Yes. In ordinary non-Hardcore play, choose Respawn, then travel back to the place where you died to retrieve any items that remain there. You do not respawn at the death location: you start at your set respawn point or, if none is usable, at world spawn.

How to return to your death location

  1. Choose Respawn. This returns you to your bed, a valid respawn anchor, or world spawn—not to the place you died. Minecraft’s guide to spawning, dying, and respawning explains the mechanic.
  2. Travel back to the death location. Use coordinates if you noted them, or retrace landmarks and your route. If you know the location, this is usually the simplest method.
  3. Collect the dropped items. Your carried items generally remain at the death location, unless they were destroyed or your world’s settings change the default behavior.

How much time do you have?

Minecraft’s official guide says dropped items have five minutes to be retrieved once the chunk containing them is loaded. That is not necessarily a five-minute countdown from the death screen: the timer depends on when the area is loaded. Items may also be destroyed sooner by hazards.

Hazards can make recovery impossible

Lava destroys most dropped items; netherite items are fireproof, according to the official guide. Minecraft’s recovery compass guide also warns that a death in lava can prevent recovery. Other hazards may destroy items as well, so head back promptly.

Finding the location with a recovery compass

If you do not remember where you died, a recovery compass points toward your last death location—but only while you are in the same dimension where that death occurred. It spins if you have not died or if you are in a different dimension, so it is not a general-purpose compass.

You can craft one from a regular compass and echo shards found in ancient city chests. Keep one at home with spare equipment rather than carrying it on an adventure: if you die while holding it, it may be left at the death site with your other items. For navigation using a compass, make sure you are in the correct dimension and follow its direction back to the last death location.

Where you respawn—and what can change it

A bed sets an Overworld respawn point. In the Nether, a charged respawn anchor can set one. If a bed is unusable or the anchor is depleted, you return to world spawn instead. These points determine where you begin after choosing Respawn; they do not bring your dropped items with you.

World settings can affect item drops, and behavior may vary with edition-specific settings, servers, commands, add-ons, or mods. Minecraft’s official guidance is general rather than a version-by-version audit, so check the settings and rules for your particular world if items do not behave as expected.

Hardcore is different

Hardcore death is permanent, so it is not the ordinary respawn-and-retrieve situation described above.
