Beth Deck is a community-built, 3D-printed handheld PC that repackages Framework laptop hardware into a portable gaming machine. Designed by Beth Le, it combines a Framework 13-inch laptop mainboard and battery with an approximately 8-inch touchscreen, speakers, and a rehoused Bluetooth controller.

It is not an official Framework or Valve product, and it is not a finished retail handheld. Think of it as a reusable enclosure design and build recipe for makers—especially Framework owners with hardware to spare.

What is the Beth Deck?

The name combines Beth Le’s first name with the familiar “Steam Deck” format. The project takes computer hardware designed for a laptop and reorganizes it into a handheld enclosure with an integrated display and physical controls.

The enclosure is 3D printed, while the computing core remains a Framework laptop mainboard. That distinction matters: unlike a commercial handheld with one fixed specification, every Beth Deck’s performance depends on the Framework board, operating system, cooling arrangement, and other parts chosen by its builder.

The original project was covered by Hackaday on November 3, 2024. The project files and revision information should be obtained from the current Beth Deck Printables listing, rather than from an old STL mirror.

Hardware: what goes inside

  • Framework 13-inch laptop mainboard: The exact processor, graphics capability, RAM, and storage are not fixed by the enclosure project.
  • Framework laptop battery: Compatibility must be checked against the selected board and the current case revision.
  • Approximately 8-inch touchscreen: The panel, dimensions, interface, and any driver or adapter hardware need to match the design files.
  • Rehoused Bluetooth controller: The available project coverage does not establish one definitive retail controller model.
  • Speakers and cabling: These complete the portable computer’s basic audio and input systems.
  • Custom printed shell: The case provides the mounting points and physical arrangement for the electronics.

The enclosure also relies on carefully positioned interfaces, including pogo-pin connections. That makes dimensional accuracy more important than it would be for a purely cosmetic case. A board can work perfectly on a desk and still fail to fit a poorly printed shell.

How difficult is the build?

The project’s appeal is its solderless design. Hackaday reported an approximately 15-minute assembly claim, but that figure should not be read as the total time needed to create a working gaming handheld. It describes the mechanical and electronics assembly under favorable conditions—not sourcing parts, printing the case, correcting fit problems, installing an operating system, or configuring games.

A realistic build has several separate phases:

  1. Confirm compatibility: Check the current Printables revision against the Framework board, battery, display, and controller you intend to use.
  2. Print the enclosure: Depending on the printer, settings, and part orientation, the shell may take many hours rather than minutes.
  3. Post-process and test-fit: Remove supports, inspect mating surfaces, and verify that mounts and pogo-pin interfaces align before installing expensive hardware.
  4. Install the electronics: Fit the mainboard, battery, screen, speakers, and controller according to the current project instructions.
  5. Set up the software: Install and configure an operating system, check the touchscreen, and map the controls for the games and launcher you plan to use.
  6. Troubleshoot: Display, charging, controller, cooling, and suspend/resume problems can take longer to solve than the nominal assembly.

The available coverage does not provide a complete, independently verified step-by-step manual, so screw sizes, cable routing, firmware procedures, and button-mapping instructions should come from the current project files and documentation.

Which material should you print it from?

Beth Le reportedly recommended PC or PETG for the enclosure. The coverage warns that PLA may be too brittle and that ABS can warp enough to cause problems around the tight pogo-pin tolerances.

That is a project-specific recommendation, not a universal strength or thermal rating. PETG is accessible to many hobbyists but can string and vary dimensionally. Polycarbonate can be mechanically capable but generally demands a printer with an appropriate hotend, heated bed, and controlled environment. Whatever material you choose, printer calibration, shrinkage, warping, support removal, and the exact model revision all affect the result.

If a part does not fit, do not force the board or contacts into place. Recheck the revision, inspect for warping or elephant’s foot, and use a test print or carefully adjust the affected part only after confirming that the problem is not a compatibility mismatch.

  • A compatible Framework mainboard.
  • A compatible Framework battery.
  • The current Beth Deck case files and assembly information.
  • An approximately 8-inch touchscreen and any required controller or adapter hardware.
  • A compatible Bluetooth controller or donor controller.
  • Speakers, cables, connectors, and fasteners.
  • Suitable filament and a printer large and accurate enough for the enclosure parts—or a print service.
  • Operating-system installation media and a plan for controller, display, power, and launcher configuration.

For outsourced printing, services such as Hubs and Xometry may be options, although a one-off enclosure can become expensive once material, shipping, and post-processing are included. Filament suppliers such as Prusa Research and Polymaker offer relevant material categories, but the correct choice still depends on the current files and your printer.

Is it really a gaming handheld?

Yes, in the broad sense: it is a portable computer with a built-in screen and physical controls intended to run PC games. But “gaming handheld” does not mean it provides the same experience as a Steam Deck.

The exact Framework board determines much of the performance. The available project coverage does not establish a universal CPU, GPU, frame rate, battery-life figure, weight, fan-noise level, display latency, or thermal result. Cooling holes are visible in the rear-panel design, but that is not the same as validated sustained gaming temperatures or fan behavior.

Software also matters. A Framework board can run a desktop operating system, but the finished experience depends on controller mapping, touchscreen support, screen scaling, power management, suspend/resume behavior, and the chosen game launcher. No single operating-system configuration should be assumed from the enclosure alone.

The reused controller is another major variable. Its ergonomics, stick placement, grip shape, input mode, and access to buttons may differ from a purpose-designed handheld. The available sources also do not identify Steam Deck-style trackpads or establish equivalent rear buttons.

Beth Deck versus Steam Deck

Criterion Beth Deck Steam Deck
Availability DIY project; files and parts must be sourced separately Commercial product
Hardware Framework laptop mainboard; configuration varies Fixed Valve handheld platform by model
Assembly Requires printing, fitting, sourcing, and troubleshooting Ready to use
Controls Rehoused controller integrated into a custom enclosure Purpose-designed integrated controls
Software Depends on the builder’s operating system and configuration SteamOS or another OS with Valve’s handheld integration
Customization High, including the enclosure and underlying Framework hardware More limited
Cost Highly variable; all-new parts may weaken the value proposition More predictable for the selected retail model
Support Project and community dependent Commercial documentation and support

This is a comparison of approaches, not a claim that one device wins every category. Beth Deck offers a more unusual and customizable project. Steam Deck offers a known platform, integrated controls, predictable setup, and a gaming-focused software experience.

How much does a Beth Deck cost?

The sources do not establish a complete, current total price, so a single number would be misleading. Your cost falls into one of two broad scenarios:

Reuse build

If you already own a compatible Framework mainboard and battery—perhaps from an upgrade or retired laptop—the project can turn otherwise unused hardware into something new. You still need to account for the display, controller, speakers, filament, cables, fasteners, and possible printing or shipping costs.

New-parts build

If you buy a Framework mainboard and nearly every other component specifically for the Beth Deck, the economics become much harder to justify. Reader discussion around the original Hackaday coverage raised the possibility that a new-board build could approach or exceed the cost of a conventional handheld; those comments are opinions, not a verified bill of materials.

Framework hardware and replacement parts can be reviewed through the Framework Marketplace, but prices vary by generation, geography, tax, stock, and date. The project should therefore be treated as a maker build first, not as a cheap shortcut to buying a handheld.

Upgradeability has limits

Framework’s modular hardware is a strong reason to find the project interesting. A replaceable mainboard can be more useful than a sealed, fixed computer, particularly for owners who already have compatible parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

However, a future Framework board is not guaranteed to be a drop-in upgrade. The enclosure depends on board dimensions, port positions, battery geometry, display placement, cooling requirements, and the specific Beth Deck revision. A new board may require updated case files or physical modifications.

Who should build it?

Beth Deck makes the most sense for:

  • Framework owners with a compatible spare or upgraded mainboard.
  • Makers who enjoy 3D printing, fit testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Readers who value repairability and experimentation over a polished appliance.
  • People comfortable configuring a desktop PC for handheld controls.

It is a poor fit for:

  • Anyone seeking plug-and-play gaming.
  • Buyers without access to a suitable printer or print service.
  • Readers expecting guaranteed Steam Deck-equivalent performance, battery life, ergonomics, or software integration.
  • Anyone buying all-new parts without first comparing the complete cost with a commercial handheld.

Check the project status before printing

The design was still being refined when the original coverage appeared. A rev. 1.5 Printables listing is identified in the project’s later community discussion, but the listing itself is the authority on its current files, revision notes, compatibility, and comments.

Before committing filament or ordering hardware, check:

  • The current revision number.
  • Supported Framework board and battery generations.
  • The exact display and controller requirements.
  • Assembly documentation and included parts.
  • Recent comments reporting fit, charging, display, or controller issues.

That last check is especially important because an old article can accurately describe the project while still pointing readers toward files that have since changed.
