The Candela and Arlo paths were a choice in Pokémon GO’s February 2025 Beloved Buddies Timed Research. That event has ended, so neither path is available now. At the time, Arlo’s route offered a Rocket Radar and encounters with Shadow Diglett and Scizor; Candela’s offered two Poffins and encounters including Rapidash. The better fit depended on the rewards you wanted and whether you could complete Candela’s friend-and-trade tasks.
What was the Candela or Arlo choice?
In the Beloved Buddies event, the first stage of Timed Research was shared. At Stage 2, players chose either “Investigate Arlo” or “Team Up With Candela,” and the remaining tasks and rewards differed by path. The task and reward details below were reported in a guide published during the event; they are historical, not a current event listing. The Escapist’s Beloved Buddies guide was last updated February 20, 2025.
What did each path require and reward?
Investigate Arlo
- Stage 2 tasks: Catch 15 Pokémon, transfer 5 Pokémon, and defeat 3 Team GO Rocket Grunts.
- Stage 2 rewards: 500 Stardust, a Cubone encounter, and a Rocket Radar; subsequent completion rewards included 2,000 XP and a Shadow Diglett encounter.
- Stage 3 tasks: Catch 25 Pokémon, transfer 15 Pokémon, and defeat Team GO Rocket Leader Arlo.
- Stage 3 rewards: 10 Ultra Balls, 500 Stardust, and a Slowpoke encounter; subsequent completion rewards included 3,000 XP, 2,000 Stardust, and a Scizor encounter.
- Overall completion: The guide also lists 2,500 Stardust for completing the research.
Team Up With Candela
- Stage 2 tasks: Earn 10 hearts with your Buddy, earn a Candy by exploring with your Buddy, and make a new friend.
- Stage 2 rewards: 500 Stardust, a Luvdisc encounter, and two Poffins; subsequent completion rewards included a Dunsparce encounter and 2,000 XP.
- Stage 3 tasks: Play with your Buddy five times, send three Gifts, and trade a Pokémon.
- Stage 3 rewards: 10 Ultra Balls, 500 Stardust, and a Shellder encounter; subsequent completion rewards included 3,000 XP, 2,000 Stardust, and a Rapidash encounter.
- Overall completion: The guide also lists 2,500 Stardust for completing the research.
Which path was the better choice?
Choose based on the rewards and tasks that mattered to you at the time—not on a universal ranking. The Escapist judged Arlo’s rewards better overall, but that is the guide author’s assessment rather than a measured comparison.
- Arlo suited players seeking a Rocket Radar and the reported Shadow Diglett and Scizor encounters, and who preferred catching, transferring, and battling Rocket opponents.
- Candela suited players seeking two Poffins and the listed Candela-path encounters, and who were comfortable completing Buddy activities and social tasks.
Candela’s route specifically called for making a new friend and trading a Pokémon. Those steps could be inconvenient if you had no available friend or trading partner; that is a practical consequence of the listed requirements, not a claim about every player’s situation.

Can you still choose or change paths?
No. Beloved Buddies was a February 2025 event, and its Timed Research opportunity has expired. Pokémon GO’s Help Center says Timed Research disappears after its stated period and that a multiple-path choice cannot be reversed or updated after selection.
