For most PC players who want Halo: Combat Evolved’s original campaign, the easiest official choice is Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). It includes a toggle between Anniversary’s remastered presentation and graphics from the original campaign. If you want a more extensively rebuilt version, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate PC remake released July 28, 2026, with updated visuals, revised controls and additional content.
Which Halo: Combat Evolved version should you play?
| What matters most | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Playing the familiar campaign with original graphics available | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC | Switch between Anniversary remastered graphics and graphics from the original campaign. It is still the Anniversary edition, not the original standalone 2001 PC release. Steam’s Anniversary listing |
| A modern remake with expanded campaign content | Halo: Campaign Evolved | A distinct 2026 remake with updated visuals and cinematics, refined controls, new weapons and content, and online co-op for up to four players. Its minimum PC requirements are substantially higher. Steam’s Campaign Evolved listing |
| An older or lower-spec Windows PC | MCC’s Combat Evolved Anniversary | Its published minimum requirements are much lower than Campaign Evolved’s; minimum specs do not guarantee smooth performance. Check the requirements against your particular PC. |
| Online campaign co-op | Either, depending on the version you want | MCC supports online play but has no PC split-screen, and its campaign does not support cross-play. Campaign Evolved lists up to four-player online co-op and crossplay. |
| Lowest-cost access | Compare MCC purchase and Game Pass availability | Halo Support says MCC is available for direct purchase or through some Game Pass plans. Catalog availability and terms can vary by region and change over time; check your storefront and plan. Halo Support’s MCC guide |
What MCC’s Anniversary version includes
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the straightforward official PC route for the original campaign. Its Steam listing describes 10 campaign missions and a switch between remastered graphics and graphics from the original campaign. The toggle changes the presentation; it does not turn the game into the original standalone PC release. Steam’s Anniversary listing

The PC version lists customizable mouse-and-keyboard support, ultrawide support, field-of-view customization, and support for up to 4K UHD and 60+ FPS, subject to hardware capability. The same listing describes over 19 multiplayer maps. Those features make MCC the more flexible fit if you want to tune the presentation or play on an older system, rather than a guarantee that every setup will reach a particular resolution or frame rate.
How to start the campaign in MCC
- Install and launch Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Windows. MCC is available through direct purchase and some Game Pass plans; availability depends on the plan and region.
- From MCC’s menu, choose Campaigns, then select Halo: CE Anniversary. Halo Support recommends this route for players following the series’ release order. Halo Support’s MCC guide
- Choose a difficulty. Halo Support recommends Easy or Normal for new players, but you can select another difficulty if you prefer.
On Steam, Anniversary requires the MCC base game; it is not a standalone substitute for MCC. The store states: “This content requires the base game Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam in order to play.” Steam’s Anniversary listing

Check your PC against the published minimums
These are published minimum requirements, not performance guarantees. If your PC is near the minimum, actual results may depend on the rest of the system and settings. Halo Support says there are no officially recommended MCC drivers and advises using the recommended Halo Infinite drivers or newer versions. Halo Support’s MCC PC specifications

How Campaign Evolved differs from Anniversary
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate remake, not a graphics update or mode inside MCC. Released for PC on July 28, 2026, its listing describes rebuilt visuals and cinematics, refined controls, new weapons and other campaign content, and solo play or online co-op for up to four players. It also advertises crossplay and cross-progression across console and PC. The listing says an Xbox Network account is required and can be linked to Steam. Steam’s Campaign Evolved listing
Choose it if the newer remake’s changes are what you want and your PC meets its more demanding requirements. Choose Anniversary if you specifically want the established MCC version and its original-graphics toggle, or if the lower published minimums better match your PC.

MCC: online play, but no PC split-screen campaign
Halo Support says MCC PC players can play with friends over Xbox network, but the PC version does not offer split-screen. It also says Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot use cross-play. Do not assume cross-play available in other MCC modes also applies to the campaign. Halo Support’s MCC guide
Campaign Evolved: up to four online players
The Steam listing advertises online co-op for up to four players, crossplay and cross-progression across PC and console. One useful Steam launch fix for Campaign Evolved
Halo Support documents an issue that can happen when Campaign Evolved is launched by running its executable directly from the installation folder: it may fail to connect to Steam, perform poorly or freeze. If you encounter one of these problems, use the documented workaround:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Steam app.
- Go to your Steam Library.
- Launch Halo: Campaign Evolved from the library rather than opening the executable from its installation folder.
This is a possible issue and workaround, not an indication that every player will encounter the problem. Halo Support’s Campaign Evolved troubleshooting guidance
Best Value
- Features seven of the most popular multiplayer maps in Halo history
- Co-op play over Xbox LIVE
- New achievements, new challenges, and a new story to uncover
What about playing Halo CE in a browser?
A browser rendition of the original Xbox game is not an official or dependable alternative to the two PC releases. In an October 1, 2026 report, PC Gamer described an experimental project associated with developer Mitchell Hynes and based on decompilation work. The report says sessions use room links rather than matchmaking and raises possible legal concerns; it does not establish a legal determination. For an official PC release, use MCC Anniversary or Campaign Evolved. PC Gamer’s report
