based network charges? Start with Vultr, then price IPv4 and transfer for your expected traffic.
- Need low-cost self-managed capacity in Europe? Evaluate Hetzner’s current regional plans, including the post-2026 increases and dedicated-vCPU pricing.
- Need a polished developer workflow and extensive documentation? Compare DigitalOcean’s complete Droplet cost with alternatives after adding backups and storage.
- Want a familiar all-round Linux provider? Compare the current Akamai Cloud offering with equivalent shared plans from DigitalOcean and Vultr, using identical memory, disk and transfer assumptions.
- Need unusual combinations of CPU, memory and storage? Price a Kamatera configuration component by component, then compare it with a bundled plan.
- Considering Contabo or OVHcloud? Validate the specific plan’s performance, support expectations, region and included networking instead of relying on a generic provider ranking.
Finally, verify the live official pricing page immediately before payment. Third-party figures in this article are useful for finding candidates, but they are not contractual prices and may omit the exact extras your workload requires.
