Elden Ring and Skyrim are also worth considering, but the right pick depends on what you want from the setting, story, exploration, and combat—not on a universal ranking.
What kind of fantasy RPG are you looking for?
Start with the experience you want, rather than treating these games as interchangeable. Hogwarts Legacy is explicitly an open-world action RPG in the Wizarding World. Its official description places it in the 1800s and highlights Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest, and surrounding areas, alongside learning spells, brewing potions, growing plants, and caring for magical beasts. See the official Hogwarts Legacy game page.

Choose Hogwarts Legacy for the Wizarding World
If your main draw is spending time in recognizable places from the Harry Potter setting and inhabiting a wizarding-school fantasy, this is the clearest fit. The official FAQ describes it as a single-player game, so do not choose it expecting co-op or multiplayer. Check the official FAQ.

If a story-driven fantasy RPG is your priority, put The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt near the top of your list. GamesRadar’s 2026 open-world RPG roundup characterizes it as story-driven and praises its side quests; that is editorial judgment, not an objective measure of quality. Its publisher promotes a remastered version with visual, performance, and gameplay enhancements. Qualifying owners can upgrade for free, but eligibility depends on platform and edition. Check the publisher’s The Witcher 3 page for current upgrade information.

Consider Elden Ring or Skyrim when their particular appeal matters to you
Elden Ring and Skyrim often come up in the same decision, but the available comparisons here do not support a detailed feature-by-feature verdict. Before choosing either, pin down what you want from combat and exploration, and check that game’s platform and edition details. Mentions in individual discussions show that players use these games as comparison points; they do not establish consensus or prove which game is better.
Compare the games by your priorities
| Game | A sensible starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | Pick it when the Wizarding World, its school-and-wizard fantasy, and exploring Hogwarts-area locations are the main draw. | The official site lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm the exact storefront, console generation, edition, and regional listing. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Consider it when you want a story-driven fantasy RPG. | Compare platform and edition options; check whether you qualify for the publisher’s free upgrade to the remastered version. |
| Elden Ring | Consider it if it is already on your shortlist, but decide based on the combat and exploration experience you want. | Platform and edition details; no feature-by-feature recommendation is established here. |
| Skyrim | Consider it if it is already on your shortlist, but first identify the play style you want. | Platform and edition details; no feature-by-feature recommendation is established here. |
Individual players have asked, “The Witcher 3, Skyrim or Elden Ring as my first RPG?” and “Those that have played other RPGs like Skyrim or Elden Ring, how does Hogwarts compare?” Those questions capture a real decision some readers face, but they are anecdotes—not a survey or a measure of player consensus.

Check platform and edition before you buy
Availability can vary by region and edition, so confirm the live storefront listing for the version you plan to play. The official Hogwarts Legacy page currently lists PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2; that platform list does not establish that every edition is available on every system. For The Witcher 3, check the publisher’s page against your current platform and edition before assuming a free remastered-version upgrade applies.
