You may see one of these messages when Windows starts, Windows Update runs, or an older Microsoft program is installed:

The program can't start because bitsprx4.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
Error loading bitsprx4.dll. The specified module could not be found.
bitsprx4.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media.

The phrase “specified module could not be found” can mean that bitsprx4.dll itself is missing, or that another DLL it requires is missing.

The 60-second answer

bitsprx4.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, or BITS, specifically BITS 2.5 Proxy. BITS handles background HTTP and SMB transfers and is used by Windows Update and some older Microsoft software.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, first install pending updates, then run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run DISM before SFC, restart Windows, and test the operation again. If only one older application reports the error, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer instead.

What causes a bitsprx4.dll error

The likely cause depends on when the message appears.

Where the error appears More likely cause Best first action
During Windows startup or Windows Update Damaged or incomplete Windows component Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
While installing older Microsoft software Missing or damaged BITS component Repair Windows servicing or use the correct legacy BITS package
When one older application starts Damaged application files or a private copy Repair or reinstall that application
After antivirus activity Quarantined or altered file Check Windows Security Protection history
After manually copying a DLL Wrong architecture or wrong Windows build Remove the replacement and repair from an official source

BITS 2.5 was documented for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, with separate packages for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003. Modern BITS versions are different, and Microsoft’s current documentation does not establish that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain this exact filename.

That distinction matters. A missing bitsprx4.dll message does not automatically mean that a game needs this file or that every modern Windows computer should have a copy in its system folders.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

An incomplete Windows servicing operation can leave protected files unavailable or damaged.

Windows 11

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not request it.
  6. Try the operation that produced the error again.

If Windows Update itself is failing, open the Get Help app and search for the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its repair steps, restart, and check for updates again.

Windows 10

  1. Select Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates and restart.
  6. Test the affected program or Windows feature.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted protected Windows component.

DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Repeat the action that caused the bitsprx4.dll error.

A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the original error no longer appears, the repair worked.

If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates and restart before trying again. SFC can also be run again after DISM completes successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its full-version repair performs the repair, but it is not required, and official Windows repair remains the correct path for this file.

Windows 7 and Vista

The modern /RestoreHealth workflow is not available in the same form on Windows 7. Use Windows Update and then run SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:

sfc /scannow

Windows Vista and Windows 7 are obsolete, so use original installation media or a supported repair process if SFC cannot restore the component.

Fix 3: Repair the BITS service

BITS is a Windows service, but enabling a service does not recreate a missing DLL. Check its status to distinguish a stopped service from damaged system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Note its Service status and Startup type.
  7. If it is stopped and the controls are available, select Start.
  8. Leave the startup type at its existing Windows-managed setting unless Microsoft troubleshooting specifically directs you to change it.
  9. Select Apply, then OK.
  10. Restart Windows and test again.

If BITS will not start, produces another service error, or is missing from the list, return to DISM and SFC. Do not copy a DLL into the Windows folder as a substitute for repairing the service.

There is no ordinary Windows Features checkbox that reinstalls bitsprx4.dll. Turning unrelated features on and off is unlikely to correct this particular problem.

Fix 4: Use the correct legacy BITS package

This step applies to Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, not ordinary Windows 10 or Windows 11 troubleshooting.

BITS 2.5 was supplied through Microsoft’s KB923845 packages. The correct package depends on the operating system and architecture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows XP x86
  • Windows XP x64
  • Windows Server 2003 x86
  • Windows Server 2003 x64

Use Microsoft’s official KB923845 Update Catalog search and select the package matching the operating system. Historic Microsoft Download Center pages for Windows XP x86, Windows XP x64, and Windows Server 2003 may be retired or unavailable.

Before installing:

  1. Press Win+Pause or open Control Panel > System.
  2. Confirm the Windows edition and system type.
  3. Download only the matching Microsoft package.
  4. Create a restore point if the operating system supports it.
  5. Run the package installer.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Test BITS or the older Microsoft program again.

Do not replace an unavailable package with a DLL taken from an archive. Windows XP and Server 2003 are unsupported and should not be used for normal internet-connected work.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit file paths

On 64-bit Windows:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 contains native 64-bit system files.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.

The names are confusing, but the distinction is important. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit component, while a 64-bit process needs the native version. Copying whichever file appears first in a search result can create an architecture mismatch.

  3. Right-click Windows PowerShell.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32qmgr.dll" |
  Select-Object -ExpandProperty VersionInfo

This checks the BITS manager file, not just the presence of bitsprx4.dll. The result can help identify the BITS generation installed on the computer.

Do not use file size or a filename alone to decide whether a replacement is correct. Windows build, architecture, servicing state, and dependencies all matter.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine

If the error started after malware removal or an antivirus scan, Windows Security may have quarantined a genuine system file, or the original file may have been maliciously altered.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review detections related to the time the error began.
  7. Open a detection to inspect its file path and details.

Do not automatically restore the file. Restore it only when the detection is confirmed to be a false positive and the file is verified as an authentic Windows component. If the problem began immediately after malware removal, run a full scan, and consider an offline scan before restoring anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a file appears in an unexpected application folder rather than a Windows system location, treat it cautiously and repair the application instead of allowing it back.

Fix 7: Repair the application that reports the error

If Windows Update and other Windows functions work normally, but one older program reports bitsprx4.dll, the application may contain a damaged private copy or may depend on an older BITS installation.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Restart the application and test it.
  6. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the program.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or original installation media.

If the error names a specific application directory, do not place a system DLL into that folder. Use the program’s own repair, update, or file-verification feature.

No specific modern game has been verified as requiring bitsprx4.dll. Treat claims that this is a standard game runtime with suspicion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use regsvr32 only for a diagnosed registration problem

bitsprx4.dll is associated with a proxy or stub component, and proxy DLLs can expose COM registration functions. However, registration is not the normal first repair for a missing or corrupt file.

Use regsvr32 only when:

  • the authentic file already exists;
  • diagnostics point to COM registration damage;
  • the file matches the operating system architecture.

For a native 64-bit copy, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "%windir%System32bitsprx4.dll"

For a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, run:

%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "%windir%SysWOW64bitsprx4.dll"

A successful registration message means the DLL accepted the registration request. It does not prove that the file is the right version or that a missing dependency has been repaired.

regsvr32 cannot fix a file that is missing, corrupt, malicious, or the wrong architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Update drivers only for a separate driver problem

A generic driver update is not a direct remedy for bitsprx4.dll. Consider drivers only if Device Manager or Event Viewer shows an independent device or driver failure that began at the same time.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  4. Double-click the affected device.
  5. Read the Device status message.
  6. Select Driver > Update Driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Guessing which of many drivers is stale can take longer than checking each device manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation through its full version is optional, and a driver update should not be treated as the fix for a standalone bitsprx4.dll error.

What to do if SFC cannot repair bitsprx4.dll

If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:

  1. Open the log location:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
  1. Search the log for bitsprx4.dll.
  2. Confirm whether the failure concerns the Windows component or another file.
  3. Install all available Windows updates.
  4. Run DISM again, then run SFC again.
  5. If the problem remains, use matching Windows installation media or an in-place repair installation.

Do not extract a DLL from unrelated installation media. A mismatched build can cause a new Bad Image error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also use System Restore:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs.
  6. Review the changes.
  7. Complete the restore and restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and programs, but it does not remove personal files.

Frequently asked questions

Is bitsprx4.dll a Microsoft file?

It is associated with Microsoft’s Background Intelligent Transfer Service 2.5 Proxy. It is not established as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 file, so its absence on a modern installation is not automatically a problem.

Should I download bitsprx4.dll?

No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or fail because a dependency is missing. Repair Windows or reinstall the affected application from an official source instead.

Are Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET the fix?

There is no established evidence that those redistributables specifically repair bitsprx4.dll. Install one only when another named DLL or the affected application’s documentation identifies it as a dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix the error?

Only in a narrow COM registration case where the authentic, correctly matched file already exists. It does not repair a missing or damaged DLL.

What if only one older program reports the error?

Use that program’s Repair option, update it, or reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. A private application copy can be damaged even when Windows itself is healthy.

What if every repair fails?

Use System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or reinstall the affected legacy operating system. For XP and Server 2003, plan a move to a supported Windows version rather than continuing to patch an internet-connected system.
