These are different jobs, not four versions of the same product. A firewall that blocks suspicious requests, a scanner that finds malicious files, a hardening assistant that changes WordPress settings and a virtual patching service that shields a known vulnerable component each address a different failure mode.

A local plugin runs inside your WordPress installation. It can inspect requests, enforce login rules and scan files or database content from the application environment. Cloud web application firewall
A cloud WAF sits in front of the origin server. Treat that as a reported limitation, not a universal guarantee: the exact delay can change with the vendor’s release policy, and you should verify the current documentation before relying on a specific number.

Wordfence Premium is listed at $149 per year for each site on the vendor’s 2026 product page snapshot. Each site requires its own licence key. The vendor says the price increased from $119 to $149 per year effective December 5, 2024.

Those are service tiers, not merely faster signature delivery, so compare them with the cost of your own recovery process.

When Wordfence is the right fit
- You manage one or a few conventional WordPress sites and want firewall, scanning and login controls in one interface.
- You can tolerate delayed free-tier rules or have a budget for per-site Premium licences.
- You want an upgrade path to an incident-response service without changing the core plugin.
It is less suitable as your only control when the host is already overloaded, when you need filtering before traffic reaches the origin, or when an agency needs vulnerability intelligence across a large portfolio.
Sucuri: cloud filtering and post-incident help
What makes it different
Sucuri is generally selected for its cloud security platform, particularly when a site receives substantial traffic or needs help cleaning an existing compromise. The cloud WAF filters requests outside the WordPress process. That architecture can protect the origin from some malicious traffic before PHP and WordPress have to handle it.

When Sucuri is the right fit
- Your priority is filtering at the edge rather than adding more work to the origin server.
- You operate a high-traffic site where downtime or resource exhaustion is expensive.
- You want a provider whose offering emphasizes malware cleanup and post-incident assistance.
For a small site that only needs two-factor authentication and basic scanning, the annual platform cost may be difficult to justify compared with a local plugin.
Solid Security: guided hardening without a cloud WAF
What it does well
Solid Security (from SolidWP) emphasizes guided configuration. Its setup flow is designed to walk a non-technical administrator through hardening choices instead of requiring a long list of manual settings. Review summaries characterize its protection as server-side and explicitly note the absence of a cloud WAF.
That distinction matters. Solid Security can improve the security posture of WordPress running on your host, but it does not provide the same pre-origin filtering as a cloud service. Keep host-level controls, backups and a recovery procedure in place even after completing its recommendations.
Solid Security Pro pricing
SolidWP lists Solid Security Pro at $99 per year for one site, with higher tiers based on site count. The published package includes a firewall with virtual patching supplied by Patchstack. SolidWP’s own comparison describes its $99 offer as uniquely feature-rich against Wordfence Premium at $149; that is a vendor marketing claim, not an independent test or industry finding.
Documentation also indicates that the product may be becoming “Kadence Security,” but that rename was not independently verified in the available material. Check the current product name, migration instructions and licence terms before purchasing or changing an existing installation.
When Solid Security is the right fit
- You want an opinionated, guided hardening process rather than a large collection of separate settings.
- Your site can rely on server-side controls and does not require an edge WAF.
- You value the included virtual-patching capability and a lower listed single-site price than Wordfence Premium.

Virtual patching in practice
Patchstack tracks disclosed vulnerabilities in WordPress plugins and themes and can apply virtual protections while you remediate the underlying component. This is especially useful when a developer needs time to test an update, when a plugin author has not yet released a fix, or when an agency must coordinate changes across many client sites.

Do not select Patchstack expecting a replacement for a broad malware scanner. Its central job is vulnerability intelligence and exploit blocking, not a general examination of every file and database record for compromise.
Developer and enterprise pricing
The Patchstack Developer plan is listed at $79 per month for 25 sites on monthly billing, or $69 per month when billed annually. Additional sites are listed at $12.50 per month for each group of five. Enterprise pricing is custom and includes unlimited websites.
Free-tier information is inconsistent. Documentation describes a Personal (Free) plan with three site slots and protection priced at $5 per month per site, while a Community-plan announcement says up to 10 websites can be added without charge. Confirm the current pricing page and the exact protection included before treating either limit as current.
When Patchstack is the right fit
- You maintain multiple sites and need a central view of plugin and theme vulnerabilities.
- You develop or support WordPress products and need virtual protection while fixes are tested.
- You already have, or plan to add, separate malware scanning, backups and login security.

The prices are not directly interchangeable. Wordfence and Solid Security quote a single-site annual licence, Patchstack quotes a monthly portfolio allowance, and Sucuri separates annual platform plans from monthly firewall plans. Taxes, currency, promotional discounts and renewal terms can change the amount you actually pay.

Choose by the failure you are trying to prevent
- Need an all-in-one baseline on one site? Start with Wordfence. Install the free tier, enable two-factor authentication and decide whether delayed free updates justify Premium.
- Need traffic filtered before it reaches the host? Evaluate Sucuri’s cloud WAF and confirm that the plan you select includes the firewall, not just a connector or monitoring feature.
- Need a guided checklist of safer settings? Use Solid Security if server-side controls meet your needs and a cloud WAF is not a requirement.
- Need to manage vulnerable components across many sites? Use Patchstack for vulnerability visibility and virtual patching, while retaining scanning and backup tools for other threats.
- Already hacked? Prioritize isolation, clean backups and a qualified cleanup service. A prevention plugin installed after compromise is not proof that malicious code has been removed.
Consider hosting and site count
A local firewall and scanner run on the same hosting account as WordPress. On a low-resource plan, scanning schedules and firewall processing can compete with normal traffic. A cloud WAF moves filtering away from the origin but adds DNS, proxy and plan configuration. For agencies, a per-site annual licence can become more expensive than a monthly plan with a defined site allowance; calculate the total for every production, staging and client site you intend to cover.

If a site can be restored from a tested backup with little business impact, prevention and routine monitoring may be enough. If an outage affects sales, memberships or a public service, budget for professional response, a tested restore and communication procedures rather than relying on a plugin’s dashboard alone.

Installation and hardening checklist
Whichever plugin you choose, use this order to avoid locking yourself out or mistaking an alert for a complete security program.
- Make a verified backup. Save both the database and files, and confirm that the backup can be restored before changing login or firewall settings.
- Update WordPress, themes and plugins. Remove components you no longer need. Virtual patching is a temporary shield, not a substitute for installing the vendor’s fix.
- Install one primary firewall. Running several overlapping firewalls can create false positives, duplicate scans and confusing logs. If you combine products, define which one owns blocking and which one only monitors.
- Protect administrator accounts. Enable two-factor authentication, use unique passwords and remove dormant accounts. Test a second administrator or recovery route before enforcing a policy site-wide.
- Configure alerts and scan schedules. Send critical notifications to an address someone actually monitors. Schedule heavy scans for off-peak hours on limited hosting.
- Review blocked requests and findings. Verify whether an alert is a vulnerable component, a false positive or evidence of compromise. Do not mass-delete files without a known-good backup and a restoration plan.
- Test the site after enforcement. Check public pages, checkout or forms, REST or XML-RPC integrations you intentionally use, scheduled jobs and administrator login from a separate browser.
- Document recovery. Record plugin licences, hosting access, DNS or WAF settings, backup locations and the person responsible for incident decisions.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Assuming “free” means current protection
Wordfence’s free tier includes substantial controls, but the reported delay for premium firewall rules and signatures means that “free” and “fastest updates” are not identical. If your threat model requires the quickest rule distribution, compare Premium with the cost of downtime.
Calling virtual patching a malware scan
Patchstack can block exploitation of known vulnerabilities. It does not establish that an attacker has not already modified a PHP file or database record. Add a scanner, file-integrity review and tested backups when those capabilities are required.
Expecting a local plugin to be a cloud firewall
Wordfence and Solid Security primarily operate on the server. If the origin is overwhelmed by malicious traffic, a cloud WAF such as Sucuri’s paid platform addresses a different part of the problem.
Buying from an old price page
Wordfence’s Premium list price changed from $119 to $149 in December 2024. Sucuri’s pages show both standard annual figures and lower promotional figures. Patchstack’s monthly and annual-billing rates differ. Capture the current checkout price, renewal amount, site allowance and cancellation terms before purchase.
Changing security settings without a recovery path
Lockout policies, IP allowlists and aggressive blocking can disable legitimate administrators or integrations. Keep a tested backup, a hosting-level recovery route and a second administrator before enforcing restrictive rules.
What to verify before paying
- Is the price per site, per account, per month or per year?
- Does the quoted amount apply only to the first term, or also to renewal?
- Are firewall, scanning, virtual patching, cleanup and support included in the same plan?
- How quickly do free and paid tiers receive new rules or signatures?
- How many production, staging and client sites are covered?
- Does the product run locally, through a DNS or reverse-proxy setup, or both?
- What happens if you are already compromised?
- Can you export settings and restore access if the plugin causes a lockout?
