Best World War Z Horde Classes and Weapon Builds After Waves of Lead

There is no officially ranked best World War Z build. For Horde Mode, Hellraiser and Exterminator are strong community-recommended starting points for clearing swarms, while Fixer is a useful support option when your squad needs one. Choose weapons and perks around the team’s gaps, then use the preparation wave to switch classes if the plan needs to change. This guide reflects the Waves of Lead update released October 5, 2026; its class and weapon suggestions are role-based, not claims of tested or universal superiority.

Which class should you use for Horde Mode?

Pick for the job your squad needs rather than treating one class as the winner. World War Z: Aftermath has eight classes, each with its own perks and play style, and weapons have their own progression and upgrades. The official game listing describes those systems but does not rank classes or builds. A recent player discussion favors Hellraiser and Exterminator for horde clearing and Fixer for support; that is community opinion, not a measured comparison or an official tier list.

Build starting point Intended job Best fit when Trade-off to consider
Hellraiser Area damage and crowd clearing Your team needs help thinning large groups Explosive use and equipment availability matter; don’t spend resources without considering what the next wave may require.
Exterminator Horde clearing You want another crowd-focused option or the squad needs a different class mix Its value depends on your perk choices, weapon access, and how well the rest of the team covers specials and support.
Fixer Team support Your group benefits more from support than another dedicated crowd clearer Choose it to complement the squad, not on the assumption that it will lead damage.

The table describes practical roles, not official class specifications or comparative performance findings. The game’s class descriptions and progression details are on the official Steam listing; the recommendations above reflect a community discussion from August 13, 2026.

How to build around your squad

Before locking into a role, check what the team already covers. A second crowd clearer may help if ordinary swarms are overwhelming your position; support can be more valuable if the squad already has sufficient area damage. Also weigh ammunition and equipment economy, special-enemy coverage, range, and where you can safely hold ground. No official source provides comparative damage or weapon testing to settle those trade-offs for every team and difficulty.

  • For swarm pressure: Consider Hellraiser or Exterminator as a crowd-clearing starting point. Preserve equipment and ammunition for the situations where your team needs them most.
  • For team utility: Consider Fixer when the squad needs support. Coordinate so the build fills a gap instead of duplicating a role already covered.
  • For a mixed threat: Make sure the squad can handle special enemies as well as ordinary groups. A build that is useful against a crowd is not automatically the best answer at every range or against every threat.
  • For uncertain waves: Favor a flexible setup and reassess during preparation rather than assuming one class or weapon will remain optimal throughout the run.

When and how to change class in Horde Mode

Saber’s July 11, 2024 Battle of Arizona update announcement says players can change class once during each Horde preparation wave. That gives the team a limited chance to react to its needs before the next wave, rather than a reason to switch repeatedly during combat.

  1. During the preparation wave, identify the gap: crowd clearing, support, or a role better suited to the threats and positions your team expects.
  2. Choose the class that fills that gap, keeping the one-change-per-preparation-wave limit in mind.
  3. Coordinate your choice with the squad so two players do not make the same switch when another role is missing.

What changed in Waves of Lead?

Saber Interactive’s October 5, 2026 patch notes introduce the tier-three Bullpup Shotgun BSG-12 and the Gas Pipe Wrench heavy melee weapon, each with unique perks. The update also adds heavy-weapon perks: Last Exhaust for Chainsaw, Pillbox for Machinegun, Cluster Bombs for MGL, Dragon Breath Shells for Heavy Assault Shotgun, Two-layer Bullet for Payload Rifle, and White Phosphorus for Multi-shot Rocket Launcher. It adds five mutators, including All-in! for Horde Mode.

  • Play as both new and returning characters as you take the fight to the undead with a brutal new melee system, decimating zekes with unique moves, perks and dual Wield weapon options like the sickle and cleaver. Fend off new undead monstrosities.
  • The Next generation of the zombie Swarm: play in glorious 4k|60 FPS. Endure endless waves of increasingly difficult zombies in the new horde mode XL game mode, featuring hundreds more zombies on screen than ever before possible.
  • Deep progression and a new perspective: experience a heart-pounding new perspective with aftermath's immersive new first-person mode option.
  • Level up eight unique classes: the gunslinger, hellraiser, Slasher, medic, fixer, exterminator, dronemaster, and all-new Vanguard class; each with their own perks and play styles.
  • Customize your weapons to survive any challenge, and conquer new daily missions with special modifiers for bonus rewards.

The notes establish that these items and perks were added; they do not publish weapon-versus-weapon performance data or establish a best-in-slot build. Treat the BSG-12 as a new tier-three shotgun option, not an automatic upgrade over every other choice. Compare guns by the job you need them to do: crowd control, useful range, coverage against special enemies, and ammunition economy. Use the same practical checks for heavy weapons, and read the current in-game perk description before committing to a setup.

How to choose a weapon for your role

Match the weapon to the problem your class is solving and the position you can hold. A shotgun may suit close-range crowd control, while a different weapon may better fit a longer sightline or a team that needs broader coverage. Those are selection criteria, not claims that a particular weapon has proven superior: the official October update does not report comparative results.

  • Battle swarms of hundreds of zombies - the Swarm Engine seamlessly renders hordes of zombies in incredible firefights. Advanced gore systems offer gruesomely satisfying action.
  • Coop story-driven campaigns - survive around the world, as unique groups tell their stories of perseverance.
  • Fight other players for survival - several intense Player vs Player vs Zombies game modes complement the coop campaigns.
  • Grow stronger - unlock powerful weapon upgrades and level 6 character classes to take on greater challenges.
  • Against dense ordinary swarms: Prioritize the weapon’s crowd-control usefulness and whether its ammunition supply fits the expected pace of the wave.
  • Against mixed threats: Consider whether you can respond to special enemies without leaving your team exposed or relying on another player to cover every gap.
  • When holding distance: Account for range and positioning; a close-range choice may not suit every firing lane.
  • When considering a new perk: Check its description in the game. The June 18, 2026 update added seven weapon perks—Triple Shot, Home Stretch, Dance Till The End, (Un)natural Magnetism, Bullets Cashback, To Your Health, and Delayed Explosion—and changed Horde Mode store and scoreboard UI. Older setup advice may not account for those changes.

Check Horde Mode availability on your platform

Standard Horde Mode and Horde Mode XL do not have identical platform support. Saber’s official Aftermath FAQ is the appropriate place to check current availability and edition details before buying or planning a session, particularly for Horde Mode XL. Physical and digital copies are available, but listings and edition contents can vary by platform and retailer.

Build checklist

  • Choose a role based on what the squad lacks, not on an assumed universal class ranking.
  • For crowd-clearing candidates, compare Hellraiser and Exterminator against the team’s equipment and ammunition needs.
  • Consider Fixer when support will help more than adding another crowd-focused role.
  • Choose weapons by threat coverage, range, positioning, and ammunition economy; the BSG-12 is an added option, not a proven best weapon.
  • Read perk descriptions in game, especially if following advice written before the June and October 2026 updates.
  • Use the preparation-wave class change deliberately, and verify platform support for the mode you intend to play.
