What a WordPress cache plugin actually does
WordPress normally builds a page by running PHP code, querying the database and assembling a theme and plugin output for every request. A cache plugin can save the finished HTML and serve that copy to later visitors, avoiding much of that work. This is usually called full-page caching.
Most performance plugins can also influence other layers:
- Browser cache: tells a visitor’s browser how long static files such as images, CSS and JavaScript may be reused.
- Object cache: stores repeated database results in memory or another persistent store. LiteSpeed Cache explicitly includes object-cache capability; WP Super Cache does not include a built-in object cache.

3. Separate recurring cost from technical cost
Free software is not automatically cheaper if a misconfiguration causes broken scripts, stale pages or support time. Conversely, paying for a plugin does not create a measured speed guarantee. Use a paid plugin when its setup simplicity or support workflow is worth the subscription, and use a free plugin when you can test and maintain the configuration yourself.
WP Rocket: the easiest paid route

W3 Total Cache: maximum control, maximum responsibility
W3 Total Cache is free, with Pro reported at about $99 per year in 2026 roundups. The plugin is described as the most configurable of the leading choices and the hardest to set up. That combination is valuable for administrators who understand their hosting stack, but it creates more opportunities for conflicting settings.
Active-install figures need a qualification

Safe installation procedure for any cache plugin
