idrvdll.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, this usually means an Intel firmware utility cannot find one of its own files, not that Windows has lost a normal system DLL.

The safest repair is to identify the program that displayed the error and restore its complete, matching package.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before changing anything:

  • The error appeared during a BIOS, Intel Management Engine, chipset, or motherboard update: reinstall the exact update package from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  • The updater folder was moved, partially deleted, or extracted incorrectly: extract a fresh copy to a short local folder and keep all companion files together.
  • Windows Defender or another antivirus program quarantined the file: inspect quarantine, verify the package source, and replace the entire package if its provenance is uncertain.
  • The package is for another computer, motherboard revision, or Intel firmware generation: stop using it and obtain the correct OEM package.
  • The error appeared after installing a random DLL or copying files to System32: remove that workaround and restore the official application package.
  • Several unrelated Windows components are also failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC after protecting your work.
  • The firmware updater still fails or the computer will not boot normally: stop experimenting and use the manufacturer’s BIOS recovery or service procedure.

What idrvdll.dll is

idrvdll.dll is an Intel utility component associated with the Windows version of Intel’s Flash Programming Tool, commonly launched as fptw.exe. Intel System Tools packages list it with files such as fparts.txt and pmxdll.dll, and the tool works with Intel Management Engine firmware regions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DLL includes functions associated with installing and removing a temporary driver. That does not make it a normal Windows device driver or a general-purpose runtime library. It is a user-mode component used by a firmware utility.

There is no verified reason to expect Microsoft Windows, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET to install this file. No verified evidence places it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Why it appears in a BIOS folder

Many OEM BIOS packages include several Intel utilities behind the manufacturer’s updater. The visible launcher may call fptw.exe, which then expects idrvdll.dll, pmxdll.dll, configuration files, and driver support files beside it.

If one file is missing, the launcher may show a generic “DLL missing” message even though the real problem is an incomplete firmware package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact OEM firmware package

This is the primary fix.

  1. Cancel the firmware updater. Do not continue a BIOS or Management Engine update while required files are missing.
  2. Write down the exact computer model, motherboard model, and revision if one is listed.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s official support site in your browser.
  4. Search for that exact model, not just the processor family or motherboard chipset.
  5. Open the BIOS, firmware, Management Engine, or system tools download section.
  6. Download the package intended for your model and current firmware generation.
  7. Right-click the downloaded archive or installer and choose Properties. If Windows shows an Unblock checkbox, select it and click Apply.
  8. Extract the package to a short local path such as C:OEMUpdate. Do not run it directly from an archive, email attachment, network share, or deeply nested temporary folder.
  9. Confirm that the extracted folder contains the supplied launcher and its companion files. If it contains fptw.exe, keep idrvdll.dll, pmxdll.dll, fparts.txt, and other supplied files in the same directory.
  10. Right-click the manufacturer’s launcher and choose Run as administrator.
  11. Follow the vendor’s update instructions. Keep the computer connected to reliable power and do not interrupt the process.

A successful repair normally means the updater opens without the DLL message and proceeds to its hardware or firmware checks. The presence of the file alone is not proof that the package is correct.

Do not copy idrvdll.dll from another computer or another Intel tool release. A file can have the right name and still belong to the wrong firmware generation.

Fix 2: Check the package architecture

Some Intel tool packages contain a 32-bit idrvdll.dll. Other releases include a separate 64-bit file named idrvdll32e.dll. These names are not interchangeable.

Do not rename idrvdll32e.dll to idrvdll.dll, and do not replace one with the other. The executable and DLL must come from the same complete package.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type under Device specifications.

This tells you whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit, but it does not tell you which Intel firmware package is safe for the machine. The OEM package must still match the computer model, motherboard revision, and firmware generation.

  • Comprehensive cooling: Large VRM heatsinks, M.2 heatsinks, PCH heatsink, hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 4 with AI Cooling II

If the package includes both 32-bit and 64-bit components, use the vendor’s launcher rather than choosing a DLL manually.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Firmware utilities access low-level hardware and may install a temporary driver. Security software can therefore quarantine a component, although a detection result does not by itself prove that every copy is malicious or safe.

Check the security history before restoring anything:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving idrvdll.dll, fptw.exe, or the extracted firmware folder.
  5. Record the detection name and the affected path.
  6. Confirm that the package came from the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  7. If the package is verified and the event is clearly a false positive, follow the security product’s restore or allow procedure.
  8. If the package came from a mirror, an unofficial archive, or an unknown source, do not restore one DLL. Delete it and download a fresh complete package from the OEM.

Do not permanently disable Windows Defender or your security software to make a firmware tool run. If the vendor package is repeatedly blocked, contact the manufacturer before proceeding with a BIOS update.

Fix 4: Restore the original folder structure

Moving only the executable or DLL can create the same error as deleting the file. Intel firmware tools may expect companion files in their working directory.

If the package still exists:

  1. Find the original extracted folder.
  2. Confirm that idrvdll.dll is beside the executable that needs it.
  3. Restore any files moved to the desktop, System32, SysWOW64, or another temporary folder.
  4. Do not launch the executable from a shortcut whose Start in folder points elsewhere.
  5. Right-click the launcher, select Properties, and check the Start in value under the Shortcut tab if available.
  6. Run the launcher from the original extracted folder.

If the folder is incomplete, obtain a fresh package instead of reconstructing it from individual files.

Fix 5: Update the related firmware or chipset package

If the error is connected to a chipset, Management Engine, or motherboard utility rather than a BIOS updater, reinstall the complete package from the OEM support page.

Device Manager can help identify the hardware, but reinstalling a random device driver will not normally restore this DLL:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand System devices.
  3. Look for Intel Management Engine, chipset, or related system-device entries.
  4. Right-click an entry and select Properties.
  5. Use the Driver tab to inspect the provider and installed driver details.
  6. Do not select Uninstall device unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.
  7. Return to the OEM support page and install the matching chipset or Management Engine package.

idrvdll.dll is a user-mode library used by a firmware utility, so Device Manager is usually not the direct repair. The complete OEM package remains the important part.

If you are manually comparing chipset and firmware driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated in its free scan; installing drivers through the full version is optional, and the OEM firmware package is still the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components if other files are failing

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They usually cannot restore idrvdll.dll because it is not a protected Microsoft system file, but they are appropriate when several unrelated Windows features are corrupted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM first:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.

Then run System File Checker:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.

If Windows reports that it repaired files, test the original program again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to the OEM package repair. Repeating SFC will not manufacture a missing Intel utility file.

If you are tired of hunting through repair logs and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues; the free scan identifies problems, while repairs are performed through the full version, and reinstalling the OEM firmware package remains the definitive fix for idrvdll.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the registration entry points required by COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general command for installing every missing DLL.

The documented Intel functions associated with this component indicate a utility-specific driver workflow, not ordinary COM registration. Running this command is therefore not an evidence-based repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 idrvdll.dll

It may produce an entry-point or registration error, and success would not prove that the firmware tool has the correct companion files. Do not register the DLL unless the specific software vendor explicitly instructs you to do so.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites that offer an isolated download of idrvdll.dll. That approach can provide:

  • Malware or a modified binary
  • The wrong Intel tool release
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A file for another Management Engine generation
  • A DLL that loads but leaves the firmware package incomplete

The safe sources are the computer manufacturer’s official support page, the motherboard manufacturer’s official support page, or an official Intel package explicitly intended for the exact platform. Restore the complete signed or vendor-provided package instead of placing one file in System32.

When to stop and contact the manufacturer

Stop the update and obtain manufacturer support if:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The package does not clearly match the model or revision.
  • The updater reports a firmware mismatch.
  • The computer restarted during the update and now behaves abnormally.
  • The updater still cannot load its files after a fresh official extraction.
  • The machine cannot boot normally.
  • You are unsure whether a BIOS recovery image is appropriate.

Use the manufacturer’s documented BIOS recovery, USB recovery, or service procedure. Do not substitute an unrelated FPT build or force a firmware image simply to bypass the DLL error.

FAQ

Is idrvdll.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence shows that Microsoft ships it as a Windows component. It is associated with Intel Flash Programming Tool and related Intel Management Engine utility packages.

Should I put it in System32?

No. The utility normally expects its files in the supplied application directory. Copying it to System32 can hide the real package problem and does not provide the required companion files.

Is idrvdll32e.dll the same file?

No. Some packages use a separate 64-bit component named idrvdll32e.dll, while other packages contain the 32-bit idrvdll.dll. Do not rename or interchange them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore it?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this is a vendor utility component. Use SFC for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall the exact Intel or OEM package.

Can I copy the DLL manually?

Only from the exact verified package and back into its original directory. Do not download an isolated copy or use one from another computer, firmware generation, or Intel tool version.
