You can play games without buying a new console by streaming them to a compatible TV, computer, phone, tablet, or other device you already own. The right option depends on whether you want a subscription catalog, access to games you already own, or a way to play on your TV. Cloud gaming still requires compatible hardware, a reliable internet connection, and, for most services, a paid plan.
Choose the kind of game access you want
Cloud gaming runs a game on a remote server and streams the picture and sound to your device. It can spare you the cost of a console, but it is not the same as installing and running a game locally: device support, internet quality, plan eligibility, and the service’s current catalog all matter.

How can I play games without a console?
Use Xbox Cloud Gaming for a subscription catalog
Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games through the Xbox app on certain devices or through a supported browser. The Xbox compatibility page lists selected Samsung smart TVs and monitors, selected VIDAA TVs, certain Fire TV models, computers, phones, tablets, and other devices. Most games in the Xbox app require an active Game Pass subscription, and available features and play limits depend on plan, region, and platform. Cloud gaming is not included with PC Game Pass.

Xbox recommends at least 10 Mbps for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for consoles, PCs, and tablets, and suggests 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are provider recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play: Xbox says performance also depends on connection quality, location, device, and other factors. Check Xbox Cloud Gaming for current plan and service details and Xbox device compatibility for supported hardware.
Use GeForce NOW to stream games you own
GeForce NOW is a bring-your-own-game option. You must own or purchase a supported game through a supported store; a membership does not automatically give you ownership of paid games. Hundreds of free-to-play titles are also supported. NVIDIA’s 2026 FAQ lists over 4,500 supported games, but that figure does not mean every title is available to every member in every region or under every plan. A free membership is available, alongside paid tiers with different features.

NVIDIA’s system requirements recommend 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, 35 Mbps for QHD or ultrawide QHD at 120 FPS, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS. NVIDIA also recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and requires latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. These are service requirements, not independent performance measurements. TV play requires a supported gamepad, and Fire TV support is limited to specified models and software versions. Use PlayStation Plus Premium for eligible PlayStation games
PlayStation Plus Premium is the PlayStation cloud-streaming tier. Sony’s US catalog page describes streaming eligible games on PS4, PS5, and PC, subject to the title and region. PlayStation Plus Extra includes a downloadable catalog but not cloud streaming, so it is not a substitute if you specifically want to stream games without a console.

Sony states a 5 Mbps minimum connection for cloud streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those thresholds do not establish that a connection will be stable or responsive enough for a particular game. Check Sony’s PlayStation Plus game catalog for eligible titles and supported ways to play, and its cloud streaming support page for plan and connection details.
Try Amazon Luna, including the Prime selection
Amazon Luna streams games to supported devices, including Fire TV, computers, mobile devices, and selected smart TVs. Amazon says Prime members can access a selection of more than 60 games at no additional cost, as of its page updated September 21, 2026. That is the selection Amazon stated at that time, not a permanent catalog guarantee. Amazon also reported service availability in 14 countries; that does not establish availability for every reader, and catalogs differ by region.

Check Amazon’s Luna page for the current country list, device support, and catalog. Amazon describes Luna as a cloud gaming service for playing on devices you already own, but only compatible devices and supported games will work.

GeForce NOW is the clearest fit among these options if you want to stream PC games you already own. First confirm the title is supported, then check that the store account holding the game is supported and that the game is eligible in your region and membership tier. You may need to sign in to that store account when launching the game. Free-to-play titles are also available, but paid games are not granted simply by joining the service.

For Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Luna, start with each service’s current eligible catalog rather than assuming that an existing purchase will transfer. Streaming access depends on the title, platform, region, and service rules; ownership on one platform does not by itself establish access through another service.
Can I play Xbox games on my TV without an Xbox?
Yes, if your TV or connected streaming device is on Xbox’s supported-device list, the Xbox app is available for it, and you meet the game and subscription requirements. Xbox names selected Samsung smart TVs and monitors, selected VIDAA TVs, and specific Fire TV models. A TV that looks similar to a supported model may not qualify, so confirm its exact model and software version on the Xbox compatibility list.
You will also need a compatible controller. Xbox says its app works with Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, and more, but compatibility is not universal across every device and service. Check the controller support for your exact setup before buying one. If your TV does not support the app, a compatible Fire TV device may be an alternative only if that model is listed by Xbox; NVIDIA also supports only specified Fire TV models for its service.

Check your connection and setup before paying
Service-published speed figures are useful minimums or recommendations, but they are not a promise of good gameplay. A speed test does not show whether your Wi-Fi is stable, whether latency to a service’s data center is low, or whether other household traffic will interfere.
- Confirm that your exact TV, streaming device, computer, phone, or tablet is supported by the service.
- Look up the specific game in the current catalog or supported-game list, including regional eligibility.
- Check the plan requirement and whether cloud play or the desired features are included; plan names, limits, and benefits can change.
- Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where available, and compare your connection with the provider’s published requirements.
- Verify controller compatibility for the device and service before purchasing an accessory.
If you are unsure whether your connection will feel responsive, start with a free membership or games already included in a plan you have rather than buying hardware or committing to a longer subscription. None of the published speed thresholds guarantees the same image quality or latency in every home.
