PC Gamer reviewer Tyler Colp praised the expressive combat, while GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling described the game as a gauntlet of elaborate boss fights. TechRadar reviewer Alicia Haddick highlighted spells that enhance combat. Together, those assessments suggest the strongest case for the game is the immediacy and spectacle of its encounters rather than uniformly compelling exploration.

The boss-focused structure also has a cost. Wakeling found the stretches between major fights less successful, and Haddick described an inconsistent overabundance of bosses. If you enjoy learning an encounter and moving on to the next major challenge, that rhythm may suit you. If you want every stretch of an action RPG to offer equally rewarding exploration or pacing, the reviews identify reasons for caution.
Is the world easy to explore?
Haddick praised the visually superb backdrops and distinctive setting, but also warned that environmental detail can make navigation unclear without a map. That is a notable tradeoff: the places that make the game visually rich may not always make the route forward obvious.

The reviews do not establish a single navigation experience for every player. Still, unclear wayfinding is worth weighing if you prefer games that communicate routes plainly or if getting turned around interrupts your enjoyment. The cited coverage offers no controlled comparison of navigation against other action RPGs.
Does the story make sense without reading Journey to the West?
GameSpot’s Wakeling found parts of the story difficult to follow without familiarity with Journey to the West and Chinese mythology, particularly where the game draws on source-material references. That is his review judgment, not proof that every new reader will be lost.

Reading the novel is not established as a prerequisite. Players can approach the game without that background, but those interested in following its allusions may get more context from knowing the tradition it draws on. The cited reviews do not identify or assess a specific English translation.
What do the reviews say about graphics and PC performance?
Visual presentation was a clear strength in the cited coverage: Haddick praised the backdrops, and Colp highlighted the setting and eccentric cast. Performance is a separate question from visual quality, however. Colp reported stutters, shader-related trouble, and occasional crashes in the PC review build he assessed.

PC Gamer’s review page says the game was reviewed on an RTX 4090, Intel Core i9-12900K, and 16GB RAM; the review was published August 16, 2024. That is evidence about one reviewer’s configuration and build at that time, not a current benchmark or a reliable prediction for every PC. The cited reviews provide no controlled, current comparison across platforms, and they do not establish how later patches or other hardware affect performance.

- A strong fit: players drawn to expressive action, staff combat, spells, boss encounters, and a distinctive mythological setting.
- A more uncertain fit: players who want consistent exploration between fights, very clear wayfinding, or a story that explains every reference without prior context.
- On PC: treat the reported stutters and crashes as a reason to check recent platform-specific information for your hardware, not as proof that the current game will perform the same way.
The cited reviews are three assessments published on August 16, 2024: TechRadar’s PC review, GameSpot’s review, and PC Gamer’s review. Their praise and criticisms help frame the tradeoffs, but they are not firsthand testing for this article or current technical measurements. What about editions and platform availability?
The official PlayStation US page confirms a PS5 listing and its August 20, 2024 release date. That listing does not establish present stock or guarantee a particular physical format. GameSpot’s June 2024 report said physical editions announced at that point would not include a disc, citing the studio’s stated distribution and offline-resource limitations. That dated report should not be used to identify every edition currently offered.
The same GameSpot report quoted Game Science’s position at the time on Xbox: “We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards.” This is a June 2024 statement, not a current confirmation of Xbox availability. Check the platform’s current store listing for the edition you intend to play.
