Steam is available for macOS, and installing it is straightforward: download the official client, open its .dmg installer, drag Steam into Applications, then sign in. The important limitation is that installing Steam does not make every Steam game playable on a Mac. Check each game’s store page for macOS support before downloading it.
Before you install Steam
First check which Mac you have and whether it has enough space for the games you want to play.

- Check macOS: Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac, or open System Settings → General → About on newer versions of macOS.
- Check the processor: “Intel” identifies an Intel Mac. “Apple M1,” “M2,” “M3,” “M4,” or a later Apple chip identifies an Apple-silicon Mac.
- Check storage: Steam itself uses far less space than most modern games, which may require tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Use each game’s listed requirement rather than a generic “Steam” storage figure.
- Prepare internet access: You need an internet connection to download Steam, install updates, and download games.
Game requirements are separate from Steam’s client requirements. A Mac that can open Steam may still be unable to run a particular game because of its macOS version, processor, graphics technology, 32-bit code, anti-cheat system, or launcher.

Choose the macOS download from that page. Avoid third-party download sites, file-sharing links, modified clients, cracked installers, and search advertisements that imitate Steam. The safest approach is to type the official address yourself or use the link above.
Install Steam on your Mac
- Open the installer. The downloaded file normally appears in Downloads as a
.dmgdisk image. Double-click it to mount it. - Copy Steam to Applications. In the installer window, drag the Steam icon to the Applications folder or its shortcut.
- Launch the installed copy. Open Applications and double-click Steam. You can later launch it from Spotlight, Launchpad, or the Dock.
- Allow updates to finish. Steam may download a client update and related components on its first launch. Wait until the main window is fully available.
Do not routinely run Steam directly from the mounted .dmg. Copying it to Applications gives it a permanent, conventional installation location and avoids confusion when the disk image is ejected.
If macOS blocks Steam
Try opening Steam once normally. If macOS continues to block it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and look for an option to allow the blocked application. Use this only for the copy downloaded from Steam’s official website. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally or run arbitrary Terminal commands to bypass macOS security.
If Rosetta is requested
On an Apple-silicon Mac, macOS may ask to install Rosetta when an Intel-based application or component is opened. Connect to the internet, click Install in the prompt, enter an administrator password if requested, and relaunch Steam or the game.
Apple explains that Rosetta translates Intel applications so they can run on Apple-silicon Macs: Apple’s Rosetta guidance. Rosetta is not a Windows compatibility layer and does not make Windows-only Steam games work.
Sign in or create a Steam account
Sign in with an existing Steam account, or follow Steam’s account-creation flow to make one. Prompts can vary, but you may be asked to verify your identity through email, Steam Guard, or another security step.
- Use an email address you can access for recovery and security notices.
- Choose a unique password.
- Enable Steam Guard when available.
- If you use the official Steam mobile app for authentication, install it through Apple’s App Store.
- Never share Steam Guard codes or approve an unexpected sign-in.
Configure Steam after installation
Open Steam → Settings and review the available options. Steam periodically redesigns its client, so labels and exact locations may differ slightly between builds.

The Downloads settings include controls for download behavior, automatic updates, download throttling, and—where available—download region selection. If a download becomes stuck, Steam also provides a way to clear its download cache; clearing it can require you to sign in again.
If your internal drive is small, add another library location through Steam’s storage settings. An external SSD is generally a better choice for modern games than a slow mechanical drive, but confirm that the drive has reliable macOS read/write compatibility. Keep it connected and mounted whenever you use games installed there, and do not disconnect it while Steam or a game is running.
Controllers
Steam offers controller features for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo controllers, but support still depends on the controller, macOS, connection method, input mode, and individual game. Connect the controller before launching the game, test USB and Bluetooth if both are available, and check the game’s controller settings. Steam Input may help where the game supports it; conflicting controller utilities can cause problems.

Install a Mac-compatible game
- Open Steam and select Store.
- Search for the game.
- Check the platform icons and system requirements on its store page.
- Confirm that macOS is listed. A Windows icon alone is not Mac support.
- Buy the game if necessary, or choose Play Game for a free title.
- Open Library, select the game, and click Install.
- Choose a library location and review the required storage space.
- Start the download and launch the game after installation completes.
Steam’s platform documentation explains that developers publish platform-specific builds and depots: Steamworks platform documentation. A Steam purchase may include versions for multiple operating systems only when the publisher supplies those versions. Steam does not automatically convert a Windows game into a native Mac game.

Use the game’s current Steam store page as the starting point, then compare its macOS requirements with your Mac. Check all of the following:
- Operating system: Your macOS version must meet the listed minimum.
- Processor: The game may support Intel, Apple silicon, or both.
- Architecture: The Mac build may be Apple-silicon-native, Universal, or Intel-only.
- Graphics: Required graphics APIs and GPU features can exclude otherwise powerful Macs.
- Memory and storage: Compare the game’s requirements with available resources, not merely Steam’s size.
- Anti-cheat and launchers: Third-party components may not support macOS even when the game page appears to list a Mac version.
On Apple silicon, Finder can identify an application as Application (Intel), Application (Universal), or Application (Apple silicon). Select the app in Finder, choose File → Get Info, and inspect its type. Native Apple-silicon and Universal builds are generally the best long-term choices, while Intel Mac builds rely on Rosetta when compatible.
Important macOS compatibility limits
32-bit Mac games
macOS Catalina 10.15 ended support for 32-bit applications. A 32-bit-only Mac game therefore will not run on Catalina or newer macOS releases, even if it remains visible in your Steam library. Reinstalling Steam cannot fix an incompatible 32-bit game.
See Apple’s explanation of the transition to 64-bit technology at support.apple.com and Valve’s Mac compatibility guidance at Steam Support. An old title may still be playable through an older supported macOS installation, Windows, or Linux, depending on the game.

Intel Macs
Intel Macs do not need Rosetta to run compatible Intel Mac games, but they still must meet the game’s processor, graphics, storage, and macOS requirements. Some newer games target Apple silicon or newer macOS releases. A game that worked on an older Intel Mac can also stop working after a macOS upgrade if it depended on 32-bit components.
Apple silicon and Rosetta’s future
Rosetta can help Apple-silicon Macs run Intel Mac software, but it cannot solve unsupported graphics APIs, anti-cheat systems, old launchers, Intel-only plug-ins, 32-bit code, or game-specific bugs. Apple currently says Rosetta remains available through macOS 27 and that macOS 28 will limit it to certain older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel-based frameworks. That is a future-compatibility warning, not a claim that every Intel game will stop working at once.

Steam will not open
- Quit Steam completely.
- Move the Steam copy to Trash.
- Download a fresh installer from the official Steam download page.
- Copy it into Applications rather than running it from the disk image.
- Restart the Mac and open Steam again.
- Install Rosetta if macOS requests it, and check Privacy & Security for a blocked-app notice.
Do not replace system files, download random DLLs, or run unverified Terminal scripts.
“Steam is damaged and can’t be opened”
Delete the installer and Steam copy, then download a new copy directly from Steam and install it in Applications. The cause may be a corrupt or incomplete disk image, quarantine or security restrictions, or an unofficial installer. Use macOS’s Privacy & Security controls for a legitimate download rather than using xattr -cr as a default fix.
There is no Install button
The title may not have a macOS version, may have been delisted, or may be a demo, soundtrack, tool, or other non-game item. It may also use a legacy branch or configuration. Check the store page’s platform listing and developer information. Do not force-install Windows files through Steam’s ordinary macOS client.

A game launches and immediately quits
Check the minimum macOS version, Intel versus Apple-silicon support, Rosetta, graphics requirements, anti-cheat, third-party launchers, controller or overlay conflicts, and whether the game is 32-bit. You can verify the game’s files from its Steam properties and consult the developer’s Mac-specific support information, but file verification cannot repair an inherently incompatible binary.
A download is stuck or slow
Pause and resume it, restart Steam, check your connection and free storage, and confirm that an external library drive is mounted. If Steam offers the option, try another download region. Clear the download cache only after noting that you may need to sign in again. Also check whether another application is using the connection.
Ways to play Windows-only Steam games on a Mac
These options are alternatives to running a native Mac build; they do not change the compatibility of the Steam client or the game.

- Compatibility layers: CrossOver and other Wine-based tools run some Windows games, but results vary with the game, graphics technology, anti-cheat, and macOS release.
- Virtual machines: A virtual machine can run some Windows software and lighter games, but graphics performance varies and Windows may require its own license.
- Boot Camp: This applies to supported Intel Macs, not Apple-silicon Macs.
- Cloud gaming: A supported cloud service runs the game remotely and streams it to your Mac, subject to its catalog, subscription terms, and your internet connection.
