Critics also valued the breadth of play beyond combat. Metacritic’s excerpts point to exploration, player-driven content, and a variety of non-combat activities. Steam describes the game as an open-world action MMORPG and lists activities such as fishing, trading, crafting, and cooking alongside combat, world bosses, and guild sieges. What were the main criticisms?
A demanding start
Some reviewers described the beginning as difficult to get through or understand. Meristation’s excerpt says that patience is rewarded with combat, non-combat activities, and exploration; that is an endorsement with a clear condition, not a claim that the early experience suits everyone.
Complex systems and a significant time commitment
The game’s many systems can be hard to absorb. CGMagazine’s excerpt points to crafting complexity and the need to experiment or consult wikis to understand it. Other review excerpts stress patience and the time needed to appreciate the game. Players who prefer a concise progression path or immediately clear crafting and life-skill systems may find that complexity a drawback rather than a source of depth.

Is Black Desert Online good, based on critic reviews?
The critic reception suggests it is a stronger fit for players who enjoy an expansive sandbox, action combat, and several parallel ways to spend time in an MMO. Its breadth is also the source of a key trade-off: learning the systems and finding a preferred activity can demand patience and effort. A 73 “Mixed or Average” score reflects that balance better than a simple yes-or-no verdict.
Keep the date of the reviews in mind when using them to decide whether to play now. Metacritic identifies its PC listing’s initial release date as March 3, 2016; Steam lists May 24, 2017 as its release date. These dates refer to different listings and contexts.
