What kind of game is Big Hops?
Developed and published by Luckshot Games, Big Hops is a 3D platformer and action-adventure. You play as Hop, a young frog drawn into a journey away from home involving the trickster spirit Diss. The adventure spans the Red Desert, Open Ocean and Shattered Mountain, according to Luckshot Games.
The defining idea is movement. Hop uses his tongue to grab onto objects and swing, turning traversal into more than a sequence of ordinary jumps. Luckshot frames the design ambition as a question: “What could 3D platformers be with deeper, freer movement and emergent gameplay?” That aim is reflected in the way the game encourages players to improvise rather than follow only one obvious route.

Hop’s tongue is the central traversal tool: grabbing and swinging can carry him across gaps and through spaces in ways that make route-finding part of the play. GameSpot’s review describes Hop’s moves as “a modest suite” that “string together in ways to make movement feel free-flowing and exuberant.” That captures the appeal reported by reviewers: a relatively focused set of abilities can produce expressive movement when combined. The trade-off is that physics-driven movement may feel less predictable than a tightly scripted platforming system.
What do reviews say about Big Hops?
The overall reception is favorable, though not without reservations. GameSpot rated Big Hops 8/10, praising its movement. Metacritic’s captured listing showed a critic Metascore of 78 from 12 reviews and a user score of 6.8 from 17 ratings. Those are dated snapshots, not fixed totals; scores and review counts can change as more ratings are added.

Is Big Hops worth playing?
It is worth considering if you enjoy platformers where movement itself is the reward and where experimenting with tools can reveal alternate ways through an environment. The tongue-based traversal and plantable vegetables give the game a distinct identity, and reviews suggest its best moments come from combining those ideas freely.
Be more cautious if bugs, camera friction or inconsistent physics quickly interrupt your enjoyment, or if you prefer an adventure with a consistently focused progression. The available reviews support a positive but qualified recommendation rather than a claim that the game is a polished fit for every platformer fan.

Platforms, release date and edition
Luckshot Games names PC/Steam, Nintendo Switch and PS5 as platforms. Nintendo’s U.S. store lists a digital Nintendo Switch edition with a January 12, 2026 release date and a 4.4 GB file size. GameSpot and Metacritic also report January 12, 2026. Luckshot Games’ page instead gives January 12, 2025, so its listed year conflicts with the store and review references; the 2026 date is supported by those other sources. The Nintendo details are specific to the U.S. digital listing.
