The Happy Ghast is most useful as a shared flying mount, a mobile platform for building in the sky, and a way to tow a chest boat beneath you. Raise one from a dried ghast block, equip it with a harness, then mount it; the first rider steers, and the harness can carry up to four players.
What can you do with a Happy Ghast in Minecraft?
Its main uses are aerial travel, carrying a group, and providing a place to stand while building above ground. With the updated leashing mechanics, it can also tow a chest boat underneath it. These are different setups: use passengers for group travel, a rider standing on it for construction, or a leash for the boat.

Minecraft documents these mechanics in the Java Edition 1.21.6 notes and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90 notes. The Happy Ghast arrived in the Chase the Skies game drop for both editions, as Mojang announced on June 17, 2025.
How do you ride a Happy Ghast?
- Equip it with a harness. A grown Happy Ghast needs a harness before it can be ridden.
- Mount it. The first player to get on controls the mount. Other players can ride along, up to four passengers total.
- Use it for the trip or task. Passengers can travel together, while a player can stand on the mob to work at height.
The official notes establish its passenger capacity and control arrangement, but do not publish a comparison of its speed or efficiency against other mounts. Choose it for shared aerial access rather than assuming it is the fastest or safest option.

How do you get a Happy Ghast?
You raise one through two stages: a dried ghast block becomes a ghastling, then the ghastling matures into a Happy Ghast. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.21.6 notes describe the process and the approximate timings below.
- Get a dried ghast block. It can be found in Nether Fossil structures, crafted with one soul sand and eight ghast tears, or obtained through piglin bartering.
- Place and waterlog it continuously. After about 20 minutes in a continuously waterlogged state, the block spawns a ghastling.
- Grow the ghastling. It follows nearby players. Feed or tempt it with snowballs to speed its growth; without that boost, it takes about 20 minutes to mature.
- Harness the adult. Once it is a Happy Ghast, equip a harness to ride it.
The two 20-minute figures describe separate stages, not a guaranteed total timer: the first requires continuous waterlogging, and the second can be shortened with snowballs.

Can you build on a Happy Ghast?
Yes. You can use it as a mobile platform or vantage point while placing blocks at height. Minecraft’s Java release notes illustrate a player standing on a Happy Ghast and placing blocks beneath a balcony. It can help you reach a work position, but you still place each block yourself; it is not an automatic builder or a universal replacement for scaffolding.
Can a Happy Ghast carry a boat?
A Happy Ghast can tow a chest boat beneath it using a leash. Mojang’s Chase the Skies announcement shows this setup, while the Java notes clarify that the Happy Ghast cannot enter boats. Think of the boat as leashed cargo, not as a vehicle the ghast rides in.

Which Happy Ghast setup should you choose?
- For a group outing: Harness it and bring passengers; this makes use of its four-player capacity.
- For construction above ground: Use it as a place to stand and a way to reach a high work position. Plan to place blocks manually.
- For a chest boat: Use a leash to tow the boat beneath it. This requires a boat and leash in addition to the Happy Ghast setup.
The available official descriptions establish these use cases and mechanics, but do not rank them by travel speed, safety, or resource efficiency. The feature is documented for Java Edition 1.21.6 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.90; Mojang’s June 17, 2025 launch announcement says Chase the Skies was playable in both editions.
