The simplest way to play many classic Nintendo games on Switch 2 is through Nintendo Switch Online: the standard membership includes curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries, while the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy. Expansion Pack members can also access a curated GameCube library on Switch 2. These are selected catalogs, not complete archives; for a particular game, check whether it is listed or available separately.

How can you play old Nintendo games on Switch 2?

There are two main routes: play games in the Nintendo Classics apps included with Nintendo Switch Online, or find a specific older game as a separate eShop release or in a packaged collection. Which route works depends on the title. Nintendo says classic games from Nintendo and other publishers appear on newer platforms through Nintendo Classics, Nintendo eShop, or packaged collections, but availability and Switch 2 compatibility vary by game.

Route What it offers Requirements and limits Best suited to
Nintendo Switch Online Curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries Active membership on the Nintendo Account accessing the games; download the relevant library app Players focused on these systems who are comfortable with subscription access
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Standard-tier libraries plus curated Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy libraries Active Expansion Pack membership; Virtual Boy also requires an accessory and has regional limits Players looking for additional systems, including N64 and GBA
GameCube Classics on Switch 2 A curated GameCube library, including Nintendo examples The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II Requires Switch 2 and Expansion Pack membership; the GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2 Players seeking the GameCube games included in the service
Separate releases or packaged collections Some older games sold individually or in publisher collections Check each title’s current listing and Switch 2 compatibility Players searching for a specific game not included in the subscription libraries

Nintendo’s Classic Games Library page shows current catalog and membership distinctions. Check the relevant regional page because catalogs and availability can change.

Which Nintendo Switch Online tier includes each classic system?

Standard Nintendo Switch Online

The standard membership covers Nintendo’s curated NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries. A library’s system name does not mean that every game originally released for that console is included. Check Nintendo’s current listing for the specific title you want.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

The Expansion Pack includes the standard-tier libraries and adds curated Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy collections. Virtual Boy play has an additional accessory requirement, and Nintendo notes regional limits. See Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information for service details.

GameCube Classics on Switch 2

The GameCube Classics collection is available only on Switch 2 and requires an Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and SOULCALIBUR II as examples; that does not mean every GameCube release is in the library. Nintendo also states that the GameCube controller is optional and compatible only with Switch 2.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to play classic games?

You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to access games in the Nintendo Classics libraries. The Nintendo Account accessing the games must have the appropriate membership; a subscription on another account on the same console does not satisfy that requirement. Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ says games can be played offline after download, but membership must be verified online at least once every seven days.

This requirement applies to the Nintendo Classics service, not every older game on Switch 2. Separate eShop releases and packaged collections are other possible routes; check the individual product listing for its purchase and compatibility details.

How to download a Nintendo Classics library

  1. Open the Nintendo Switch Online area on the console.
  2. Choose Nintendo Classics, then select the system library you want.
  3. Download that library’s software through Nintendo eShop.
  4. Open the app using the Nintendo Account with the appropriate active membership.

Nintendo’s access guide describes the app and download process. For Virtual Boy, check its region and accessory requirements before choosing that library.

Can you use original-style controllers on Switch 2?

Classic controllers are optional, not a general requirement. They can provide a more familiar layout for particular games, but confirm compatibility for the system and game you plan to play. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance lists Nintendo 64, NES, SNES, and SEGA Genesis controllers as usable with compatible games on Switch 2. The GameCube controller works with GameCube Classics on Switch 2; Nintendo says it is optional and only compatible with Switch 2.

What should you check before choosing a game?

  • Confirm the exact title. Nintendo Classics libraries are curated, and a system’s presence does not establish that a particular game is included.
  • Check the membership tier. NES, Super NES, and Game Boy are in the standard tier; N64, Genesis, GBA, and Virtual Boy require Expansion Pack; GameCube Classics also require Expansion Pack and Switch 2.
  • Check region and accessories. Virtual Boy has regional limits and an additional accessory requirement.
  • Check separate releases individually. Availability and Switch 2 compatibility for eShop games and packaged collections depend on the title.
  • Do not assume future additions have a date. Nintendo says there is no set schedule for new releases, though each collection will continue to grow.

Does Nintendo sell Nintendo Classics games separately?

Nintendo’s FAQ says there are no plans to make the games available outside the Nintendo Switch Online service, referring to games in the Nintendo Classics service. It also says there are currently no plans to bring classic games together under a general Virtual Console banner. Those statements do not rule out separate releases of classic titles or packaged collections; Nintendo identifies eShop releases and packaged collections as other ways older games may appear on newer platforms.
