For a combat-focused Bard in Baldur’s Gate 3, College of Swords is the strongest general-purpose starting recommendation. Its Blade Flourishes, medium armour, and level-6 Extra Attack support weapon damage while preserving Bard spells and skills. Choose College of Lore instead for extra skills and control, or College of Valour for ally support and broad martial options. The best feats depend on which role you want the character to fill.

Which Bard subclass is best in BG3?

There is no single best college for every party or play style. Swords is the clearest default for a Bard who wants to fight with weapons; Lore suits a skill-focused controller; Valour emphasizes supporting allies while retaining martial capability. College of Glamour is also available in the game, but the available feature detail here is not enough to rank it fairly against the other three.

College Best fit What it brings
College of Swords Personal weapon offense and defense Medium armour, Blade Flourishes, a choice of Dueling or Two-Weapon Fighting, and Extra Attack at Bard level 6.
College of Lore Skills, debuffs, and spell flexibility Three additional skill proficiencies, Cutting Words, and two additional Magical Secrets spells at Bard level 6.
College of Valour Ally support and martial breadth Medium armour, shields, martial weapons, Combat Inspiration, and Extra Attack at Bard level 6.
College of Glamour Players interested in the Patch 8 college Available in BG3; a detailed feature comparison is not established here, so no relative ranking is offered.

College of Swords: best combat-focused default

Swords Bards gain medium armour proficiency and Blade Flourishes at level 3. Defensive Flourish adds 4 Armour Class when the attack hits; Slashing Flourish can attack up to two enemies; Mobile Flourish can push a target and let the Bard teleport to it. At level 6, the college gains Extra Attack. Choose Dueling for a one-weapon approach or Two-Weapon Fighting for dual wielding. These details describe BG3’s implementation, not tabletop assumptions. BG3 Wiki: College of Swords; BG3 Wiki: Bard; BG3 Wiki: Class Changes.

For a straightforward first run, Swords works well as a single-class build: it develops weapon capability without giving up Bard’s spellcasting and skill coverage. Multiclassing is optional, not a prerequisite for a strong Bard.

College of Lore: best for skills and control

Lore adds proficiency in three skills and grants Cutting Words, which spends Bardic Inspiration to penalize an enemy’s attack rolls, ability checks, or damage. At level 6, Lore learns two non-Bard spells from the Magical Secrets list. In BG3, Cutting Words can also reduce an enemy saving throw, which can help a control spell land; unlike the tabletop expectation, it cannot reduce a damage roll in this implementation. BG3 Wiki: College of Lore; BG3 Wiki: Class Changes.

College of Valour: best for ally support

Valour grants medium armour, shields, and martial weapon proficiency. Combat Inspiration can improve an ally’s attack roll, ability check, saving throw, weapon damage, or Armour Class. The college gains Extra Attack at level 6. It is a good fit when strengthening allies and using a broad range of weapons matter more than Swords’ Flourishes or Lore’s extra skills and level-6 Magical Secrets. BG3 Wiki: College of Valour.

What abilities should a Bard prioritize?

Charisma is the Bard’s spellcasting ability, so it is the main priority when spells, control effects, and dialogue checks matter most. Dexterity supports initiative and Armour Class and is particularly useful for weapon-oriented builds. Constitution contributes to hit points and concentration checks. These are role-based priorities, not a tested ranking of ability scores for every build. BG3 Wiki: Bard.

  • Spell or dialogue-focused: Prioritize Charisma.
  • Weapon-focused Swords Bard: Give Dexterity more weight alongside Charisma.
  • Concentration and durability: Do not neglect Constitution.

What feats should a Bard take?

Bards receive feats at class levels 4, 8, and 12. Pick each one to address the build’s most important need rather than following a universal list: improve the main ability score, support the chosen weapon approach, or solve a specific weakness such as acting too late in combat. BG3 Wiki: Bard.

Level 4

For a spell, control, or dialogue Bard, consider increasing Charisma if the increase reaches a useful even-number breakpoint. A weapon-focused Swords Bard can instead improve Dexterity or choose a combat feat suited to the weapon setup. One published Paladin/Swords example takes +2 Dexterity or Savage Attacker here; that is an example for that multiclass, not a rule for every Bard. PC Gamer’s Bard build guide.

Level 8

Reassess the character’s role. A control Bard may still benefit most from improving spellcasting, while a weapon build can continue its damage plan. If the character needs to act earlier, initiative support may address that specific problem. PC Gamer’s Paladin/Swords example chooses Alert at Bard level 8; treat it as an option, not a universal best feat. PC Gamer’s Bard build guide.

Level 12

Use the final feat to finish the main ability-score plan or address a concrete weakness in the build. There is no established universal level-12 Bard feat winner.

How to level a straightforward Swords Bard

  1. Levels 1–2: Take Bard levels continuously. Keep Charisma high; invest in Dexterity for a weapon-oriented plan and maintain enough Constitution for concentration and durability.
  2. Level 3: Choose College of Swords and select Dueling or Two-Weapon Fighting to match the weapon setup.
  3. Level 4: Choose a feat based on the build’s role and ability scores.
  4. Level 5: Bard gains Improved Bardic Inspiration and Font of Inspiration.
  5. Level 6: Swords gains Extra Attack, making this a key milestone for weapon combat.
  6. Levels 7–8: Continue Bard and choose the level-8 feat to reinforce the role or fix a specific weakness.
  7. Level 10: Bard gains Magical Secrets.
  8. Level 12: Take the last Bard feat and complete the single-class progression.

The level progression and feature timings are based on the BG3 Bard and Swords class references. BG3 Wiki: Bard; BG3 Wiki: College of Swords.

When is multiclassing worth considering?

Multiclass options can be powerful, but their leveling costs and assumptions matter. PC Gamer describes a Paladin 2/Swords Bard 10 route that uses Dexterity, Divine Smite, late-game equipment, and a respec-based progression. It delays Bard features compared with staying single-class, so it is a specialized plan rather than a required upgrade for a first playthrough. Players who want the simplest progression—or who do not want to depend on a respec plan—can remain a single-class Bard. PC Gamer’s Bard build guide.

Which Bard rules differ from tabletop 5e?

BG3 changes several Bard mechanics, so use the in-game rules rather than importing tabletop assumptions. The cited BG3 rules reference lists Bardic Inspiration charges scaling with Bard class level: three at level 1, a fourth at level 5, and a fifth at level 8. Song of Rest gives the party one additional short rest per long rest. Lore’s Cutting Words can reduce an enemy saving throw but not a damage roll, while Swords Flourishes have their own BG3-specific behavior. BG3 Wiki: Class Changes.

In particular, BG3’s Defensive Flourish adds a fixed 4 AC when it hits, Slashing Flourish makes separate attacks against two targets, and Flourish uses are not limited to once per turn. Those are in-game mechanics, not assumptions to carry over from tabletop play. BG3 Wiki: Class Changes.
