bitsigd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a file you should download from a random DLL website. If Windows reports that bitsigd.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first with DISM and SFC, then check Windows Update and antivirus quarantine.
The file belongs to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, or BITS. BITS handles background downloads and uploads used by Windows Update and other Microsoft services. Its IGD support allows BITS to use Internet Gateway Device counters when estimating available bandwidth. Microsoft explains BITS and its network-bandwidth behavior.
What bitsigd.dll does and where it belongs
bitsigd.dll normally belongs in:
%WINDIR%System32bitsigd.dll
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit counterpart may also appear in:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64bitsigd.dll
System32 is not a statement that the file is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, that folder normally contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components.

BITS has been included in Windows since Windows XP and has changed across Windows releases. Do not assume that every Windows version uses the same bitsigd.dll version. Microsoft’s documented BITS version checks primarily concern qmgr.dll, the main BITS component, rather than this support DLL. See Microsoft’s BITS version guidance.
A Windows 10 sample identifies Microsoft as the signer and reports version 7.8.19041.1, but that is a build-specific reference, not a universal version for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, depending on Windows Update and disk speed.
This is the safest first repair because bitsigd.dll is a protected Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, then System File Checker uses that repaired source to restore damaged or missing system files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Save your work.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until the command finishes. Do not close the window even if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and try the program or Windows Update operation again.
Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC sequence for missing or corrupted protected Windows files. Use Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files, restart and test again. If it found no violations but the error remains, check the full path shown in the error and continue with the signature and quarantine checks below.
Repeating SFC alone is unlikely to help if DISM cannot access a healthy component source. In that situation, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run DISM and SFC again.

If you want to avoid manually comparing repair output while running DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path for a protected Microsoft DLL.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates and use the troubleshooter
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected files inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
Microsoft’s current Windows Update troubleshooter can identify update-related problems. The Get Help app also includes a BITS troubleshooter. Microsoft lists its Windows troubleshooters here.
After troubleshooting, run DISM and SFC again if the DLL error continues.
Fix 3: Check whether the file is present and correctly signed
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
Do not judge a DLL by its filename alone. A file named bitsigd.dll in an unexpected folder may be an unrelated replacement.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Look for
bitsigd.dll. - If you have 64-bit Windows, also check
%WINDIR%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
The expected Windows copy is normally under System32, with a possible 32-bit counterpart under SysWOW64. If the only copy is in a game, temporary folder, download directory, or unrelated application folder, do not replace it manually. Remove the unofficial copy if appropriate and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
A valid signature does not make every copy safe in every location, so verify both the path and the signer.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged file or occasionally flag a legitimate Windows component.

- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
bitsigd.dll. - Open the detection details and check the file path.
- Restore it only if the path is the expected Windows directory, the Microsoft signature is valid, and you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can put the device at risk. Review Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf Defender or another security program removes the file again, do not keep copying replacements back into the folder. Update the security software, run a full scan, and repair Windows after resolving the detection.
Fix 5: Use the Windows 11 repair-reinstall option
Time needed: 30 minutes or longer.
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart and test the original error.
This option is useful when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component store or when several Windows components are failing. Microsoft documents the repair-reinstall feature here.
If the option is unavailable, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair using official Windows installation media. Back up important files before major recovery work.
Fix 6: Restore Windows after a recent system change
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.
If the error began after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or software installation, System Restore may reverse the system change.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, registry state, and installed programs without removing personal files. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.

If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair instead.
Fix 7: Update a network driver only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A network driver can affect BITS networking, but updating a driver will not normally restore a missing bitsigd.dll. Use this step when Device Manager shows a network adapter problem, Windows Update reports a driver failure, or the issue began immediately after a driver change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began after an update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
If manually checking multiple hardware drivers is the tedious part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers need attention; its free scan identifies the driver issues, while installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace DISM and SFC for a damaged Windows DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 bitsigd.dll is generally not an appropriate repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs and ActiveX components that expose a COM registration entry such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that bitsigd.dll should be manually registered.
Running the command can produce a misleading error without repairing the missing component. Microsoft explains the proper scope of DLL registration.

Why random DLL downloads usually fail
Downloading a loose copy of bitsigd.dll is risky because it may contain malware, have the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or have an invalid signature. Even a genuine file copied from another computer may not match your Windows build, language, architecture, or component store.

A replacement can also hide the real problem, such as disk corruption, an incomplete update, or antivirus quarantine. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows repair media instead.
What may have caused the error
The most likely causes are:
- corruption or deletion of a protected Windows file;
- an interrupted or failed Windows update;
- antivirus quarantine or a false positive;
- disk or component-store damage;
- a recent driver, utility, or system change;
- an unofficial DLL copied into the wrong directory.
If the error appears only in one Windows profile, test the same action in a new profile. If it appears only with one application and names a DLL inside that application’s own installation folder, use that application’s official Repair, Verify, or Scan files feature. That is different from a missing Windows copy under %WINDIR%.
FAQ
Is bitsigd.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. A file with the same name elsewhere requires separate verification.
Which Windows versions contain bitsigd.dll?
BITS has shipped with Windows since Windows XP and has evolved across releases. The exact presence, architecture, and version of bitsigd.dll depend on the Windows build. There is no single version that applies universally.
Is a BITS networking error the same as a missing DLL error?
No. BITS can report an Internet Gateway Device or network communication problem while the DLL is present and Windows Update still works. A loader message naming bitsigd.dll indicates a file, path, signature, or component-loading problem.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the error returns?
Restart first, then check Defender Protection History and confirm the file’s location and signature. If security software removes it again, resolve that detection. If the file is present and valid, inspect the full error path, the requesting executable, and Event Viewer.
