The best VRR TV depends on what you connect: PS5 needs HDMI Forum VRR, while Xbox Series X|S can use HDMI Forum VRR or FreeSync, and PC compatibility depends on your graphics card. For 4K console gaming, look for reliable 4K/120Hz support; a powerful PC can make use of 144Hz or 165Hz modes. These 2026 picks offer useful starting points, but check the exact size, regional model suffix, ports and firmware before buying.
What VRR does—and what it does not
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible TV adjust its refresh rate to follow a game’s changing frame rate. That can reduce visible screen tearing and make uneven frame delivery look smoother. It is not a substitute for low input lag, clear motion handling or an HDR and panel choice suited to your room. RTINGS explains the basic function in its TV VRR testing guide.
VRR is not a perfect fix: RTINGS cautions that it may not eliminate all tearing and can sometimes increase input lag. Some TVs also disable local dimming while VRR is active, so check model-specific test results and settings rather than relying on a feature badge alone. See the RTINGS VRR test methodology for how behavior can vary.
Match the VRR format to your device
- PS5: Look for HDMI Forum VRR. RTINGS notes that PS5 support arrived in a firmware update in April 2022; FreeSync alone does not establish PS5 VRR compatibility. See RTINGS’ PS5 TV guide.
- Xbox Series X|S: Xbox supports HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync, giving it more possible compatibility routes than PS5. Confirm the specific TV’s tested support. See RTINGS’ Xbox TV guide and its VRR testing guide.
- PC: Check compatibility with the graphics card and the resolution/refresh mode you intend to use. Radeon owners should check FreeSync support; NVIDIA owners should look for G-SYNC Compatible or Adaptive Sync support and verify that it works at the desired mode. A broad badge is not proof of every combination. See RTINGS’ PC gaming TV guide.
Do not compare only the advertised maximum rate. RTINGS tests VRR ranges at 4K and 1080p, and a TV’s range can differ by resolution. Low-frame-rate compensation may extend operation below the nominal minimum, but actual behavior is model-specific; consult the VRR test results.

VRR TV recommendations for Xbox, PS5 and PC
These are examples identified in 2026 independent buying guides, not universal winners for every screen size, region or price. The listed specifications describe reported model capabilities; they do not guarantee that every HDMI input supports every top mode. Verify the configuration you plan to buy.
| TV | Reported gaming features | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung S95H OLED | RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1 inputs, VRR and up to 4K/165Hz, including PS5’s 4K/120Hz output. What Hi-Fi lists four 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports and 4K/165Hz, 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. Panel type varies by size: What Hi-Fi identifies the 65-inch as QD-OLED and the 83-inch variant as W-OLED. | High-end PS5/PS5 Pro and multi-device choice: RTINGS names it its best tested PS5/PS5 Pro TV. Check the exact size because panel details are not uniform. Sources: RTINGS and What Hi-Fi. |
| LG C6 OLED (2026) | RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR and up to 4K/165Hz. | Upper-mid-range option for Xbox and PC. The rate above 120Hz is chiefly useful with a PC capable of outputting higher frame rates; consoles top out at 120Hz in the cited guidance. Source: RTINGS. |
| LG B5 OLED | RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K/120Hz and VRR. | Value-oriented OLED for a dimmer room. RTINGS says reflections can be an issue in bright rooms, making glare control important. Source: RTINGS. |
| TCL QM7K Mini LED | RTINGS reports 4K/144Hz, VRR, low input lag and Dolby Vision support. | Non-OLED alternative for gamers who want a higher refresh ceiling. RTINGS notes motion is not as clear as on the OLED examples and some minor blur trails are visible, so the refresh-rate number alone does not tell the whole story. Source: RTINGS. |
How to choose between these TVs
For PS5 or PS5 Pro
Prioritize HDMI Forum VRR and 4K/120Hz support. The Samsung S95H is RTINGS’ high-end tested pick in its 2026 PS5 guide; the listed LG and TCL examples are alternatives to assess against your budget, room and preferred panel type. Confirm the exact model and input behavior before purchase.

For Xbox Series X|S
Xbox can use either HDMI Forum VRR or FreeSync, but check which route is actually supported by the TV. The LG C6 pairs a 4K/165Hz ceiling with four reported HDMI 2.1 ports; the B5 offers 4K/120Hz, and the TCL QM7K trades OLED-like motion clarity for a Mini LED option. Those differences matter more than selecting a set solely because its headline refresh figure is largest.
For a gaming PC
Match VRR support to your GPU, then check the mode you will play at. A PC with enough graphics performance can benefit from 4K/144Hz or 4K/165Hz, while those ceilings offer no advantage if your game and hardware cannot deliver higher frame rates. Confirm VRR range at your target resolution, input lag and motion clarity in independent model tests. RTINGS’ PC gaming TV guide discusses high-refresh TVs and graphics-card compatibility.

- Identify the exact model. Compare the full model suffix, screen size and region; panel type and port behavior can vary across configurations.
- Confirm the correct VRR standard. HDMI Forum VRR is the relevant compatibility check for PS5; for Xbox, check HDMI Forum VRR or FreeSync; on PC, verify FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible/Adaptive Sync for your GPU.
- Verify the resolution and refresh mode. Look for tested support at your intended resolution, not just a maximum refresh figure that may apply at a different mode.
- Check VRR range and gaming behavior. Review minimum and maximum tested rates, low-frame-rate compensation, input lag, motion clarity and whether local dimming remains available.
- Match the panel and room. Consider reflections and room brightness as well as OLED versus Mini LED motion characteristics.
- Check current firmware and availability. Recommendations and stock change; confirm the set is available in your market and supports the required features with its current software.
