Bhagat Singh: The Game is a 2002 PC first-person shooter remembered less for its play than for its unusual subject: an Indian anti-colonial story told through a shooter. It is often cited among India’s earliest 3D games, but calling it the country’s uncontested first depends on what “first” means.

What is Bhagat Singh: The Game?

Released in 2002, the game was produced by Lumen Phon Multimedia and Mitashi Edutainment, according to Scroll’s 2017 retrospective. It is a PC first-person shooter in which the player takes the role of Bhagat Singh and fights British colonial forces.

The story begins after the killing of British police officer John Saunders, then takes the player through Lahore and onward to an escape and an attack on the Central Legislative Assembly. Scroll compares its maze-like level layout to Wolfenstein 3D. The game was distributed on CD, but that historical format does not establish whether playable copies are currently available or compatible with modern computers.

Why did the game earn the “borefest” reputation?

Journalist Neeraj Dikshit’s retrospective is sharply critical of the experience. He describes dated character models, sluggish movement, awkward controls that could not be changed, dim and repetitive maps, weak enemy behavior, and missions without checkpoints or clear objectives. Mission endings, he writes, relied on slides or crude video exposition. His verdict: “Bhagat Singh: The Game was born. And it was wonderfully terrible.”

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.

  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

That is Dikshit’s retrospective assessment, not a claim based on a new playthrough here. Its critique points to a game whose historical premise is more compelling than the shooter built around it.

Was it really India’s first 3D game?

It is safer to call Bhagat Singh: The Game one of India’s earliest 3D PC shooters than to state that it was definitively the first Indian 3D game. Scroll calls it India’s first 3D game and first FPS, but other accounts use “first” for different categories.

Title or claim What the cited account says Why the comparison is not definitive
Yoddha: The Warrior A scholarly account identifies it as a possible earlier Indian 3D game. The account also describes Bhagat Singh as another claimant. “Possible earlier” complicates a blanket first-3D-game label, but does not establish a settled national chronology.
Bhagat Singh: The Game Scroll calls it the first 3D game and first FPS in India. A 2009 Ghajini review instead calls it the first full-fledged 3D game made by an Indian gaming studio. The review uses a narrower production-and-scope description. “First FPS,” “first 3D game,” and “first full-fledged studio-made 3D game” are different tests.
Streets of Mumbai An NDTV video describes it as the first three-dimensional game with PC and PlayStation versions. The video frames the claim around those platforms. A platform-specific claim is not necessarily equivalent to a claim about the first Indian 3D game overall.

These descriptions may overlap, but they do not define a single shared category or standard of proof. The available accounts therefore support an important early title and a historically prominent claim—not a conclusive national record.

Why does the game matter beyond its gameplay?

The game’s lasting interest lies in its premise: an early commercial attempt to center an Indian anti-colonial story in a shooter, a genre whose familiar historical settings and antagonists had often been Western. That cultural significance does not require the game to be a good shooter. Its rough execution and distinctive subject can both be true.

It should not, however, be treated as a reliable history lesson. Dikshit notes that the game depicts Singh killing Saunders in revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai. Historical accounts described in the retrospective say Singh and his associates intended to target James Scott but mistakenly killed Saunders; Rajguru fired the first shot. The game’s historical framing diverges from that account.

The cited account establishes that the original was distributed on PC CD, but the available sources do not verify current retail availability, a modern release, or compatibility with current operating systems. A historical mention of a CD release is not evidence that a working copy is easy to obtain or run.
