Start with this quick diagnosis
Before changing files, record three details:
- Which program or game reports the error
- When it appears: during startup, login, boot, cellular connection, or wireless-network authentication
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type
The exact wording also matters:
- “simauth.dll is missing” usually means Windows or an application cannot find the file.
- “simauth.dll was not found” has the same basic implication, but the named program may actually be missing another dependency.
- “Error loading simauth.dll” means the file was found but could not be loaded.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean a dependency of
simauth.dllis missing, not necessarily the DLL itself. - “simauth.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” points more strongly to corruption, an incompatible copy, or a failed update.
Do not start by downloading a replacement DLL. simauth.dll is a Windows EAP-SIM runtime component, so Windows servicing is the safest repair route.
What simauth.dll does
simauth.dll is Microsoft’s EAP-SIM run-time DLL. EAP-SIM is an Extensible Authentication Protocol method that uses SIM-based credentials for network authentication. Windows supports it for scenarios including mobile broadband, cellular connections, Hotspot 2.0 or Passpoint, and some enterprise wireless networks. Microsoft identifies EAP-SIM as EAP method type 18. Microsoft’s EAP overview
The normal 64-bit Windows location is:
C:WindowsSystem32SimAuth.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use Windows’ 32-bit compatibility area rather than the same loading path as 64-bit applications. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit system file, or the other way around.
You may see this error even if you have never knowingly configured SIM authentication. Windows networking services, a modem or cellular driver, a connection manager, or an application that initializes network components can request the EAP provider indirectly. A program can also report a dependency failure using the name of the DLL it was trying to load.

No particular commercial game or application has been verified as a recurring cause of simauth.dll errors. If the message names a specific program, troubleshoot that program as well as Windows.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A missing or mismatched protected Windows component is the most likely cause. Start with the normal servicing path.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Launch the program or repeat the network action that produced the error.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. These tools repair Windows-managed components instead of placing an unverified file in a system folder.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source Windows uses to restore protected files. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run DISM
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Look for a successful completion message.
Run SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected program again.
A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them is a good sign. If the message says no integrity violations were found but the application still fails, continue to the signature, quarantine, and application checks below.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported first-line fixes.
If DISM cannot repair the image
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update is unavailable, use a compatible repair source from matching Windows installation media or another approved Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$Windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture. Do not point DISM at a random download or an unrelated Windows computer.
After DISM completes, run SFC again:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still reports that it could not repair some files:
- Run DISM again and confirm that it completed successfully.
- Run
sfc /scannowa second time. - Review the servicing log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
- If the component store is badly damaged, use a matching installation source or an in-place Windows repair rather than manually replacing
SimAuth.dll.
Fix 3: Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined it
Security software can quarantine a system file after a detection or false positive. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection or restore a file based only on its name.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions for
SimAuth.dllor a related Windows component. - Open the relevant entry and inspect its location and detection details.
- Restore it only if the original path, Microsoft signature, and system-health checks support that decision.
Microsoft explains the Protection History workflow and warns that restoring a quarantined item puts it back on the device. Microsoft Protection History
After restoring a legitimate file, run a scan and then run DISM and SFC again. If Defender repeatedly removes the file, leave protection enabled and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and Microsoft signature
A filename alone does not prove that a DLL is genuine. Check the copy Windows or the application is attempting to load.
Check the path
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
SimAuth.dll. - If you are checking a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, also inspect the Windows 32-bit compatibility directory when appropriate.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
A copy in the normal Windows system directory is consistent with the component’s expected placement. A copy inside a game folder, temporary directory, download folder, or an unfamiliar application directory needs separate investigation.

Check the digital signature
- In the file’s Properties window, open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that it is associated with Microsoft.
- Open the Details tab and record the file description, product information, version, and size.
Public inventories identify the file as EAP SIM run-time dll, associated with Microsoft Windows. Historical inventories show several Windows-era versions, including 64-bit 10.0.14393.0, 64-bit and 32-bit 10.0.10586.494, and older 32-bit versions. These are inventory records, not a universal current-version list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the signature is invalid, the path is unexpected, or the metadata looks inconsistent, do not copy that file into System32. Run Microsoft Defender and use Windows repair tools.
Fix 5: Repair the program that names the error
If the error appears only when one game or application starts, that program may carry a private DLL copy or may be reporting a missing dependency inaccurately.
- Write down the executable name shown in the error.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Download the latest installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Reinstall it, then restart Windows.
For a game installed through a launcher, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command before reinstalling the entire game. If the application has its own repair utility, run that utility as administrator.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will repair simauth.dll. Those packages address their own components and are not an evidence-based standalone fix for this Windows EAP runtime.

Fix 6: Update cellular, modem, or network drivers
Use this step when the failure occurs during mobile broadband, cellular, Hotspot 2.0, or a network connection handled by OEM software.
Update through Windows Update
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if shown.
- Install the relevant network, modem, or mobile-broadband driver.
- Restart Windows.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Also check Modems, Ports, and Other devices if the hardware is listed there.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the computer after installation.
If Windows cannot find a driver, use the official support page for the PC, modem, or cellular adapter manufacturer. Do not use a driver package that does not match the hardware and Windows architecture.

Identifying which of dozens of network and modem drivers is stale can take time, especially after a Windows update. Outbyte Driver Updater can use its free scan to identify driver issues, while installing drivers requires the full version; it is optional, and the hardware maker’s official driver remains the preferred source.
If the error began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart and test again.
Fix 7: Handle 32-bit and 64-bit mismatches correctly
Windows keeps architecture-specific system components for compatibility. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not mean you should download a 32-bit simauth.dll and place it in System32.
Use this approach:
- On 64-bit Windows, allow Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to restore both system architectures.
- On 32-bit Windows, use only repair sources matching that installation.
- Do not replace a file with a version from a different Windows release.
- Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it is being used as part of controlled, matching offline repair.
- If only one older application fails, repair that application before altering Windows files.
A mismatched DLL can create a new loader error, fail because of incompatible dependencies, or interfere with future Windows servicing.
Fix 8: Use System Restore if the problem survives repair
System Restore can return system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. It does not remove personal files.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the
simauth.dllfailure began. - Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
Afterward, test the program or network connection. If the issue began after a failed update and System Restore does not help, an in-place Windows repair or Microsoft recovery option may be appropriate.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
simauth.dll is an EAP provider/runtime component, not a typical COM component that you repair by registering it. Running:

regsvr32 simauth.dll
may produce an entry-point error and does not restore a missing, corrupt, quarantined, or mismatched Windows component. Use Windows servicing instead.
Why downloading simauth.dll is risky
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong Windows version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- An unsigned or incorrectly signed replacement
- A copy that does not match Windows component servicing
Copying it into System32 may also hide the real problem and cause later updates or repairs to fail. Microsoft documents EAP-SIM as a Windows capability, but does not provide a standalone public simauth.dll download package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official application installers, and official hardware-driver sources instead.
If nothing works, collect these details
Before contacting the application developer or Microsoft support, record:
- The complete error text
- The executable or program name
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The path of every
SimAuth.dllcopy found - Digital signature status
- Whether Defender quarantined a file
- Whether the failure occurs at boot, application launch, or network connection
- Recent Windows, driver, or security changes
- The result of DISM and SFC
That information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from an application-local copy, a missing dependency, a driver problem, or a security action.
FAQ
Is simauth.dll a virus?
Not by filename alone. simauth.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, but malware can use the same name. Verify the path, Microsoft digital signature, metadata, and scan results.
Should I put simauth.dll in System32?
No. If the protected file is missing or corrupt, repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Manual replacement is not the normal fix.
Recommended Free Tools
Is simauth.dll required for every Windows PC?
No. EAP-SIM is a specialized authentication method. Many systems will not use it directly, although networking software can still request the component.
Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by simauth.dll, or the named application may be loading a private copy. Check the application repair path, signature, architecture, and recent driver or update changes.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Generally, no. regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLLs, while simauth.dll is an EAP runtime component.
What if the error returns after DISM and SFC?
Check Defender Protection History, repair the named application, update the relevant modem or network driver, and consider System Restore. If the problem continues, provide the executable name, Windows build, full error, file path, signature result, and repair logs to support.
